I had an iKon on order, full options with 5 screens, FFS and 360, with the PP Move troller, plus a stereo and cover...$131k. I was so excited. I went to the classic and saw them in person, I met Jacob Wheeler (super nice guy!), bought an iKon jersey, and then sat in the boat with one of the other pros for a while and asked questions. My wife says to me, "I'm not impressed. What are we paying for?" I had no words. So I canceled the order and I bought a 2 year old Caymus (same equipment but Garmin) and saved $55k. Glad I married that woman. I'm still wearing that jersey though...

Buy an older boat and keep it up to date with accessories, it will force manufacturers to drop the prices. Running a 2000 Ranger R91, with upgrades it can hang with the new ones for 1/5 the price

About 15 years ago I heard a wealthy fast food owner say to his buddy (during a small economic downturn) that he would be damned if he was going lower his 35% profit margin. So he raised prices. He was unwilling to take a short term hit for his customers, employees, vendors. We are seeing greed at play here. As another commenter stated, stop purchasing and the prices will adjust. The problem is easy loans and illogical debt forgiveness is a death throw to adjustments done by supply and demand.

That is why I still have my Skeeter WX1900 fully rigged. Still works because I was going to purchase a Ranger FS 621 and when it came back quoted at 119k I said no, but hells no. Looked at the Skeeter WX series as a replacement also could not find anything below 100k new to replace my boat. My insurance company increased my policy to cover replacement at 150k for a boat I paid with all rigging for kicker, jack plate for kicker, electronics at console and bow, electronic bottom tracking down riggers at 2 each for a price of 43k

35% profit margin? From what I understand that is unheard of. Are you sure he didn't say "3 to 5 percent"? 3 to 5 percent would be considered a decent profit margin in most businesses.
@lightning9279
@lightning9279 Жыл бұрын
@@thorpypoo James, yes from what I recall he did say 35%. I heard this once before as well. I was in a chat(above my intellectual pay grade) that was discussing investing in pure gold jewelry. I made a comment that the price tag was unnecessarily high. The spot price of gold at that time compared to the cost of the jewelry was way out of line which made it an irrisponsicple financial decision. Two guys jumped in the conversation and stated that I didn't know what I was talking about and If they were the manufacturer of that jewelry they would charge a price that reflected a minimum of a 35% profit rate. It's been about 6 years since that conversation and I can't remember the businesses they were both in. I wonder if they are as cocky in this current economy.

I think it's both, but I'd put it more on the accessories. Trolling motor prices are nuts, graph prices are nuts...you can buy a 12" tablet that has more processing power and a better display for $600, but they wanna charge us $3k-4k for a unit.... Would love to see the margins on some of this stuff

That dude from ikon got a little ticked off when everyone was saying 150k was too much to spend on a bass boat. Accused you of just trying to get viewers because you “are just another KZbinr”. Truth really seemed to Piss him off. Keep being honest Andy, that’s why I subscribed. You could have easily shilled for him and promoted him, but you did the right thing, you looked out for us. I wouldn’t buy an ikon simply because of the way he reacted, ya just can’t blame someone else because of the price of your boat. There wasn’t any part of those reviews where you attacked them in any way. Fuck em.

Great video, there's so much to blame for this, politics, laziness (people who don't want to work for their fish) greed from all manufacturers. This could go on and on. There are so many fisherman that are outclassed by their boat that think they are hotshots and really are just trash fisherman. I've co-angled with them! I blame the people who are handing out entitlement too

I bought my boat, brand new, no loan, added a jack plate, a 112 ultrex, and lithium batteries. One 9” unit at the console. 150 merc 198P I’ll add that BS later when I can afford it I’ve added little stuff like DD26 motor tote, TH marine troll tamer, and pull cable. And vessel view, which makes me mad, why mercury doesn’t just install a 200 dollar deal to the motor and add it to the overall cost is beyond me. Yeah, by the time I’m done in 10 years time I will have poles, 360, livescope, a few more units Nobody wants to do what I’m doing tho, a lot of people just want it all on there cuz they can’t do it themselves the right way, and it’s almost impossible to get into a dealer to get stuff done. They are either winterizing boats, or getting boats “ready” for spring, by wintering them after winter, or rigging new ones for the customers that just bought them. Like you said, the boat, motor, trolling motor, batteries, trailer are what’s important, I can fish with that. The rest I can figure out later. I’d rather be debt free and own what I have than mortgage my house to buy a fully loaded boat all in one swipe. But that’s todays world, everyone wants a big house, new cars, big screens, latest phones, riding lawn mowers, all at once and just go into massive debt to do it. I’m 35 years years old and have a house payment and utilities, own our 3 vehicles, and boat out right, no credit card debt. And by no means am I rich. I’m a blue collar worker making a living with a wife, 2 kids, a dog, and a cat. I saved every dime I could without making my family go without, for the last ten years to be able to buy that boat outright. But if customers are willing to pay for a boat 3-4x over that 120k price, you better believe dealers and boat makers are willing to provide it to them. For something as frivolous as a boat, to catch a fish, my thought is if you can’t pay cash for what you have, you can’t afford it. But 99.9% of people will disagree with that sentiment.

Agreed, would truly like to know actual manufacturer cost. Everything from boat to engines to electronics and trolling motor. Every business needs to make money but how much per item sold. Things are priced for what you can sell them for, if a large percentage of customers say its too much, they either have to figure a away to make it cheaper or make less per unit.

If it wasn't for easy financing and fairly low interest rates the amount of people that own the boats they do would not own them. These companies would have a LOT harder time selling the boats they do. Most of the boats being bought are being bought by people whom can't really afford them.

Subtracted down to just the boat, no tralier no motor no electronics or tm. Paid 25-26k for just boat. Actually made me feel better. I looked at the cx20 but 10k more for 25hp and 12 inches. Couldnt see it. Get 67-70 mph out of the 19 and it is easier to get in around docks flipping. Love it so far!!! Great video!!!

One for the trolling motor and one for electronics. One 250 engine with Jack plate. Two power poles and a trolling motor. I think u can do it for half the price of new and still have a great boat able to fish any tournament.

A point to make too is that the Boat Trailers them selves have gone up 3-5 times in the last 15-20 years. My 05 Triton TR21X Trailer was around 3,500$ new. A friend of mine was unfortunately in highway traffic accident with his 21' Phoenix boat and Trailer. His Trailer is now totaled and he's getting prices of 12,000-13,000$ to replace it with a new one.

As crazy as it sounds I always thought there should be more of an incentive for different classes in tournaments. For instance a tournament where live scope type systems are not allowed. Limited outboard motor size etc maybe limited to 1 graph at bow and one at console. Right now all competitive fishing is "run what you" brung type stuff. And the budget minded angler cannot compete . Maybe we should push for some classes/tournaments to maybe get more people into the sport to where they can be competitive without taking out a second mortgage.

Also most of those larger units in the same style say like Helix don't upgrade the hardware do they? And even if they do are they putting 2k of chips into the units?

It's a combination of both the boat manufacturers and the manufacturers of the accessories. They all price it higher because people are willing to pay to have the best of everything. In all honesty, I love fishing and do perfectly with my old 89 astroglass I picked up fairly cheap in great condition. It's just about getting out and having fun and many people lost sight of that by being so willing to over pay just to have the newest and best stuff that's out there

I am an aviation guy, but now I am getting into boats because the used market is way more affordable than the used plane market. It may take me another ten years to save up for a plane to have good times with my kids when they are practically out of the house. So I bought a used Jon boat and took it out on the lake with them. They had a blast, and everyone, including myself, had smiles on our faces. I did it for $1200.

Andy I love this video because it shows how out of touch this industry has become. I am retired from Mercedes Benz and wanted to share a story. A zone rep and I were talking about the same thing rising cost He was driving one of the SUV Benz offered putting real world miles on it. The tires were worn out so He contacted his boss and was going to order a set of tires and have them mounted by us at the Dealer. His boss said no, He would have the tires sent to the dealer. To all of our surprise a full set of new tires wheels with center caps and lug bolts arrived balanced and ready to install!! Later the rep told me he was told the complete tire and wheel assemblies were less expensive than paying a Tech to mount and balance a set of new tires and install them. !!!! The most expensive part of any car or truck is the interior !!!! Not the electronics or the Drive train hardware. A complete frame for the older ML series SUV cost them around 1200 dollars complete!!!. (This was prior to them becoming uni-body) So since the tin boats don't have a mold for the hull or the interior insert I don't get it. The Glass boats should be going down in price because it's quick construction and repeatable. I think the industry is and has priced it's self out of the ball park. Look at how the custom boat industry has died in southern California.. And I just checked the price of a Aluminum / Wake Boat from Montara and it looks to be priced for those who also have a 900k + aircraft sitting in their hanger that will get used just about as much.. It's sad to see the Boating industry going the way of General Aviation. Thanks Andy

I work at a Bass Boat company. Not sure how to start this off. Everything has gone up in price. Yes resin & glass have gone up multiple times. The gel coat has gone up. The freight costs have gone up also on everything. I know afew companies have invested in CNC machining over the last several years. So every boat cut-out is identical. The company I work for - every single boat is hand built. The same people do & build the same things each day. They are good at what they do. Each boat is built per order - yes - each boat we are building is someone's order. The company I work for - there are NO cookie cutter boats made !!! Not real sure who is to blame - the price of EVERYTHING !!!

Even that was bought used. I put a better trolling motor on it and upgraded the finders. I have a 5 on the console and a 4 at the bow. They show all I need, which is depth and temp. Most high schoolers would probably laugh, but it suits my needs. And I don't have 50 K in it. I hope it lasts as long as I do because no way could I afford any new one.

Here's one for you to think about. With same electronics, motor, trolling motor, etc. Why is one brand 15k higher than another or vise versa. Materials in building a boat is the weight of that boat. So I did some research! The Basscat Lynx is 20'8" and weighs in at 2150#. The Phoenix 921 is 21'6" and weighs in @ 1950#. The Ranger 521R is 21'9" and is 2300#. The Nitro Z21 is 21'2" and weighs 2150#. Now with this being said they all weigh about the same yet the Nitro is approx 30k less than Basscat, what makes Basscat better than Nitro when they both weigh the same. THINK ABOUT IT

Great show, nice to see someone in the industry trying to make us aware. In my opinion it's our fault as consumers. The industry keeps pumping out latest and greatest and we as fishermen keep buying it and putting it on our boats. We were catching fish way before forward facing sonar hit the market and now it seems like we can't fish without it. As long as we keep paying they are going to keep jacking up the price.

Customers. Ultimately we create the demand. The Instagram age has accelerated the “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality and spread it to people you don’t even know in person. I truthfully crappie fish 90% of the time and accidentally catch 3-4 bass every time I go out. The perception of needing 20k in electronics on a boat has created this weird space where people are financing boats for 20-30yrs.

The amount of people, including professional tournament fisherman still can't catch Sh¡t with their fancy electronics because they don't know how to read water and structure, and don't know how to properly work lures and in which situations to throw each lure type.

In the 80’s and early 90’s, BASS limited HP to 150. By default, that limited boat size to 17-18’. A 24v trolling motor was plenty. The gas on the price fire is size of boat and HP. A bigger boat needs bigger trolling motor and more batteries. Electronics will always be the fisherman’s toys. Size of the boat drive the price up dramatically.

What is the technology that is different in my 600 dollar 75 inch 4k tv than a 15 inch any brand graph? They both receive a signal from a source and display it. I understand weather and the sheer durability of a graph but good god, there can’t be that big of a difference to really justify the price difference and size.

You need to call and have a conversation with John Webb at Marine Works of KY. John put together a “working Man’s Package” for each of Phoenix most popular boats. Very affordable and reasonably decked out. I took his 819 pro XP working man package upgraded some areas; just over 70K out the door for my custom ordered boat. John is the man and understands how to put fishermen in a new boat and try to keep it somewhat affordable.

Well if you take out the 5+ graphs, expensive trolling motor, power poles, multiple sensors, & all the other electronics that dramatically drops the price. Put a limit on electronics that would help, go back to old days.

Love you vids. They’re pricing the biggest purchasing base out of the market. The middle class. You can still by a nice house for 130k in Texas. Of you sell to only rich people, you will have to build limited amounts of boats like Ferrari does. Ford sells more cars and trucks in a day that Ferrari makes in a year. It’s called the walmart plan. If you sell 10x more for less, you will make more profit than the one you sell for premium price. Now if the boat you build is premium and you only sell to the rich you wont make as much. Rich people are to blame also. As I mentioned Ford, the Ford F250/350 are priced out of their market for the working man that needs that tool! Rich guys buy them just to ride around in a big truck to look cool. Never put it in 4 wheel drive! Crazy.

I have a question, so if you’re a tournament fisherman are you able to make the money back to pay off the boat? And if you’re a weekend warrior do you just pay that kind of money just to use it only during the season, also is it worth paying that kind of money just to go out on the water to catch and release?

My first Skeeter bass boat cost $8100 in 1980. It had a Evinrude 140 hp, 24 volt trolling motor, one locator. The next one in 1987 was $18k. I switched to aluminum in 2004 a Lund Pro V with a 115 Yamaha, for $40k. I have bought new boats every 4 years or so and the price has gotten crazy. I have now downsized to a 17 ft aluminum with a 75 hp tiller and 9k worth of electronics. Could not justify the price of a new bass boat.

No jackplate, No power pole. Fish finder with GPS & downscan. It's OK and we're ok. I WILL NOT SPEND $50K on a boat, Much less A $100k or more. Our house in 2010 cost us $93k. bla-bla-bla... just my 2cents...

I’m 37 years old I spent all my life fishing from the bank from a small aluminum boat or from a kayak. I finally just bought my first bass boat 1988 Skeeter SD 125 with 120 horse Johnson v4. I’ve spent the last five months fully restoring the boat. I purchased the boat motor and trailer for $1500 and when finished I had another 6000 into it. I cannot afford $100,000 boat nor will I spend that on a boat I’m very handy, so I’m perfectly fine with what I have done.

#1 is the customer. We want it all and they are happy to provide it. Can we blame the companies? Maybe, probably but how are they going to give us what we want if they don't make money off of it? Inflation and the economy as a whole is a HUGE HUGE factor. Just look at everything else... cost of goods, cost of homes etc.. Super Low interest rates for way too long.. too much money printed.. etc.. Lots and lots of factors together. Not just one thing or entity..

Unfortunately everything now days is overpriced. That's just the new norm. If the demand is high, price will go up. Auto industry did the same. Last year here in Canada, dealers couldn't keep pick up trucks in their lots. If you went into a dealer, unless you were ready to sign and wait, they didn't even look at you.

The cost of everything has gone up. That being said, demand drives the market. Something is worth what the consumer will pay. Accessories or boats, it doesn’t matter. It’s worth what someone will pay. Yeah to answer your question in the video I bought my first house for 89,000.

When Covid hit, I think everyone bought up every boat and rv they could get their hands on trying to get outside to do things while tired of being locked out of their lives. Then with the supply chain issue prices continued to skyrocket. Add very high fuel prices and companies had to cover themselves for shipping all of the materials to make the products. Recipe for disaster. Just my take on it. Hope prices come back down sooner than later.
@ClemonsBoats

Not sure who to blame, but inflation is the biggest issue. We have seen boat prices jump 20% since 2020 and Covid debacle. The best case is we don’t see price hikes at model change over like normal once inflation slows and things normalize. I can tell you for a fact that a $100,000 boat today was $80-$85k in 2020 equipped the same way. Add in a new power pole charger, two active targets instead of one, maybe a 360, a turret and all the new goodies and they get very high. As you said in the video, everything that goes into building the boat is more in materials. Labor costs have went up as nobody wants to do the work to build the boats anymore. Then add the accessories and prices are crazy.
