Tech Talk number 7: Pipeline Failure and Inspection

Osorio Goncalves from Rosen UK gives a talk titled “Structural Integrity and Pipelines - Failure is not an option". In this webinar, the main elements of structural integrity management for critical structures and equipment are presented. A special focus is given to pipelines where the main damage mechanisms and the strategies for detection, mitigation and avoidance of threats are presented.
Following a brief Q&A session, Dr Qing Wan From Durham University presents on “Structural Health Monitoring for Detecting Cracks in Oil Pipelines” This short talk introduces an impedance-based structural health monitoring method for detecting cracks in oil pipelines, to assess the properties of the materials without causing any damage to the materials in the process. The study looks at utilising piezoelectric properties of surface-bonded PZT transducer patches to measure and locate damage in oil pipelines.

Dr Qing Wang's presentation seemed interesting, but very hard to follow with the disconnect between talk and slides. It will be interesting how it can be applied in the real world, especially in relation to pipelines. Seems more of a manufacturing verification process.
