If you don't trust the reliability of diesel engines you haven't done enough research for this swap. Diesels, especially these older, simpler, emissions free ones, are the absolute best choice for this application.

@OccasionalBoss
@OccasionalBoss 3 жыл бұрын
Robert Wiersema lol yeah because you don’t operate a boat the same way as a car, you don’t rev a LS motor to damn near it’s max rpm for 3 hours straight but you can do that with a diesel. That LS motor will have to be pushed to its max and even then I won’t come close to the torque and reliably of a diesel motor

I am Team Diesel. They have less issues, and heartaches if you maintain it annually, and properly. Diesel Engines are like the dog that’s always loyal to you. You just have to stay on top of the maintenance schedule. I am currently a Diesel Mechanic trust me that they are worth the investment. You should have just bought a couple of wrecked Dodge Ram 3500HDs with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo-Diesel. You would have had a better power to weight ratio with twin inline 6s. Than you would have with the GM LSX engines. I love the GM Performance LS Motors but, the 6.7L Cummins I6 has way better Power, and Torque.

That’s his concern. He is going to lose a lot of money when he sells the boat if he buys expensive diesels. Gas engines are cheaper. But I agree, diesel is better. If only money wasn’t an option.

I am strongly against any pickup engine in an yacht, there is a reason why it’s 14L of engine, it’s to be able to run hard for hours like 90 to 100 percent hard. No truck engine can handle that stress. Smaller engines are capable of big power numbers but for a Very small amount of time.
@KuntalGhosh

and gas engines cant run at full power for that long .. a gas engine will die under 30min if u run at full load and open throttle ... lcos , boats and gensets use diesel cuz u can run them for really long time without any problem ... here in my country some trains travel a 1000km and one emd pulls them from start to end continuously running for 2 days and only stopping for refuel and 20min station stops.. try that with your petrol engine lol. ships travel from country to country for 30days or more and they run these engines close to their full speed and yet have little to no problems .. a day or two trip to the sea will kill those ls engines!

Average life of a marine application of an automotive engine is 750 hours, an outboard engine 1500 hours, Diesel engine 10,000 hours. You need an industrial engine, not a race car engine. A car can never put a load on an engine like pushing something heavy fast through the water. Good luck keeping good fuel in your tanks. Diesel fuel has a much better shelf life and has about 30% more heat value by volume. Chief Engineer Paul Haugan

The V903 engine has been in production in on form or another since the 1960s, so there are parts available. There are a number of parts on the engine that contain oil passages. The V903 is exclusively produced now for military application only now.

Hard to get parts? People in the comment sections doesn't agree with that. Going for a gas on a marine application just to save couple of grands uh.. The value of a boat will go down more than you "save" with this setup + the money spent on gas. LS swap interesting? Yeah right.. you still have some unfinished LS project. Diesels are not reliable? If so then why diesels are used where continuosly high torque is needed. "Engines are pretty heavy and they need space". Of course they are! Thats why the boat is actually working properly. You could've gone to the interesting way by repairing those diesels but you took the boring usual way which is LS. I really liked this boat series until now =S.

@Kentucky Hillboy Because he thinks he using his $$$ well because Texas Speed is providing the engines... He hasn't considered things like how do I add 3600lbs of fixed/static ballast in the same location as the engines were. Or how am I going to add enough fuel capacity to keep my range while still having the rest of the comforts of the boat. He hasn't thought about over the horizon reliability... because he thinks of it as a lake queen not a blue water capable vessel. Basically he's treating this like its no big deal if the engines fail because they were free, not thinking it could cost him and anyone on board their lives if they fail. He wants a play toy and this boat is not one. If he wants a play toy build something to blow the jet off Finnegan's jet boat, don't screw with a blue water craft this way. @Kentucky Hillboy I get it, I am neither a mechanic or engineer, but I am really interested the sciences behind how and why things work the way they do. Especially, when it comes to vehicles of any kind. My point really is that his decisions are going to backfire, cost him a boat load of money, and could kill someone. Do I know the answers. Not really other than the marine engineers / naval architects choose a pair of heavy ass diesels for some reason, and I can only infer from my research that they did so for many different reasons. The Original Comment lists them out pretty well. They are all things that B is for build will have to figure out handle and manage. Or he could have ordered the parts to repair it and done the over hauls either himself for youtube content or taken them to a diesel shop where they would have been ready to drop back into the boat probably within 2 weeks. Shops generally have some really good people to track down and get parts. So that's not really an excuse. I don't know what the cost of a rebuild would be on those engines but I would say it's probably less than the cost to make the modifications to have a pair of heavily tuned engines, and the associated changes to ballast, electrical, fuel, cooling and props.

Hmm... Love the channel and love watching you guys push your limits, and to be honest I got hooked on KZbin about a year ago partly based on this channel. I'm a fan, so it pains me to say this, but before LS swapping a yacht, how about you get the LS swapped Lamborghini drivable first? Hate to be so negative, but if you can't engineer an LS to be able to propel a Lamborghini at more than quarter throttle, how do you expect to make this work in a boat? Figure out all the things you didn't account for in that situation (like gearing to match the engine curve and tuning the engine to get the full potential out of it) and fix them, then take your new found knowledge and move on to new builds that push you further. I live by the rule of "If you're going to do it, then at least do it right." I'm starting to see this pattern where you try something cool, get it 90% done, put some lipstick on it, declare it done, then move on to the next project while the last one never really worked. It's a bit of a disappointment.

Wow, petrol in a boat will get about 0.5 mile (half a mile per gallon) a gallon or less, are you made of money? New larger fuel tanks and fuel system, new water cooling system to marínese them, will they run the props at the speed needed, so new gearboxes, weight problems, Balance problems for safety, (nose heavy is not an option for safe handling at sea) rating for the boat and insurability etc etc, you really need to take a good hard look at the comments here. Having said that, can you get an automatic gearbox with gears to change the rpm and also give you better economy?, that would be interesting. Worth looking into if you have gone mad with petrol ⛽️
@22099dscott
@22099dscott 3 жыл бұрын
He is going to have to either add ballast in the engine bay, or add the extra fuel tanks he will need. The diesels likely ran under 2k rpm at cruise speed, gas engines will never produce the required torque to be able to match fuel usage. In simple terms, the diesels are near double the displacement of the gas engines, but the gas engines will be running at least 2x the rpm if not more. Diesel has a higher BTU content over gasoline (137000 btu/gal compared to 116000 btu/gal). The boats hull is not just drawn on a piece of paper till it looks pretty, then that shape used, the weight distribution is considered. Without matching the existing weight distribution, the new gas engine boat will not sit right or rise out of the water at speed correctly. Props are a science unto themselves.

I've been watching quite a few boat builds, restorations, refits (mostly sail). One big thing that has been a constant in every one has been whatever task you undertake regarding a boat the estimated time frame you would give for that task for a non boat needs to be double, tripled or more when applied to a boat.

Ballast I know I said this last time. The lighter engine means less ballast. Do your research on how much ballast/weight is needed to keep the boat upright. You don’t want to be in light waves and all the sudden the boat capsizes. You might have to add lead or something in the bottom of the hull.

Yup, he never had any intention of repairing the diesels other than of morbid curiosity of seeing what failed. He could have easily found the parts or found a proper marine engine repair shop that would allow him to film the rebuild process. He’s doing this because the TSP engines are free and it’s KZbin algorithm friendly, the boat will never work properly and hurt the channel in the long run as just another project that’s not finished or working right. Much like the LS Lamborghini.

He could, even without just the switch will cost more then fixing the old engines. He hasn't figured out he will have to redesgin the boat due to new engines/gas tanks (since he can use the old ones) all the supporting mods. /it will be like the lambo with two gas engines on temp 5 gallon tanks for a quick speed lap with the boat (25% done but pretending it is nearly done) just to upload a video and pretend it is done and move on. Honestly, he lost his ass on the boat and is scared of admitting his 30k saving he sunk into that boat is gone and will have to pay 5k more just to hual/dump it. However, he should admit it and move onto the powerboat, much more realistic for his small brain and ls engine idea.

"Diesels are unreliable", said no one ever. There's a reason why the some of the most in-demand engines are the 5.9L cummins, and it ain't because their unreliable, it's because they're the definition of reliable. A million miles?? No problem on a diesel, but rare on a gasoline engine. Diesels run cooler, are less complex, and more robust for prolonged max-load applications
