I'd like to suggest, Andy, and what I think I'm really hearing from you, is more of an INTERNSHIP. The "schools" which already exist and what you'd be competing against, can really only provide training in "basics and theory" in an environment which is quite sterile. (Push 'em, push 'em out) An internship would provide REAL WORLD applicability in systems trouble-shooting, repair, customer relations, business administration, marketing analysis, comprehension, and projection. There is within you, I feel, a real and earnest concern and consideration in ensuring that the industry HAS qualified, dependable, and honest representatives, mechanics, and business owners that can keep the ball moving forward. Another consideration could be doing a video course series that you could market through your own existing business and it appears that you'd do quite well doing such a project. (Just my take on this as a former military jet engine mechanic/ inspector and MA of History).

If I could do the course online at my own pace I'd do it. I don't have a lot of spare time but if it meant that I could fix my own garbage and save a few bucks overtime it would be worth it.

Well if I was close to you I just pay you to fix it but unfortunately I just fix my own boat even though it’s under warranty I had my boat less than 3 months tilt and trim breaks I call the dealer and they said it would take three months remember this is the same place I bought the boat and if I had let them have my boat at that point I would have given my boat up for the rest of the summer and half of the fall and I can’t do that I fish year round for everything I can’t afford 2 weeks really. Fortunately i followed the wires and one wire was. Unplugged boat I’ve had old boat talking about rebuilding carbs changing coils changing wire harness lower unit replacement spun prop replacement I’ve been lucky to never have the issue of actually digging into the motor

I never went to school for the marine world, but I grew up around it and learned how to work on my own stuff. Some automotive stuff can apply to this world, but not always. One thing I’ve always taken pride in is knowing the electrical side of the boats and motors, if you can figure that, the rest isn’t too complicated if

West channel closing dams eat again!!!! LOL! Those out of towners have a hard time with them. It’s a great place to set up with a bag of popcorn! Andy’s school of underboards and other mythical creatures! 😂 Seriously awesome to see masters willing to teach a trade to the next generation . For sure put on a training clinic. I owe my whole career to folks willing to share the knowledge and patient enough to deal with me while doing it. 80% of people learn by doing. Those folks cant pick it up from reading it in a book. Troubleshooting is a learned skill honed to a sharp point over time. The most enjoyable part of my career has been the last 5 years helping others develop there skill sets. It’s really rewarding.

I spent years hanging out at my friends shop. I rigged boats for free. I pulled out a meter and checked out different boat systems. I still use that experience today and loved every minute of it.

Just starting out with my kid . It's not cheap . Joined a bass club , switched from salmon and steelhead fishing sold the sled , sold the ski boat , bought a used Triton tr20. Sold salmon gear bought all new bass gear . Going full tilt on bass fishing starting my first tournament this month. Your right not cheap sport . But we need a hobby right . Lol great memories with your son what I'm going all in . He loves fishing for Bass so we will see where this new adventure takes us . Love your videos keep up the good work.

The lesson with Mason made me realize how much you learn or absorb by hands on experience. I am an ASE master truck tech over 30 years. There is a lot I know that I don't remember learning. The school of hard knocks are lessons not forgotten. Great content I just found the channel & have been binging!

Hey Andy, Here's my take on being a mechanic in the marine world... You have to be a jack of all trades type, not a Merc guy or a Yamaha guy,,, an everything guy. From reed valves on the crank like the old Mercs to plug and play of today. You need to be a mechanic/electrician/engineer/ and most important, a think outside the box kinda person. It takes years, not books to be a great marine mechanic and a mentor,(my dad was mine). I truly enjoy your videos, keep up the good work and remember, there's 2 ways around every circle, the jobs not done until the circle is complete.

How do you knock a full blade off a stainless steel prop without trashing the prop shaft or gear case. I used to work on outboards and every one of them that I have ever seen had shaft damage or a completely trashed gear case.

Love your statement about tech education and what seems to be school in general. I know they can't put you in every situation but to give a basic knowledge about each aspect of boats. I actually hear the same from couple of my buddies who own a diesel shop. Keep up the tough love education he learned more in that five minutes than five days of school.

Man I am a automotive/ heavy duty tech. And I also work on boats. I love watching your videos. But this one by far is has been great. My biggest weakness when it come to boats is props and setting up jack plates it will make me pull my hair out. That is something I would love to learn more about. If you can make a video in the future about setting the height of an outboard it would be amazing.

Great idea guys on the education . There is nothing like having hands on learning from guys that live it everyday. Trade schools anymore really lack the common sense approach of getting customers taken care of in a timely fashion. I see it in my industry everyday.

I'm a 25yr carpenter and I fell off a roof 2 yrs ago and was injured and have been looking for marine schools near me to change careers. I love boats and fishing and believe you guys are the most knowledgeable boat guys out there. I've always had older motors, and I haven't in 20 yrs, found "my boat guy". But I want to be that boat guy!!! I would sign up for classes for sure!!!

Andy: speaking of props, I recently saw a full page ad in a boat mag for a "Sharrow Propeller". They are an unusual design and are NOT cheap-5 grand per prop! Have you ever seen one of these in use?

It's really cool to see you working with and teaching a younger tech. I Started in the mechanical field almost 30 years ago and still remember a lot that the guys had taught me. Nothing is better than being in the field getting the experience. Its sad that schools don't teach the basics any more

Do you mount your Lowrance transducer thats at the back of the boat at an upward angle to counter out the back of the boat sinking down while idling? To keep it level. Your images are so clear.

School idea is great. Maybe even a patron option. At different levels we’re you could FaceTime with guys thru there problems. At a cost of course. Picked time slots , maybe even involve your other techs to help in there areas of expertise. I can see it working if it’s layed out properly.

Andy, get me a number and the contact for Suzuki and I will let them know how your channel here helped me make the decision on purchasing the 250 SS. And by the way, I just rolled 300 hrs on my 2020 model purchased in August of that yr. The majority of that time was spent at idle with some mid to top-end speeds also involved for a 12 min run both ways when fishing. I fish in the only Natural lake in Texas which is the largest cypress tree forest in N. America . Filled with cypress stumps and trees. Most likely running second to Tom Monsour and lower units lol. It is a great motor for my ChanpioN 203. I love it!

We use to work on the big twin 35 hp Evinrude in the cottage livin room when any number of things busted. We were all headed for engineering school, been wrenching go karts, making our own motor bikes out old lawn mowers with angle iron from forsale signs. That took all summer and help from the mower shop. We didn’t have guys like you around and motors were a lot simpler. Now the motors say “ Touch this and go to jail”.

@yelyab1 I had a pair of 1964 big twin 40HP Evenrudes on a 1964 Chris Craft, My grandfather bought the boat brand new in 1964! In 1980 I inherited that boat after my grandfather passed away, In 1988 I purchased an Evinrude 88 SPL! That boat spent every summer of its life docked in salt water at the jersey shore, Those motors never had any issues and ran perfectly when they were removed! Those old Evinrude’s ran great!

Awesome you guys are helping the kids out! My nephew is doing the BASS high school thing. I agree on the industry needing to step up and help the kids. The kid won overall points fishing (as a sophomore)out of a 16' boat with a old 20hp tiller and a shitty trolling motor. Fishing against kids with ff sonar, twin power poles and 250's. He works as much as any kid I've ever seen and spends every dime on tackle. The kid can fish and I'd love to see how he could do if he had every tool in the toolbox. Or at least fish on a level playing field.

I wanted to more of that Lund. I have the same problem with my boat but my trim works just very low rpm’s, a 115 pro xs on a 18 foot aluminum bass boat.

We would always be able to figure some form of exit exam that could be offered online for the individuals the couldn't make the journey

Born again boating covered similar topic about the over trim code forces outboard into a semi-guardian mode when over a certain RPM. Case studies to diagnose relevant most common scenarios would probably be the focus likely. If it wasn't for the huge liability headache, I would love a one or two day hands on diagnostic session after completing a competency test first so it's not wasting the teacher's time with a student. Maybe FaceTime/videoconference of them having their own equipment they diagnose with as an alternative during the slow months of the year. Not doing the work for them, but helping them to develop the ability to actually diagnose.

I have a 2009 250 merc with the same issue. Cant get over 5500 and 52mph in my ranger. It feels glued to the water like you said. I have almost no bow lift. As for your nephew, he will learn way more hands on than in books at college. Not to mention its cheaper.

Great video team marine!! Keep em coming. I agree with the schooling issue but i think the problem is its a tech school in less than 2 years. I graduated from mmi in 08 and quickly realized there were alot of gaps that were not filled but with the right crew and team work anything is possible. School cant teach everything. My Lund ProGuide fuel gauge drives me crazy. It says empty and I still have like 9-10 gallons in the tank. Which is fine, but frustrating as well in the sense that I don’t really know where empty is. I’m wondering if there is a setting on the sender arm or a calibration on the gauge like tach sometimes has. I’ll pull it apart this winter and take a look.

I like the idea of a marine school. My thought immediately goes to helping people that need hope. Lost teens that need mentoring, Those that are rehabilitating those incarcerated, recovering addicts, retiring military, etc. Maybe working with the high school education system if they want to expand their vocational program for those not interested in college. Our local high school allows students that are not pursuing college and interested in vocational to spend half their day doing internship work with local business too get hands on experience before leaving high school with many having a decent paying job straight out of high school. Maybe if you work with your local and state government you might get some funding or grants to start a educational work program.

You did videos on best 250 and 200, which 175 do you think is best? Also, your ranking or determined best fuel economy motor? I know boat dictates a lot of that but if you compare with a base and go from there, not sure if that's been touched often during the overall comparison of best motors etc. Thanks, your info is great

We've done a lot of 250 battles and some 200 battles. When it comes to fuel economy Suzuki has it in our opinion.

On the lund trim . The water was coming off ahead of the windshield so what would be the optimal location for the water spray to look for ?

Thank you . I have a 185 ( 18' 9" alumicraft Trophy. Not sure what length the Lund was but would be real close to same boat . Mine weighs empty at 1800 lbs and has a 2022 Suzuki 150 on it . I'm in Montana so my low altitude starts at 2300 and goes up to 6400 . Should be at 6000 rpm but loaded for fishing at 3300 ft I only get 5200 rpm with a 21 pitch prop . Have ordered a 19 prop but not sure if I need to raise motor or not ? The deflection plate looks to be even wit the bottom of boat and I'm getting a lot of splash at the transom on plane ? Is prop best place to start ? Is there anything available to help with altitude ? My dealer is warners in Wisconsin so taking to dealer is really not an option and they don't have a prop exchange program .

Fix the trim on that Lund, open up the computer still stuck in break in..21 tempest plus should run 58 on the pad, raise motor up motor another hole. She will chine wiggle if you get up on the pad full out.

I'm having the same problem as the Lund on my new G3 20 CC 150 Yamaha SHO. 5100 rpm and 44 mph, the 115 runs same speed higher rpms. I'm not far from u guys, any chance of getting in to see you?

Where is the cav plate wrt to the bottom? Is motor too deep? Most boats according to a lot of motor mfg’s is that boat builders mount motors too low.

That’s what my boat was doing I lost the bolt that connects the trim rod to the motor my gauge was not indexed and it wouldn’t not let me run the motor it went into protection mode

I watched your video on the lund tyee. I own a 2020 lund 1875 pro v sport with a mercury 150 pro xs. I've taken it to the dealer several times due to the prop loosing grip when turning. I've owned four inherent lund boats and have had none of them loosing grip with the water. They went with me and the boat acted up on them to. They said to slow down. I stated " you must be crazy. Take a turn at 25mph the prop should not blow out. There's an issue. They stated , I don't know what to say. Can I make an appointment for you to test the boat with me and fix the issue once and for all.
