I did some volunteer work at a senior living facility. I met some of the nicest, most caring, kind, gentle elderly people possible. It infuriates me to know there are individuals who would take advantage of these folks even knowing their ages and vulnerabilities. Same here … after my sister and I moved our parents into assisted living a while back we’d be at the house to clear it out - the phone would ring and several times it was a scammer looking to connect to the computer to “refund” my Dad money. By that time the computer was out of the house, I told the scammer that and he didn’t know how to react. What I found out later was my Dad did get scammed a few times but there wasn’t anything like sending large sums of money from his bank accounts.

Honestly, I think it's just another tech support scam but they're using Family Tree Maker to get access to their victim instead of the classic Microsoft, PayPal, Amazon etc. Very odd choice for a scammer.

About the part of the scam where they run netstat to make the victim think there’s hackers on the computer - having seen scam bait videos showing this many times I’ve never seen anyone make the scammer demonstrate the hackers are gone by running netstat again - just wondering how the scammer would react to this request. The only time I’ve seen the netstat results challenged is with a Jim Browning video where he questions the results and of course the scammer is tongue tied and/or speechless.
