Cool review Rob. I bought an MX5 Headrush 6 months ago to ditch my amp permanently and go direct in my wedding band and the thing breaks my heart. Way too many options and it sounds awful, most of us need 3 sounds and a boost. So I got the Fly Rig Cali this week to keep it way simpler and I'm so much happier, it sounds great direct and so much simpler. The new V2 version is even better but just missing a send and return so you can add modulation FX, which the standard V2 Fly Rig has, as not sure if the new version has cab sim from the jack out now as the XLR takes care of that.

Hey Tone Ranger. (I bloody love that username) so this whole subject matter is a very interesting one. I actually ended up selling this and the Headrush Gigboard that I have tried and not because of any problems with the sounds on either. I have just found that I don’t want to change my effects and switching system at all. I just want to be able to go direct in certain circumstances. I also want something analog if possible. So I decided to go for the KOCH 63 OD. It’s a tube preamp pedal (that is almost the size of amp!) but it’s really well featured and I run the KOCH studiotone 20 head direct at home for all my videos so I am very accustomed to the sound. It has pre and post effects loops too allowing you to place it perfectly in the effects chain and it has 2 channels and a boost. It also has an XLR out and a dry out with no cab sim. Everything you need to replace an amp and it’s tube powered and analog. So basically I can run this with my MS3 pedalboard the exactly the way I did with my amp and no switching or effects change at all. That’s the desired outcome for me.
