For some reason I was not expecting that people outside of Italy would watch this episodic movie (in the end that's what it actually is). It makes me really proud of Zerocalcare's (the author and main character) growth and achievements. Sadly a lot of things are lost on a foreign viewer as many bits and themes are heavily based on the Italian and specifically Roman culture, without even mentioning the non-verbal language and Roman dialect. I am so glad though that non-Italians would enjoy and appreciate his work, another tear added to the ones triggered by this movies :')

He has been tackling themes even deeper than usual, coming from events that happened to him and his friends in real life (not going to spoil the ending). His growth is from struggling to find even a part-time job as an illustrator and designer to having his strips featured on important magazines to having his own comic books to landing an animated series on Netflix. Isn't this growth? And I said movie in contrast with tv series episodes, as it is one cohesive and organic movie of 1 hour and a half-ish broken down in 6 parts

I think the reason why in english the series is dubbed with a very strong british accent is beacause in original italian Zerocalcare speaks in roman dialect: they probably tried to give to english native speakers the same "regional taste" it has for italians.

I don't think scottish would work. Roman speech is quite peculiar and fast paced, but Italians tend to understand it quite easily as it's the capital city dialect and quite familiar to everyone thanks to decades of cinema and television shows by Roman actors and comedians. Scottish is very hard to understand even for english speakers.

it really amazes me the fact this show is having so much praise outside Italy too, Zerocalcare definitely deserves this. I litteraly devoured the six episodes, and really didn't see the endind coming... it's incredible how Zero manages to make the audience laugh, cry, deeply think about a whole lot of different situations and feelings related to modern employment and social relationships that every person in their 30's can relate. I didn't expect it to have a foreing dubbing, since the language in this show is strictly linked to the region and the city of Rome itself, but I was pleasanlty impressed to find out that they decided to follow the original and chose a strong british dialect. this is definitely a must watch.

As both an Italian and English speaker, i think that they could have gone further with the dubbing, instead of a strong British accent, they would have gone with a 'soft' London slang. By 'soft' i mean without too many strange terms or words but just with the most well known and stereotypical ones. The British accent gave some of the original dubbings' vibes, but in my opinion it was still too refined. But still, i think the dubbing was done really well, they even adapted many of the Roman figures of speech or expressions excellently.

Something like "Two tasti ("tastes" but with the italian ending "i" for the plural) è (italian for "is") betteR (with a very strong R) than uni (italian "uno" but distorted)".

About the fast pace of the dialogues and the serie, Zerocalcare (the author/protagonist) said in an interview: "I grew up listening punk hardcore, everything slower than punk it sounds to me like a lament" (he is also straight edge like many in the hardcore movement)

Zerocalcare is great. The series is a masterpiece. It perfectly describes the generations of the Italian eighties and nineties. Ravaged by unemployment, insecurity, frustration, depression and poverty. The series is also nice and funny. As an Italian and citizen of Rome, who comes from a poor neighborhood like Zerocalcare, I am proud of him. Greetings from Italy.

The reason for the "weird" dubbing is because, even in italian, the guy has a HUGE roman accent. To the point that, if you are from another part of italy, you really have to go back a few seconds and hear it once again, just to make sure you understood what he said. So maybe they wanted to reproduce the same ezperience...

about the dubbing issue: as many people have already written, the Italian version is more specifically in Roman dialect and the dubber is Zerocalcare himself, who is the graphic novel writer and the protagonist. as far as I know, Zerocalcare isn't a professional dubber and I believe that this makes his performance even more authentic; moreover since he's reading his own work it also feels more heartfelt. *SPOILER ALERT* last but not least, I don't about the other versions, but in the Italian one Zerocalcare dubbs all the characters (apart from his conscience), except at the end. remember when he runs out of the building where the ceremony for Alice is hold? he starts falling deep into his thoughts as he's done through all the serie, when Sarah comes and tries to comfort him; in that scene her character is dubbed by a person different from Zerocalcare, and from that moment on also the others. I interpreted that as someone (I'll end writing this comment in another moment)

This is sort of like Asterix and Obelix in the way it arose: The author of this has been making comic books with this style and these themes, always with himself as the main character, for over 10 years, and this Netflix show is only the tip of the iceberg. If you want more of this, while you wait for a second season, you can read "The Armadillo's Prophecy", "Kobane Calling", or a number of other works from the author. And CORRECTION: The British dub is the only English dub available, because you simply cannot adapt Italian expressions with "standard" English.

Only the walk-ons who spoke only Italian had Italian accents, but hearing the main cast when they threw Italian expressions simply reminded me those voice actors didn't actually speak the language, but I appreciated the efforts and the people who made the dialogues.

I think the british accent is a good way to convey his way of talking. Probably an Italian accent would make it a little strange, but if you read the subtitles you lose a lot because he talks very fast.

I came here late but I just want to give you (to all non-italian speakers) a little more about the "netflix catalog moment" (1x01 at 10:00) because, except for Fast and Furious 75, there are many more jokes and I will explain them from top to bottom (because it deserves): 1) "Luminoso" = It is Bright, the Netflix movie with Will Smith. The jokes here is that the title it is just a mere translation from eng to ita. 2) "Fast and Furious 75" = nothing to add here 3) "Sta' ar trec - Aridaje" = The title is a phonetic transcription of the english title, but the subtitle means "reboot" in roman dialect. 4) "A guera" = This is just a simple war movie, and, obviusly, the title is just "the war" but translated in roman dialect. if it had been translated into Italian, it would have been "La guerra" If you want to deep dive in the absurd world of italian dialects, you can start from here because here you have two example of what the roman dialect does with the grammatical rules: doubles letter became one and the articles (in italy, we have articles for every gender and plurality) lose some pieces along the way. 5) "Hill Hause" = it is just Hill House but the "o" is replaced with "a" because, in italy, we read the vocals always the same way and your "o" in the word "house" is an "a" for us. 6) "The Corona" = It is just a translation of "crown" = "Corona" 7) "Nun ce capisci un cazzo" = This is obviously Dark, but instead of a translation it is a short description of the the series which translated is: "you don't understand a single thing". Of course, it is written in roman dialect and the literally translation is "You don't understand a penis". Don't ask me why, but using the word "cazzo" is like a reinforcement that goes well with everything, as you can see from point 8 8) "La regina de sticazzi" = Here we have a funny joke about the fact that "The Queen's Gambit" in italian is named "La regina degli scacchi" and "scacchi" is phonetical similar to "sticazzi". And "sticazzi" is "sti" + "cazzi", that means "this penis". And that's the joke. EDIT: I forgot to mention that "regina" means "queen". 9) "Pischelli che s'ennamoreno" = I don't understand the reference, but the translation is just "teens that fall in love". "Pischelli" is the slang word for teens and "ennamoreno" is the roman dialect verb for "to fall in love". I think is a joke like point 4. 10) "Brigida Gions è pregna" = Here we have something layered. Brigida Gions is a roman transcription of the name Birdget Jones and "è pregna" means "is pregnant". As you can see, "pregna" and "pregnant" are really similar, and the mean the same thing, but the jokes here is that no one would use "pregna" to mean "pregnant" because the translation of "pregna" is "fullfilled", also it is an old word that difficult would be used in the speech. 11) "Me te magno 'a milza - Amore e cannibalismo" = this is a roman translation of "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" and there is a little joke about the fact that the "milza" is the "spleen", not the pancreas (fortunally pancreas is the same in eng and ita) but, for reasons unknown to me, the "milza" is an overused word in the roman dialect: if you have stomach ache, you'll probably says "me fa male la milza"="my spleen hurts me" or if someone hits you in the stomach you'll probably says "m'hanno dato un pguno nella milza"="the punch me in the spleen". Also, since Roman cuisine uses many offal, including the spleen, it is common to find this term at the butcher or in your grandmother's kitchen. 12) "Me prima di te" = this is just a literal translation of "Me Before You". After here browse the central line there are some other gems: 13) "Semo spartani" = this is "300" and the title means "We are spartans". Nothing more. 14) "Te magno" = this is Jaws, and the meaning of the title is "I eat you" but in roman dialect. 15) "Come innamorasse de tu madre ner passato" = That's my favourite. This is like point 7 (Dark), it is a description of the film and it means "How to fall in love with your mother but in the past". I don't think I have to add anything. 16) "Amore ar tempo de na pandemia" = that's a funny reference to "Love in the Time of Cholera" but instead of Cholera there is "pandemia" that is your "pandemic". PS: these are 90% my interpretations, so some things may not be accurate. Either way, I hope I've given you more insight. The only thing I'm sorry is not being able to give you more information about the flood of easter eggs scattered throughout the series that are already difficult to understand by an Italian audience, let alone a foreign one.

Because what struck me when I tried it was how it had been severely toned down from the original! Zerocalcare is well known and very loved graphic novelist that use his work to talk about social and political issues, and he is so fun. The series is a gem, but also in Italy someone amuses himself criticizing the slang he used in the cartoon, affirming that he talk too fast to understand all the terms and that outside Rome it’s difficult to understand. Bullshits! Zero is exactly this, you love him like he is or pass away.

They probably made it in Blimey because Zerocalcare speaks with stronc roman accent! I would suggest to watch both version. I watched it together for comparison and you lose something, like way of simply saying things that only romans do and other italians can acknowledge (i'm sardinian). But...I think that the english version is not really bad! I think would be enjoybale for english viewers! So my advise: watch them both in original language and then in english!

Thanks for watching and reviewing, man, I'm getting all excited about people around the world taking an interest in what comes out of Italy these days (as opposed to, stuff from the remote past). Weirdly enough, I also second your advice to people to watch the series dubbed. Because as an Italian from Rome I'm sorry you might miss on the funniest part of it; the author, Michele Rech, aka Zerocalcare, dubbed almost all the characters himself and they all have a strong Roman accent verging into dialect, which works wonders for quirkiness, but gets lost in translation. So, although the dubbing has that slightly odd effect and can't really reproduce all the nuances of the original, having this British accent still gives the characters more of a local personality, more of an anchoring to real life, and that's the most important point with this series. The only thing I frown upon is that the BE dubbing is so child-friendly, I mean, there's a lot more profanity in the Roman language, and in this series as well, than you could tell from the BE version. But, well, can't have everything, I guess. And it still works.

Great review. What’s surprising in this series is neither the plot nor the characters: those were already part of zerocalcare’s comics universe. Rather His ability to transplant a comic, which has its own codes, paces and languages, into a video cartoon, a complete different medium: that was not granted at all. i loved watching this, since it comes from a country that shares a lot of simililarities with mine (una faccia, μια ρατσα). obviously most more subtle details are lost, but there are parts that really i could fully relate to, such as how each job requiring a contact otherwise you are already turned down. i also really related to the main character, since i also over analyze everything as if i am a godamn computer. and the scene around the fire is probably gonna be seared in my head for a while. it was so beautifully done.

I'm so happy this is having some audience even outside Italian borders! I think a lot of it gets lost, not only because of translation (the original is not even Italian, is Roman dialect and kind of extreme!) but because it tells the story of a fraction of a generation: if you were not born between '85 and '95 in Italy (and more specifically in Rome), there are good chances that the underling feeling of desperation/depression/anxiety he's trying to convey will not be perceived. He was capable of describing our generational failure in a completely new way, by laughing at it, yelling it out loud and finally accepting it. I've never felt more understood in life.

Does anyone know where I can get some of Zerocalcare's books in English (or German)? I'm having trouble finding many of them i online that are not in Italian and his comics seem very interesting. I enjoyed the show and would like to explore more of his works but I feel limited by the language barrier. If anyone here knows where I can find them please let me know.

Zerocalcare's fan club only lists English versions of "tentacles ath my throat", "forget my name" and "Kobane calling" (German only for Kobane calling). BAO publishing. From Wikipedia "On November 16th, Ablaze Publishing announced that they would be releasing English translations of Zerocalcare's first three graphic novels, The Armadillo Prophecy (2011), Tentacles At My Throat (2012) & Forget My Name (2014)". Tear along the dotted line is a modernized version of "the armadillo prophecy".

"the armadillo prophecy" is the first one he made, it's a little different from the others. the main story is interrupted by shorter comics that have nothing to do with it, it's even less cohesive than the series. the others are much more linear

It’s not easy to read subtitle of this series because Zerocalcare talk fast. I’m italian and 4-5 times I must to stop and repeat because I was not focused on the screen and I losted some quotes.

If you're curious, Zerocalcare is a comic artist, he has drawn many comics in the same style of the animation series (technically it's the animation series that got drawn in the style of the comics but you get the point) with the same type of mixture of gut-wrenching pieces of truth and creative humor. Worth a read.

Also, keep in mind that the author, ZeroCalcare, is a comic artist, and one of the most relevant italian graphic novel artists these days. Here in Italy his novels are well known. This small series is in fact a readaptation of one of his most famous books, "The Armadillo's prophecy".

In italian is actually not in italian, It's in Roman (accents, dialect). I am so happy they adepted this concepts (important also for the message in convoys) by using sort of slangs and dialects in English too!

I am Italian, I love Zerocalcare and I'm so happy for him and the staff behind this masterpiece cause they gained so much attention abroad - they deserve it. This animated series is simply a masterpiece: the content is so deep and emotional, and it is all a crescendo to the magnificent final episode. It doesn't matter if some romanesque expressions get lost in the translation: it is a pity but it doesn't detract from the profound themes pervading the whole series. In other words, the overall depth and beauty of the underlying message and spirit of the opera remains intact and is fully enjoyable even when dubbed. And that counts more than the romanesque expressions and hilarious content.

As an italian i have just one correction. The scene were we can see the tv with netflix shows in the background, those are film already existing but with titles that make fun of the original ones. Overall great video, thx for the review!

I'm italian and I also think if you don't speak Italian you should watch the dubbed version because they talk really fast, the pace of the story and animation is also very fast and I think it would be difficult to keep pace with the story while reading the subtitles

I really didn't think they could have nailed the english dubbing, the original version is in roman dialect so a lot of the terms (mostly swear words :'D ) and references are just lost in translation...but i've got to admit it, if you don't know a thing about italian, the english version might be the best coice (even though they could have done better, a great choice would have been a mix between scottish and english slang in my opinion). If you really liked the series, you should definitely get his graphic novels, they all have the same weird mix of comedy, pop culture references and gut punches, sadly i don't know if any of them has been published outside of Italy other than "Kobane calling" (his most serious work in which he describes his journey to Kurdistan).

Definitely watch it in English if the English dub is doing a good job at conveying a raw, ironic, slangy tone. Half of the "personality" of the series comes from the roman accent imo, so if the dub is managing some of that, any English speaker will enjoy that a lot more than the original VA :D

Being in an Italian dialect I think it makes it better for us rather that if it was correct Italian, so I'm guessing the same would be for English speaker if they can relate to a specific English dialect that can give back the same feelings.

It's true that Italians in general speak pretty fast, but I must say the guy (zerocalcare) takes it a step further. I'm from Rebibbia, the same area in Rome as him, and I struggle to follow him. Nevertheless great review! I loved the show too and I was wondering how it would be perceived outside of Italy.

I haven't watched the English dub as an Italian I watched the Italian dub. The Italian dub was in Roman dialect I think adapting it giving the characters a particular dialect was a great choice

From the moment I watched the first episode I wondered how Netflix would deal with dubbing and subtitles, if they even would try. I think choosing a gritty accent for the English dub was the amsrtest choice, as the roman dialect spoken in the series is very gritty and would lose all of its spontaneousness in a proper English. Most expressions used are also impossible to translate so I hope they did a good job with those!

in Italian, this show is in a very thick Roman accent so I think the British dubbing does a somehow good job in bringing back the feel of this type of accent, so if you do not know Italian you have a way better experience watching it in English.

Even because the original version, if im not mistake, is dubbed by Zerocalcare, the autor of the graphic novel and this animated series. Whatching it in any other language than Italian make you loose the vernacular, I don't think there is an analog for "li mortacci tua" in english

I think the dubbing choice was actually purposeful to keep the "spirit" of the original. The original is almost entirely spoken with a strong Roman accent - so it makes sense to go for a London equivalent to give an analogue feel.
