Yes! DEFINITELY do a boat buyer's guide series! We'll be buying our first big boat (40'ish) this year. The more info (especially unbiased info!) that I can get ahead of time, the better! Thank you!

I know I mentioned it in another post, but I have dealt with BoatUS insurance for over 20 years and 6 vessels both old and new and never had any problems with them. They are easy to work with and handle claims efficiently.
@ralphholiman74013 жыл бұрын
That's who we've been using for about eight years now. Except for the steadily increasing premiums (with no claims), every year, we're okay with them.

I think the whole insurance, survey and broker issue come from the lack of knowledge from yacht owners in any large size class. Most people that can afford large vessels don't have the knowledge of even simple maintenance like oil changes. Thus you get everyone trying to offer "services". Clearly you guys know better than most. This is why we follow your channel.

New Insurance limits have now forced us to look for a smaller boat since they have all now chosen not to insure anything over 40' that is older than 30 years. We're bummed but not beaten. We settled for a smaller starter boat, 40' Silverton. In 2 years hopefully we'll get our 47' Carver. Thank you guys for all your wisdom, we look forward to every episode. You can see our new boat on our next epusode

Nice! can’t wait to see it. Sorry you couldn’t get the boat you had your sights on. I will say that bigger isn’t always better... we’ve learned that the hard way. 40 is actually a really good size, especially if you plan on using it a lot. You nail down a marina yet?
@KnottyDeez3 жыл бұрын
@@TeamWiff Ohhh, You aren't gonna believe how our Marina plans turned out. During Thanksgiving week we were forced to move to another AirBnB (with 3 dogs, its always a MAJOR challenge). With the Holiday traffic and our dogs, we booked a place in Hudson Beach, which up until then, we had never heard of. We were shocked to find an entire community of homes on Deep Water Canals, still available to own for considerably under $300k. Then, after finding that no matter where we stayed in a Marina, we were basically looking at over $1k /mo taking into account marina fee, liveaboard fee, electric etc... So... we just bought a house. A small 2 bedroom where we can "Home Port" our boat, rent the Unit as an AirBnB and create some income that won't require us to stay put. Basically that is all going to be revealed over our next two episodes....So, you just got some preview info. Should be moving aboard next Mon or Tue, then Closing on the house a week or two later.

I live where this is going! I wish we had similar prices like that in SWFL. We too would’ve just bought a home. We did however recently discover canal homes are reasonable in the Sarasota area, but that was too little too late for us. We’ll definitely tune in to your upcoming vids.

Hi there Tiff and Will. Good advice on the boat insurance. Insurance companies suck in general. I am going to have to go back and watch some of your videos from the beginning of your adventure to get some insight on the bluewater. Brokers eating babies was soooo funny lol!!!!!!

We talk to an insurance agency or who some call broker or carrier, then they talk to the underwriters, there are not that many underwriters. Loyds for example covers many different agencies, all agencies having different rules, same with the other underwriters, its only a handful of underwriters(like five) and one just stopped the boat insurance part of its portfolio. So we have one less underwriter. The agencies have certain responsibilities, not sure what they all are. They create a risk assessment box, income vs losses, and liveaboards being a small percentage are not considered in the evaluation. Most are not sure how to evaluate liveaboards, so some agencies will take on some policies and the risk, others wont. Thats how it was explained to me by a couple big agencies.

So does insurance cost more to liveaboard? Thanks for all your info

Dave Barry, once quipped that the main goal of airlines, was to make sure that no two people on a plane, paid the same amount for their ticket. I often think that is true with insurance companies and boats, as well. I found when getting our quote, that asking for multiple quotes over several days, from the same company, with the exact same information, ended up with different pricing. That doesn't give you a lot of faith about the price you end up with.

wondering if your still a broker and what area? is it possible to get a liveable live-abord for under 30k? and is it true that you cant get a loan on a boat if its more than 20 years old?

I found a boat on dry land. Owner will not allow for water trial due to it not being insured. He said ha can hook it up with water hose and run engine. Is that a possibility?
