I have lived in Napier since 1989 and my entire family is in Auckland. So I have done this run many times. There are no towns between Napier and Taupo. A scenic tour that takes a smidge under an hour and half. Nowadays one hardly ever goes to Taupo because there is a bypass. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes off a trip to Auckland or Tauranga. A bit of a pity because Taupo is picturesque owing to the massive Lake Taupo and the views of the massive mountains to the south of Lake Taupo.
