Things I loved: 1. Fact that it was done in Blender 2. That people funded the project through donations 3. That all the goodies required for making the film are now free for everyone to use in Blender (Uh, wow!) 4. The artistry and time that went into making it (animators, videographers, editors, sound engineers) 5. The coding miracles that were added to handle the motion tracking bits, and indeed everything that went into blender (everyone who has ever added code to Blender) 6. The actors, script writers, etc. and the effort that went into doing it in English, even though it was filmed in Amsterdam. 7. The tension in this whole scene starting here: 6:23 Things I didn't love so much: 1. The fact that was done in English, instead of in Dutch (I prefer subtitles and authentic Dutch to carry the emotions and flavour of the scene better, as a personal preference) 2. Screaming "Nooooooooooo!" at a giant virtual button. 6:14 3. Automatic machine guns with no recoil 7:15 4. Delicate looking energy weapons with LOTS of recoil (though I found the lego-like appearance of them somewhat endearing, and would totally buy one for my desk). 5. The line "You know, there's a lesson to be learned from this." 9:18 6. Stabbing the huge killer droid in the eye with a broadsword (apparently that hurts it a lot) 9:30 7. The fact that the droids still seem to be attacking/ destroying things when the conflict has been resolved. Is it too late? What's going on here? 8. People who are perhaps a bit overly critical of small productions like this. *looks at self in the mirror, and hopes to one day produce something a fraction as good as Tears of Steel*

+C Rogers Yep, people need to keep perspective when they criticize. What we all tend to do is to compare to the next best thing; in other words, if this was any better, it would be compared to frickin' Star wars. Which also gets criticized, by people who just love to criticize -

What's everyone saying it didn't make sense? It makes complete sense: She is the roboticist and he went to space and left her behind. It broke her heart so she made killer robots that are presently destroying the world. He outlived her thanks to special relativity and she transferred her memories into the giant robot before she biologically died and the scientists/engineers are attempting to alter her memories to "change the past" to a different outcome where she doesn't want to destroy the world anymore. They've tried a bunch of different possibilities and all failed up until the final moment when he says he is sorry. At that point she is not really in control of the destruction anymore but at least she will not add to it. In the end, the solider is shown to have defeated the giant killer robot dogs and it's all thanks to the juicebox, buy one and drink it to become like him. ;)

I haven't actually watched all the Blender Open Movies before, but now that I'm caught up with them, I'm surprised at the great visual quality and nice production that goes into them. Of course the technical visual effects that goes into each movie is impressive, but the story, sound and music, and other general production that goes into them is also amazing. I'm glad that Blender is working on their Open Movies with great short films, and also the hard work and funding pitched in to make the films happen.

We are so used to watch movies where each shot is endlessly repeated before a perfect angle action expression light condition... are achieved. Under a normal filming circumstances, you cannot achieve that perfection, as nobody has that much money. For a free project, free of millions of dollars as well, this is an excellent and admirable product. It does what it says, illustrate what you can do in Blender.

The plot is guy dumps emotionally unstable girl and she turns into an abuse violent (if she already wasnt while they were dating) ex that is now a machine so they override her memory of the break up to bring peace to the world not that it seems to work as they keep fighting. A virus to kill her would've been better and more fitting than seeking her forgiveness. She is the villain afterall. I think the writers meant for it to be emotional or poignant but it just just stupid and cliched which almost ruins the real point of the film that is to show the amazing capabilities of blender.

max deem Yes the world should have been fixed due to the memory override. The robots should have stopped and Celia should have control to tell them to stand down. The comment I was replying to stated that the whole scene of the movie had nothing to do with the crumbling world around them. If this is the creators intention then it is a stupid one. What is the point of the time and effort of so many people just to fix the memory inside of a Robot. The whole idea that Celia wasn't connected to the outside world makes little sense, because then there would be no point of the scene existing.

Short version: 1. Tom and Celia break up. He becomes an astronaut and she becomes a roboticist. 2. Harbouring bitterness about the breakup Celia creates robots and either uploads herself into them or at least programs them with her memories. Motivated by her bitterness against humanity, they start rampaging and by 40 years later have humanity on the ropes. 3. In desperation, some people capture a robot and attempt to overwrite its memory of the breakup to a new, more positive one (recording it holographically with Tom reprising his original role). Robots attack during the attempt and the humans fight to hold them off. 4. Tom manages to reach what's left of Celia in the robot by saying he's sorry and (in a nutshell) that they can't change the past but they can change the future. This works but unfortunately only seems to affect the one robot and doesn't spread to any of the others. The battle continues. 6. Awesome juice-box guy is the sole survivor of the battle.

i dont think the acting is that bad, ive seen worse, just the scrip could have more work to take the acting from straight text to the deeper subtext, the story makes some sense but fear it has no resolution

I'm not sure exactly what they were going for with the acting. Like, a lot of it is serious, but it's hard to believe that moments like the Big No at 6:20 wasn't deliberate cheese. It's like it seamlessly switches between a serious SF short film and a parody of the exact same SF short film. :/

I don't understand the plot very well. From what I know, this Tom guy used to be an astronaut, but he abandoned his girlfriend with a robotic arm, somehow causing robots all over to take over, and this group of people are trying to rewrite the memory in Celia(?)'s brain, but how will that stop the robots? I'm confused.

***** but how? besides, after they changed the memory to be "good" why did the robots keep attacking?

I think the movie was good overall, but some of the supporting cast's expressions and acting was poor and took me out of the story. Like the shouting "Noooo" when the play button failed. Or the over exageration of the guy grabbing the transforming gun to fight the robots as they were getting ready to attack. Also, some of the visual choices made it feel kid like. For instance, the giant "Play" button. And the "Just admit you're freaked out by my robot hand." line seems kid like. We could see that the hand was robotic so there was no need to point out that the hand is robotic. I also don't think that a robotic hand would freak anybody out in general. If the hand was something she got as a "upgrade" and was not the result of injury, then his feelings about it would make more sense. Because his negativity toward it would have to do more with her technosapien belief and not the robotics itself. Deus Ex Human Revolution is one story that better expresses the conflict of ideals in this area. The other thing that, in my opinion of course, hurt the film is the robots themselves. There design looks great with the exception of the head. The head makes me think of a cartoon like robot Muppet. And the animation for them was off. It felt very much like stop motion and they didn't seem to move like they had weight to them. But, still amazing work on integrating human actors with CG using Blender!

If a goal was specifically to make a "compelling sci-fi film in Amsterdam," why have the characters speak English? Especially with poor American accents? People need to get over this English obsession and make things in their own language! Other than that, this was a brilliant short film.

Patrick Thompson My point was about using American accents instead of proper English. Since you brought it up, though, the accents aren't really "fine," most of them still sound very Dutch.
@bishopknight-sm
@bishopknight-sm 10 жыл бұрын
Ryan Hayle So, what's wrong with a Dutch accent? I'm American and I like to hear other accents. It adds character and uniqueness. As long as the English is clear and understandable, I'm ok with accents.
@DAW1968
@DAW1968 10 жыл бұрын
Ryan Hayle "most of them still sound very Dutch" Errrm... that's because they are. They're not trying to do 'American' accents, they're just speaking English. That's how the majority of Dutch people sound when speaking English, which I might add, they do as well as most English do as it's almost their second language. I don't think I've ever come across a Dutch person who didn't speak English faultlessly. And they probably made this in English as English is an international language so appeals to a wider audience, maximising the film and the programmes appeal.
@hackel137
@hackel137 10 жыл бұрын
I just think it's pathetic that English is taking over everything and people are marginalising their national identities. Just look at all the crappy pop music, hell half the Eurovision is in English these days. And catering to Americans is even worse.

All these fine Blender short films are prime examples of what small teams of Special FX creative geniuses can do, but they all suffer from the blaring facts that nobody is willing to bring in a writer. It's always wingit writing and it shows! Everytime! You can get away with minimal actors, but you just can't skip a writer.

I feel bad the people in the comments are so critic, like I was about to be, it's laughable in 2021 but 8 years ago this is at level with all standards and the comments didn't know.
