thanks, this is a really great demonstration. i was worried for a moment at the end that the vapours spraying out of the lid was gonna reach their auto ignition point too, but that'd be what the gloves are for.

thanks a lot for the clear and visual explanation. I looked so many sources but none brought explanation so neatly

Wow! This was extremely educational! I learned a rude lesson today about the flashpoint of cooking oils. I bought a new cast iron skillet and read online that to cook a steak on it the stove should be set as high as possible for a few minutes then add oil and the steak. Like a dummy I followed instructions and instantly I had a fire similar to yours on my stove. I was able to throw out the skillet on a foot of snow outside and put out the fire but it was very scary to say the least. I'm going to rethink this idea and look for a safer way to fry a steak until I'm able to grill again. Thanks!!

May sound like a no-brainer, but I just learned the hard way that an induction hob will heat carbon steel hot enough to auto-ignite vegetable oil....

Wow you killed the flame and it just ignites and flashes just like that

I wonder what the temperature of the oil that self ignites is? Rule of Thumb: Don't cook with gas and oil when you've been drinking.

dont think the open flame had any thing to do with auto ignition temp would like to know oil type and auto temp

@@scottboughton2699 says that the oil has to reach 700 degrees to combust like that. i had this happen to me with a cast iron pan on an electric range. i was cooking and i added some oil to the pan to get a nice sear but the pan was to hot. i was use to working with gas range. the oil hit the pan. started to smoke then burst into flames. i immediately grabbed the pan with a towel and threw it in the oven. was a close call and from that point on i learn that you have to be careful with the electric because the heat is harder to control

You can’t just put it out with an extinguisher, you have to let it cool down with the lid on

I saw that on school when you put a wet towel on the pan with fire it will disappear

this will only be useful for class A (solid fuel) fires. this is a class B fire, which is one that you do not wanna add water to. instead, you'll wanna use either a lid or a dedicated fire blanket.
