James Blunt sang this to his Dad in this video when he was actually dying from Kidney failure. Fortunately his Dad received a transplant after this video was made. So yes, James was genuinely crying!

1) It is his father 2) This was the 1st time his Father heard the song, performed in 1 take refusing autotune to ensure emotions were real. 3) His Father had donated a kidney years prior, and was currently experiencing kidney failure on his remaining kidney and was not expected to live w/o a transplant. 4) After the video was published, many people, to include a distant cousin were tested to see if they were suitable doners; which this cousin was. Allowing James' Father to receive a transplant and survive this battle.

Actually James didn’t do it in one take. James admitted so himself, that nodding his father does near the end he started doing by the 5th take. On James Blunt’s KZbin channel he reviews and comments on some of his music videos & talks about what he was thinking about when he wrote the song he’s reviewing, what the meaning behind the song is, the difficulties they had in the production & so forth

This song is so important to me because it reminds me to say to the people I love, the things I want them to know and believe they need to hear, while I still can!

I love this song. My dad passed in 2014 and this song and reactions to it helps me heal and feel less alone in the pain. You said that you like sad songs but you don't know why. I am the same but have (a few lol) extra years of experience and what I have learned is that song that make us feel this strongly remind us of the things that are important in life and the best part of living is love and without pain there is no joy.

First time listening to him was you're beautiful. A song about loss, depression and suicide (Depicted in the video), then another about loss, was Goodbye my lover, this one, 2 about war, I'll bring you home and No bravery then about loss again in The girl that never was. Even though they all depicts sadness, I love to listen to them. Maybe I'm crazy but I like it and also like to listen to Lewis Capaldi.

His father was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease - and had already donated one kidney! No suitable donor could be found, and the outlook was bleak. Hence this emotional farewell song. His father was a senior army officer, and when James went off to active service Kosovo as a Captain in the Household Cavalry, "just two grown men saying goodbye" was a very British "emotions hidden" parting message. All filmed in one raw, emotional take that reduced everybody in that room to tears - except his father, who ended up asking ""Why are you all crying? I'm not dead yet!" Thanks to this song, it found a donor and the story had a happy ending.
