Oh well, the stupidity of it all was this, I knew what hip-hop was but it was only on mainstream and I do have an issue with mainstream media (its not even worth bringing up, because I am sure everyone who read that, their eyes rolled back into their heads) but it was my first experience with some real underground, freaking amazing art form, and thats what what REAL rap is its an art from unlike any other. I was a "metal-head" particularly the bands coming out of Finland, its how I found a video that TM hadn't seen before, but then I had my eyes opened and I found Vinnie Paz, Immortal Technique, Necro, Jedi Mind Tricks, R.A The Rugged Man and I'm in Australia, some some of these artists came and went and I did miss them, but on a few rare occasions I got to photograph some, Ice Cube was one who's also in my portfolio. But having my eyes opened like that, was an awakening I'd been asleep for a very long time.

I was 12 yrs old when I first came across an “unknown underground hip hop artist" that was hated by BET for “being too rock n roll" and was shunned by MTV for being “Too Morbid" No label would touch this artist.(other than a few independent rip off labels) He signed to them, pushed his product but they never helped him or held up their end. He became frustrated and decided “To make his own personal Independent label" Everyone he told thought he was insane. “You can't take on the Industry" many said. “Fuck the Industry" he replied. For the next decade he hammered away at shows, mastering his craft, and selling albums.He poured his heart and soul blood and tears into all of his work. The first few shows had only 50-100 (most of whom were not a fan, but many left as one) 50 turned into 500 and 500 soon turned into 5000. As of 2020 (almost 20 years later) this artist has sold out stadiums. He's made Forbes list at least twice. He has been sponsored by Monster Energy and other big companies. To this day, he remains one of best artists of all time. Tech N9ne is the definition of the American Dream and an Inspiration to ALL. I'm grateful I got to be “along for the ride" I remember a time when they would say “tech who?” and “I like that band" Go to any music venue today or city and you will find he's well known and well respected. That young man is blessed to have such a mentor.
