This Sony looks quite funky in the days it was manufactured, especially the front part, that looks similar in shape to my Panasonic SC-UA3 I own. Sorry that it is a little bit off the main topic here, however I also have a Sony CFD-S07CP that is virtually brand new... Again, a little bit off the main topic here. This is an excellent restoration project ! 😎 👍👌💯

It did look OK prior to being dismantled and cleaned up but then again, it may not have worked properly until the "restoration".

Capstan shaft should have sewing machine oil on it, NOT grease... Overall an excellent restoration... WELL DONE!!! 9/10

From my own experience you should never use sewing machine oil in any mechanical part of a tape deck; that's a big no-no. Being liquid, it runs everywhere and makes a mess (it may also dilute any factory grease already present -creating further problems). Always use light grease (not automotive or industrial grade) and only lubricate the outer bearing (the hole on the rear side of the mechanism) so when the capstan flywheel is back in place, it has something to rotate on that will reduce friction and noise. You don't need lots of lube for a tape deck repair - a tiny amount is sufficient in appropriate places to do a fair job. Most manufacturers lightly greased their decks; they didn't oil them.
