Widescreen? Ultra widescreen? Nah. 1:1 Square is where it's at for monitors. Check out this awesome monitor from EIZO.
Ironically, this video is best viewed on a 21:9 display at 1440P fullscreen.

The LG DualUp actually is similar, although a more modern option (higher resolution). It's not 1:1 but close (16:18). It's also quite a lot cheaper then the Eizo was, but then it doesn't come with their long warranty.

@@deathtaco4095yes, which is pretty close to 1:1. It's not 1:1, but the display and features are a huge step up over most 1:1 monitors. E.g. the resolution of 2560x2880 is a big jump already. That's higher than 4K in terms of pixels. And the nice thing about it is it fits two 16:9 outputs on top of each other. By far the best square-ish display that's available today. Unless you really need 1:1 for some reason then it's worth the benefits it has as a modern panel with good support. To most people though 4:3, 1:1, 5:4, and 8:9 are all close enough.

Its not up to monitor maker, its up to panel manufacturers - and only panels which cost less are which sell more. This square panel will be sold in very limited batches, so LCD factory will jack up the price. It's a miracle someone actually made this - since normally they just prefer "normal" things rather to take risks with something unusual.

As a cinematographer and editor, you learn that there is no one "correct" aspect ratio, and they all have their uses (and psychological effects). Photographers know this too. 16:9 looks nice when you're watching a movie or TV and 16:10 is close to the "golden ratio" (1:1.618), but what the industry forgot is that most of us rarely watch full-screen video on our computer screens - we use them to work with software! And the best way to lay out the interface should really dictate the aspect ratio. Found this when I realized my dual 16:10 24" setup could really use some extra height... too bad this is way out of my budget right now. :) But Eizo is a great, trustworthy company.

this looks awesome. for games, graphics drivers should be able to apply no scaling for full screen applications. that means you can change resolution and just have it center on screen, so you technically still have a 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 monitor. just a lot of black space. i do this with my 1920x1200 for 1080p games (or whatever resolution i like).

It's so annoying that hi dpi monitors now are 16:10 at best instead of 4:3. It means taking up more desk space when vertical space is what we need. With web pages still designed for 1920 width or less, why do I need more than 3800 pixels in width?

I'm seriously considering getting one of these, quick question. You mention in the video that the display supports 2048x2048, that struck me as odd since the monitor seems to have 1920x1920 everywhere on the eizo site so I checked the manual and, sure enough, it says 2048x2048 is supported but it mentions no caveats. The question is, is the actual panel 2048 and 1920 is just occupying less of the monitor, or is it being scaled? I really doubt it would be downscaling 2048 to 1920 (That would look awful?). Is there any real reason not to run it in this resolution? 1920 * 1920 = 3,686,400 2048 * 2048 = 4,194,304 That's a large difference in usable space. For additional consideration, 1920*1080 (the workhorse resolution) * 2 monitors only equals 4,147,200. Meaning at 2048 this display would be able to effectively replace two 1920*1080 monitors. Now I'm just looking for a decent way to get a percent off the price...
@TechDredge
@TechDredge 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how it works, I think it's scaled up. Native resolution is 1920p and when you take it up to 2048p it looks a little funny, but nothing unusable. I know EIZO's very high end Air Traffic monitors are native 2048*2048 so it might be something in there to preserve compatibility. I didn't ask cause this video was long enough as it is, but it was in my notes as a curiosity. At 1920*1920, you can replace 2 1920*1080 monitors. I replaced 4 with the one monitor! Pixel count isn't everything. As for price, I can buy it wholesale and it's not much cheaper than retail, so good luck! If you find a place that sells them cheap and used, let me know!

@@TechDredgeI just tried setting mine to 2048x2048, but then the contents of the screen is getting anti-aliased (probably what you call a 'little funny'). 1920x1920 is definately the native resolution, Windows recommends this setting, and everything looks nice and crisp in this resolution.

that because we have an eyes in horizontal line. Basically all animals have it this way. That's because, it is more imporant to see wider, for survival. We are used to it, to see more "width" from surrounding , that "height". It's because, you are much more likely attacked from behind, or from sides, than from above or from the ground. Mostly, in above is only sky, without danger, and under your, is usually only ground, but when you don't see animals similar size, on side, or behind, there is much likely bigger problem in nature.

"Negatives: There really aren't any" *proceeds to list negatives* Honestly, this monitor looks amazing for everything that isn't games or movies but FOV is extremely important in many competitive titles. And you have to agree that letterboxing sucks so you would need a second monitor for gaming. Despite this, the monitor looks great and very functional but it cannot do some tasks well and it does have its negatives.

@@jimpenjao594 Look at 8:30 in the video to see what a game looks like. The aspect ratio will usually cut things off the edge, though some games do show more on the vertical axes (which is not what they're designed to show). It will look weird, but it will work without distortion. Back in the day all monitors were closer to squares than rectangles, so all games will work. I'd recommend using DisplayFusion to split the monitor into a 1920*1080 and just playing on that. Or getting a second gaming monitor - it's really not the use case for this one.

At 2560*2560 I think it would be too dense. Same if it was physically smaller. At its current size, it's about the same pixel density as a 24" 1080p monitor which is about perfect for me - I find 24" 1440P to be unusable on Windows. They make air traffic control displays with native resolution of 2048*2048 and I wouldn't want to go much higher than that. It's also very useful because at this size you can preview a side by side A4 spread at 100% - something you couldn't do if the screen was smaller, and something that Windows scaling would probably screw up if resolution was higher. Wish I could get it for $1k, over twice that here.
@movax20h
@movax20h 8 жыл бұрын
+TechDredge 2048*2048 would be nice, but I am pretty sure it would be very expensive. I use dual 2560x1600 on 30 inch monitors right now, and I like the resolution, but they are little to big for me sometimes. If you put 1920 lines from to bottom, then it is actually more than this 30 inch high resolution monitor, so you are right, 24-25'' would be too dense. The pitch on my monitor is 0.2505mm, and this one is 0.25mm also. So that is ok. Still I think 1-2 inches smaller version with 1920x1920 would be nice. I just do not like to tilt head up too much. that is a pain with pivots on wide screens also.

@movax20h
@movax20h 8 жыл бұрын
+TechDredge Yes. I think I will get one, my current monitor is 642 mm x 400 mm visible area. EIZO is actually little less than 50cm, it is 475.7mm x 475.7mm visible area (or panel size). I think the height will not be a problem at all. I just noticed, that I just put my monitor high with about 20-25cm from the desk, so it is reasonably centered. That means, I could put EV2430Q just put it little lower, and still have it nicely centered. 2560x1600 = 4M pixels, 1920x1920 = 3.7M pixels. So I do not think I need more. Any how, a lot pixels in 16:9 and 16:10 is just not well utilized, so I think this 1920x1920 is a win.

Actually, this is better for retro games, because 1:1 would let you play portrait mode/vertical games like shmups just as well as horizontal/landscape games. This aspect ratio is PERFECT for retro games. Someone really fucking needs to make more of these with G-Sync and good response times.

i hate 16:9 monitors ,...No height ! the reasoning of 16:9 was stupid . No one sees as 16:9 . fools . Saw the 2.00 aspect screens in the store ,...what a joke . Square is the way ! ( Compatible with ALL aspect ratios ) . your particular model ,... 10 bit color and too pricE .

Look at the shape of your eye sockets (or anyone else's, really.) We naturally see wider than we see taller due to the shape of our eye sockets and the way our eye sits back in there. Notice how to the sides of your eyes the sockets have this slight "cutaway" whereas directly above your eyes you have this large forehead ridge blocking/obstructing more. This is a large reason why monitors moved in the widescreen direction (because the natural Field of Vision [or FoV] for a human being is wider than it is tall.) That said, I do prefer slightly taller 16:10 aspect ratio myself, so there's nothing wrong with still have subjective preferences in terms of what you enjoy using the most. Taste is still ultimately subjective, even though it is an objective biological fact that we see wider than we see vertically.
