I think he just wanted to chase that wanderer, implying from the conversation in chap 8-1, MC said that he swam to the whirlpool (which we can saw in chap 7-11, the shining teleport-liked thing behind Rafayel) so that means he didn't let MC drown intentionally. So just in case that he actually go after the wanderer, he may find the other way to get MC out of the water while he go chasing it (like ordering the fishes to help MC) or maybe he can get rid of the wanderer so quickly and come back to save MC in time because he seems so sure that MC will be safe even he go chasing the wanderer. And the "Don't go" that MC said doesn't sound that she didn't want him to leave and let her drown, it seems more like she didn't want him to go after the wanderer into the whirlpool since she considered it as a deadtrap. Thats why he said it's MC's choice (not to chase the wanderer) in the end. And from his personality and their backstory, I don't think that he wants MC to die. But this is just from my understanding, it could be wrong tho since theres only 8 chapters right now😂
