This song is a masterpiece, when it came out there were so many comparisons to The Beatles Sgt Pepper's Album in the way it was produced, with the harmony's, trumpet's and overlaid vocals, their names are Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, Advice For The Young At Heart, Pale Shelter or Shout, if you haven't already heard them, great reaction

Some very of-the-time UK references here. I was 15 in 1989 when this came out and just starting to become aware of politics. "Politician granny with your high ideals, have you no idea of how the majority feels?" is a reference to the then UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher - it proved prophetic as she was outed from power a year later ... "Food goes to waste, so nice to eat, so nice to taste" is a reference to the EEC (forerunner of the EU) butter mountains and milk lakes which were making headlines at the time, and seemed obscene in the light of recent famines in Africa. "Kick out the style, bring back the jam" was a reference to UK mod legend Paul Weller's band The Style Council, which was a very different style to his earlier band The Jam and seemed to reflect 80s slick excess and materialistic attitude much more (at least as far as their image went) and perhaps seemed a far cry from the raw and relateable late 70s/early 80s sound of The Jam. TFF seemed to be communicating their disapproval of their colleague's reinvention of himself and were suggesting he go back to his 'Jam' roots! :)

Great song done in the spirit of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles which was released on 26th of May 1967. The Beatles had brought the values of the counterculture into the mainstream. By breaking traditional rules about what a “rock album” should be, Sgt. Pepper gave other musicians new ideas and new attitudes to the approach of music. The production of the record also set new standards in expertise and innovation. Thanks for the reaction. Great job!

This song is a comment about the political climate in the 1980's under Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives in the UK. Politician granny with your high ideals Have you no idea how the majority feels? So without love and a promised land We're fools to the rules of a government plan Kick out the style, bring back the jam About Thatcher: she advocated monetarism, controlling the money supply with high interest rates, to tame inflation without resorting to union-negotiated pay policies. Her battle against inflation led to mass unemployment, but despite that she managed to win a second general election. Low taxation was a key area where Thatcherism was applied. Under the previous Labour government, there had been high levels of income tax for high-earners, but Thatcher progressively cut income tax - the basic rate of tax fell to 25%, while the higher rate was slashed from 83% to 40%. There was a shift away from direct taxation to indirect, for example by increasing VAT from 8% to 15%. Thatcher introduced privatisation of state-owned industries, including British Telecom, British Gas, British Airways and electricity companies, putting them back into private hands. There was also a huge sale to tenants of council housing. The government also abandoned its commitment to full employment, stating this was the responsibility of employers and employees. One example of her impact on society was the inclusion of Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988. The controversial clause stated that a local authority shall not "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

Wow. I’ve been listening to a LOT of reaction videos these last few years, but this song, more than any other I think, struck me as more different than my memory of it from the past than any other song, if that makes sense. So much complexity, bordering on chaos, is what I hear now, where my memory did not “carry” all that- I remembered the two parts, the rapid spoken pert, and the chorus melody, but the rest felt so new and surprising. That’s such a strange experience.. thanks, Angela, good reaction/analysis. Mind-blowing. Great!!
@KozmikZootz

You know, I think I may get what you're saying... Correct me if I missed your point, but, yeah, it felt so much more "singular" in memory. It's more a cohesive song the way I recall it when I was 13 years old and it was big on radio than it actually is to me listening again right now. I have to wonder why. Is it because we're watching someone react & sometimes deconstruct parts of it, or is it the introduction to our own, discreet memories about it because we're sharing it with many, many other people, but in both an anonymous, but very direct discussion now? I mean, if it came on the radio, even though I owned the album (I think we all did!) in the 80s, it was more or less random when I'd hear it play, but for this video, we all came here specifically *FOR* it, at the very moment we chose.

I've always felt that Roland and Curt were in their hearts studio musicians and didn't aim for top-40 -- because they employed so many things in the studio. When they were first underway as a duo, they presented some recordings to their producer. One of their songs was "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." He listened and then pronounced, "That's a single." They were aghast; they never imagined it was top-40 material. But it was released as such -- and shot to the top of the charts. Angela, if you'd like to rock out, hear their "Mothers Talk."
