You know what I just realized? Super Saiyan God for Goku isn’t “earned” in the usual way, but in some ways, he ABSOLUTELY earned it through his actions as a whole in the series. From starting a family with ChiChi to letting Vegeta live after the Saiyans attack, there wouldn’t BE enough Saiyans for the ritual to occur, or, at the very least, there wouldn’t be enough Saiyans who could agree on doing the ritual together to give one Saiyan a major advantage. Through his actions, his kindness, and his attachment to humanity/Earth, he builds a family and community of Saiyans who would perform this action.

I was literally about to comment the same thing! A big theme of this and many Shonen manga is training, but another common theme is the power of friendship/cooperation/relying on others/etc. super saiyan god is explicity a combination of both of those themes. It's a power he can only achieve because he had pure hearted friends who trusted him enough to impart that power to him, but also, because he has trained his body so well, once he gets it once, his lifetime of intense training is what allows him to handle it and keep it. I think that makes it a good metaphor for power in real life. In the real world, the most powerful people are politicians, wealthy business owners, famous people, etc, and those poeple are at the height of their power when they are both A). Competent because they have trained a lot in their area of expertise and B). They've legitimately earned the trust of the people they lead, as opposed to forcing cooperation through violence

There are some people who are very kind and sociable, but not competent, so they can earn peoples trust and cooperation, but onc3e they have it, once they achieve a leadership roll, they don't handle it well, and burn out. Alternatively, there are incredibly competent people with bad social skills who are better than most at their chosen field, but cant for the life of them learn how to play nice with others, so they never gain access to the powers afforded to you when you learn to work with others. If you think about it, villains of shonen are often characters who have one of those qualities, but lack the other, or a heroes arc throughout the story is learning to increase one or the other so that they are in balance.

Honestly what I loved about ultra instinct was the role Roshi played in it, I thought it was a nice callback to his biggest job in the storyline - being Goku's teacher

He emulated Ultra Instinct, and was eliminated by Jiren, which finally got Goku to remember who he is, The Turtle School's Son Goku. As he says this, he awakens to Ultra Instinct.

@@justanautomaton It frustrates me that the manga AND anime adaptations of ToP are both so flawed considering there was so much there for a fantastic story. They built up this tournament two arcs before, brought in all the side(lined) characters, brought back FRIEZA which, if that wasn't cool enough, gave him some interesting character growth, ULTRA INSTINCT (which was also built up) and countless fantastic character moments. I'm not surprised at how good it was, I'm surprised it was only as good as it was.

@@Arbron Super has its own fair share of issues, especially production-wise, but it was at least building off of the ideas Toriyama himself introduced, whether from the recent movies or the Super manga. Whereas GT was just Toei throwing darts at a board and seeing what stuck, and a *lot* of it didn’t stick. Some did, like SSJ4, Baby Vegeta and the idea (not so much the execution) of the Shadow Dragons, but still not much.

I still want to say that the design of Super Saiyan, on it's initial showing, is my favorite where there are less lines, less spikes and it literally looks like floofed, light blonde hair instead of the super gelled, super oiled looking hair we get from then on in the Buu Arc and onward. Even when powered up it doesn't need to be super shined or oiled or shaded like the later hair does. I'm so glad when they went back to that type of look in the Broly Movie. Again, less is more and that, to me, definitely translates in that instance.

Absolutely agreed. Super Saiyan 1 has never looked as beautiful to me as it was during the fight with Frieza on Namek. The lighter pale yellow looks so much more ethereal and legendary than the...mustard yellow spikes it became.

Yeah man those of us that grew up watching gt after z (I was fortunate my cousins saw gt when it aired and were huge fans so lent me their blu rays), GT is the official ending somewhere back in our psyche. We know it isnt official or canon but as a child thats what you saw as the end of the series...When dbgt ended, I cried man, I cried...Its a lot more of an emotional connect with gt and ssj 4 by extension than it being good...

@@silver_carbide The Baby saga had terrific potential, and SSJ4 was an amazing looking transformation. SSJ4 basically looks powerful. You see it and at a glance, you know better than to mess with that. It's something Blue failed in because we never saw what led up to it in the first place, AND it's a recolor of normal Super saiyan. Super saiyan, ignoring the transformations after, looks feels powerful. Blue, despite the lore, looks cheap to me. And GT's ending is, honestly, just fantastic. The sendoff the characters get is genuinely touching. You've seen them grow up from kids into their later years, and Goku's suddenly a kid again going away for 100 years, and he has one final chance to say good bye to his loved ones, as the next time he returns, they'll be gone, and barring his granddaughter, they all are. He's regarded as a both a hero of the earth and a master martial artist just as Mr. Satan was, but no one really notices him. And the fact that he seemingly vanishes instantly from Pan's sight makes you question whether or not he was really there to begin with. GT wasn't well written, but my god, they nailed the ending.

It definitely had an impact on the fandom, whether or not an individual even liked GT. I don't, but I still have those same SS4 hype memories from the dawn of the internet. Hearing the creator of the form fangirl over Toriyama illustrating the form is so wholesome. I needed that. I've always thought it had a cool aesthetic, but hearing those interviews really made me cherish it. I wish GT had lived up to the hype of SS4. I almost let it completely eclipse SS4, despite the weird promethean brows on SS3. xD SS4>SS3

I'd say Goku's Ultra Instinct is a technique adapted INTO a transformation. The angels don't appear to be transformed yet use the skill, but Goku gets shiny, then white hair. You know what I mean.

I think it became a transformation for Goku because of the nature of the power. Autonomous Ultra Instinct is, as implied by Whis and Beerus, an ability meant for Gods. As such, when Goku uses the ability, it causes him to physically change so his body can support the power.

It is worth mentioning that Ultra Instinct as a whole is _tremendously_ difficult to enter and maintain. The mindset required is sometimes near-impossible to keep, and it's why Goku briefly enters UI during Broly, but is unable to maintain it and has to go with Blue instead. On top of that, Mastered UI is a whole other ordeal to use - Goku notes that for the most part, he is unable to use this form at will. Hell, _Beerus_ can use UI and _still_ hasn't mastered it.

The biggest problem with a music list is the copyright issue... The big companies (unlike most individual creators) get access to KZbin's internal content ID software, which can key off as little as 3-5 seconds of a song, and most companies are fairly agressive about filing copyright strikes. Even though a review/critique video is often- though not always!- covered under the Fair Use exemption of the DMCA, that does nothing to prevent a claim; it's a defense in a court of law, which can leave a video (or even an entire channel) floating in limbo if a company really wants to fight about a claim. TL;DR: it's often not worth the hassle to do a song list unless you're willing to do it without using actual audio clips.

The anime is very questionable since the way Rose happens means both statements of it being Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan Blue are technically right. Goku Black throughout the anime is in the mostly forgotten "Saiyan Beyond God" state that Goku and Vegeta achieved in Resurrection F (Where it's a formless state that allows you to reach the power level of Super Saiyan God without God Ki or transforming, it's particularly why Base Goku is able to outmatch Final Form Frieza despite his buff). This is why Black is so powerful and is able to match SSJ2 Goku DESPITE it being clarified that his power is lessened due to a lack of control over Goku's body, his base power was equivalent to a weakened Super Saiyan God. So when Goku Black turns Rose, it's both normal Super Saiyan since that's reasonably all he could transform into up from there but also SSGSS since the requirement for that is turning Super Saiyan while in Saiyan Beyond God.

I think this list was great overall. I’d argue for SSG being earned though. The movie’s main theme was about how he can’t earn it alone through simple training like all other forms. The challenge is Goku has to get out of his comfort zone and do something his pride wouldn’t agree with. All 3 of those movies-Battle of Gods, ROF, and Broly-and even the tournament of power, were about teamwork and how Goku could never hope to succeed without trust and help from others. The SSG ritual fits perfectly with that narrative. Kaiser even said that a downside to a transformation, in the case of SS3, was a positive. Why can’t it be the same for SSG? Sidenote: I love how that whole SS4 rant from Kirran was just a ploy to convince Arc to put one in FighterZ and it worked.

The problem I think, and this is something Naruto does as well, is that it was introduced as something he couldn't achieve alone, which was a good moral (as you described). But then five minutes later, oh, now suddenly he can use its power passively despite it running out? And by next movie now he *can* do it alone? (And for some reason Vegeta can now do it too?) It just feels like an artificial hurdle. If something is introduced as having a weakness, a few chapters/episodes later someone will probably find a way to ignore that weakness. This is okay if the story builds up to it (the Cell arc was *entirely* about this for the SSJ form), but if it suddenly happens 5 minutes later it just feels a bit like you've wasted your time.

I even asked Santa for games to learn about the anime during Christmas time. "What!? There's a Super Saiyan 2? Who's Cell? What's that pink blob thing? Super Saiyan 3?!?!". OG Super saiyan was the hype for me to gain interest in the franchise. Seeing a hero who was bloodied and still moving forward was so inspirational. I'm ashamed to admit I enjoyed the dubbed speech even. Probably to similar shame GT fans feel.

@@armsofzeus So your story's very similar to Kirran! Unluckily I never played the games (I am not into games really) so I never knew forms existed before I saw them get broadcast. This was until ssj4 however...I once bought a sticker book that had dbgt stickers in it before finishing the series. I knew it existed but had never seen it. Not knowing better I thought the ssj 4 Goku and Baby Vegeta's second form must be new villains I hadnt seen yet...A school senior who was 7 years old back then explained it was "Goku GTen" and "Vegeta GTen"! 🤣🤣 I still remember confidently calling it "Goku GTen" in front of my cousins until they explained what it was and lent me their disks...🤣🤣🤣

I would guess no. Unless the components of the Cell needs are different between the two cyborgs, then there is no reason for him to change in a different way. As far as I can tell it is his own form of evolution brought upon by adding new parts that is unaffected by the physical appearances of either cyborg. Of course these are just my own thoughts on the matter.

Wanted to throw in a sidenote for Super Saiyan God. While the story of DragonBall has always been to achieve higher levels of strength and power through hard work and struggle, there are different kinds of struggles. In the ToP finale, we see Jiren make note of Universe 7’s strength: the power of trust. I think this form is earned, because it makes a significant act of Goku within the series: he has to trust his friends and family to give him this form. Unlike a Spirit Bomb, where it’s a one shot using the energy of others, this form becomes a part of him, and only because he was willing to ask for, and accept, the trust of his friends and family to take on the form.

Personally, my favorite outfits are the Resurrection F/U6 Tournament outfits for Goku and Vegeta. What a waste.

You guys completely hit the nail on the head regarding my feelings on Super Saiyan 2. When Gohan transformed against Cell the difference was huge. He bulked up, his hair went from spiking outwards to spiking upwards and his bangs became long, thin and stood more upright. Now that we have Super Saiyan 3 this looks more like a step towards the longer haired form. But from the Buu Saga onwards Super Saiyan 2 becomes an afterthought at best. Sure its mentioned in dialog and shown on screen but in terms of appearance it is near impossible to tell when someone has transformed to Super Saiyan 1 or 2. Yes I know with Goku they at least gave him a different fringe style between 1 and 2 with his two short side bangs and his one centred diagonal bang but Vegeta looks exactly the same in 1 and 2 as does Gohan and Trunks. Hell in the second Broly Movie Gohan is apparently Super Saiyan 2 against Broly but there's no lightening because they apparently forgot and yet we have no way of actually knowing because his adult Super Saiyan hair looks the same but shorter as his Super Saiyan 2 hair looked vs Cell. Just to rub salt in the wound when Super gave us Goku Vs Trunks they both supposedly transformed to Super Saiyan 2, where this fight was meant to show how far Trunks had come in power even though he could only train alone. But during the fight the animation team messed up the hair styles for both Trunks and Goku and even though they both had lightening their hairstyle was their Super Saiyan hairstyle not Super Saiyan 2. Short version: I wish everyone's Super Saiyan 2 appearance was as strikingly different as Gohans initial transformation was.

Super Saiyan 4 had Goku conquer the heart of his Oozaru form, full of rage, sorrow and vengeance, with love and compassion, for his family and his planet. It comes full circle, and it's wonderful

In regards Lani's point about Cell's insectoid genetic origins. I like to imagine that Gero went through several ideas in regards implementing the harvested genetic material but ultimately needed a host body to absorb the DNA and grow with it into a fully realized being. I theorise that Gero took an ordinary insect egg (maybe a Cicada?) and genetically augmented it with the DNA of Frieza and Earth's mightiest warriors. The end result being Cell. Though this does beg a question. Is there a lab out there somewhere with the failed experiments that would have been Cell had they been successful? Are there even cybernetic life forms that just never lived up to Gero's expectations? It's something we may never know but I'd personally love to see the manga explore the "Road to Perfection" as it were.

It’s a nice way to make them relevant again, and show that you can’t always do it alone, and that’s okay. On an unrelated note, when Goku arrived on Namek, he had mastered using Kaio-Ken to a point where he could turn it on and off so quickly and rapidly that none of his friends really realized that he was using it in the manga. Piccolo ended up pointing it out to the others while Goku fought Freeza. They should have noticed when Ginyu in Goku's body wasn't able to best anybody, but whatever. Anyway, this didn't get translated to the anime, which continued to use Kaio-Ken the old way until Super Saiyan hit. Another bit of info, in the manga, the Genki Dama used against Freeza was actually called the Super Genki Dama. The original Genki Dama was demonstrated at King Kai's before Goku returned to Earth. It had a completely different execution. Krillin never actually learned the technique, so him throwing it as a ball was his own doing. This isn't the first time a Super was added to a move name, as Goku introduced the Super Kamehameha in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. It was pretty much a different hand placement. All things said, Toriyama loves the word Super.

I will say in defense of LSSJ going against Toriyama’s usual design aesthetics, a rare exception sometimes can play into its strengths, and for me, LSSJ does well enough to hold its own as an exception.

LSSJ is the perfect representation of, well, the super saiyan of legend. Saiyans were unstoppable destroyers and killers, and who embodied that concept better than Broly? Paragus: "The true super saiyan! A KILLING MACHINE!"

Part of why I like the Legendary Super Saiyan design is because it looks so unlike your typical Saiyan transformation. Everything from the dramatic increase in muscle mass, to Broly's eyes turning pure white, to the off-kilter color of it, to even the way that it seems to explode out of his normal body makes it seem so much more monstrous and unnatural compared to what other transformations before and after it, playing into how Broly in that incarnation was supposed to be an unstable freak of nature. The Broly trilogy definitely has a TON of problems, but that form still hits hard for me because until Super, it was a form unique to him not because of training, but due to him being a complete monster.
