Brilliant video. Jamie, good work on the video editing and the job itself. Becky, kudos for jumping in with a hand down the pipe. Incredible view from that back yard. Super-nice customer too. Here in Minnesota people call it 'drive manual' or 'drive stick' interchangeably. What weirds me out about roadways in the UK is how common it is for there to be tall hedges and buildings less than a foot from the road. I suppose many of those roads existed a couple hundred years before the American colonies rebelled. Take care.
@Elbows-Deep5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your brilliant comment Arty, Becky loves getting involved, Hates standing around for sure. Yes most if not all roads have hedges to the sides. I think its to screen off the road from whats on the other side and nature and also they help deaden the sound of the road and lower pollution. The houses being so close to the roads is mainly very old areas hundreds of years old, A lot of the UK is very historic, old and protected.

That was a mighty episode, half way through the lights came on and a woman was selling choc ices, Turkish Delight & cups of watered down orange calypso drinks, then just got back from the bog in time for the second half. Thanks for the show Jamie, and Becky, see, I don’t forget you Becky (flutters eyes & swoons 💚) Delightful stuff ✊

Most of us call it "stick shift" or just "stick" (the shifter resembles a stick coming out of the floor). Some of us call it manual. It just depends on how we were raised. As far as automatic transmissions, my grandparents told me that they mainly gained popularity because it was "so easy a woman could operate it." Of course, it also gave men a free hand for "other things."

Drive a stick, stick-shift, manual, or for us old peoples (Gen X and older) a standard transmission Then, you’d hear “3 on the tree”, which is a column shifter, instead of the floor. In Murica, we call manual transmissions Millennial Kryptonite

Manual in Canada is very rare. Even in commercial vans like the one I have its automatic. Our "big rigs" or "18 wheelers" are all stick shift. Some sports cars will be stick but otherwise the vast majority are automatic.

Bro, it's 105F here in my part of Arizona right now down 10 F from the norm. IT'S NOT HOT THERE!!! EVER!! Its driving a stick or manual, and I've never seen a manual stick in a van since the '60s. Smart huh?
@Elbows-Deep5 ай бұрын
its the humidity that makes it unbearable Jamie. 13% in Arizona vs 73% here, It literally sucks the life out of you. being such a small land mass with the ocean never more then a few hours away from anywhere in the country the Humidity is always high. I have a south African friend that suffers more here then we do lol its not just the heat its the combination. I think the science of it is, because the Humidity is so high out sweat dosnt evaporate so we are unable to cool down.

Made a lovely job of that repair Jamie and Becky, the pointing looks really neat!! After doing a bit of research on pitch fibre pipe (given that I have never heard of it before), turns out it was briefly used in the 60s as a cheaper and lighter alternative to clay, but was soon phased out by plastic. www.draindomain.com/pitch%20fibre.html
@Elbows-Deep5 ай бұрын
Yes, its a nightmare because it gets squashed over time and its too weak. i did hear somewhere it came about after WW2 as an alternate due to lack of materials or inflated prices as a cheaper solution, we quickly found it it was trash.
@_tmmy_5 ай бұрын
It’s like vulcanised rubber cable that a lot of similar aged properties were originally wired up in, it only lasted for a couple of decades before falling to pieces. While clay pipework does have its cons (i.e. root infiltration and fractures due to ground movement), the vast majority of it has done really well to last this long, especially as given that some of it will be nearly 200 years old! Once again really enjoyed the video Jamie, see you on the next one 👍🏻
