Even if the heat doesn't kill the equipment (fans) - it's the temperature swings which will fatigue the circuit boards/humidity/thermal expansion/contraction/etc - yes, there is a general ambient temperature the equipment will sustain, however I've seen this happen many times in my life. Then again, this guy seems like he can't leave things alone and will probably change equipment frequently, making my comment more or less invalid. All of this equipment should be inside the house in my opinion. He's put a lot of work into this, sad to see it in the attic.

Note to camera operator, too many movements, particularly when shooting Alex of the sofa facing the camera, the constant shifting left to right, right to left, distracts from what Alex is saying, maybe cut it down to 1 or 2 movements and stick with those positions.

Please do a video on how you get Internet in, like cable exchange or adsl, where it goes in your house and then what equipment that virgin media stuff is. Would be really cool
@Jcshh
@Jcshh 6 жыл бұрын
Leased line comes from the local BT exchange instead of the 21CN aggregation node, a fibre optic cable is fed up the wall to the loft in his house and routed through Virgin Medias routing gear (not sure of the kind of router it is though). Internet goes to Ubiquiti USG where it splits each customer into VLANS with a separate local IP address range per VLAN. Internet is sent via Ubiquiti's AirFibre gear, (dishes on the roof) to each customer premises to a dish on their property where it is then routed through another USG or Edgerouter at the customers end, local IP connects to core network and then customers can do with the connection as they please.

I would recommend picking up the Nano HD as those are Wave 2 Compliant.

Real network setups have a patchpanel that everything connects to and then you wire from that to the switch or wherever you need it. Its cheap going directly to a switch.. Its like taking an extension cord and running it inside a wall but not making it an installation.

A router mostly identical to a managed switch. Your typical ADSL2+ or VDSL router has a NAT but this is all Ethernet-based. No NAT requirement for PPPoE. The reason for having a router in each home is for localised DNS and having their own LAN. You both seem to not understand how the Internet works. IP addresses can be virtually assigned to any port on a switch. I have a single fibre entering my home with 15 public IP addresses. From the router, I connect into the edge of the core network via a 10 Gbps Ethernet switch (at Gbps speeds) which has four IPv4 and four IPv6 addresses for its redundant links going further into the core network. The Internet is made up of managed switches and gateways for translating between ancient networks.

It's modern insulation, the house is newly built- it definitely will not use asbestos. In addition, a misconception this is not a server rack, nor are there servers. This is a network rack, with two network appliances- a gateway firewall/router and a small switch- these are not high power, nor will they get too hot. Rack equipment, good rack equipment at-least can handle a fair amount of heat due to the environments there made for. (It may effect the longevity of the gear, if kept in the wrong climate however is definitely safe.)

Ash Finkler I agree. I store my sensitive electronics in the hottest part of house and even prefer to hook them up outside in the direct sunlight over the noon hour just so they can breath nice warm fresh air.

its not a server despite alex saying it is. its just networking gear, he will have a dust problem down the line for sure but my networking equipment and actual servers are in my loft, I just have a 120mm fan and extractor going outside through air vents.

Network rack in the loft? You are just asking for heat and dust problems, not to mention access issues.

Hey Alex, question for you. I'm looking to upgrade my network to some Ubiquiti gear and I'm confused about the Edgerouter setups versus the Unifi setup. I've got a couple gaming PC's, consoles, and I want to attach some access points and cameras from ubiquiti later on. Where should I start with my setup?

Play uk & Hello _ I just bought my first 2 EdgeRouterX and soon some APs.I have found much help in tuber Crosstalk Solutions channel for detailed setup. I think he has been the most helpful in learning setups. Alex made me aware of ubiqity with the relentless fandboy Hype, and I had to search elsewhere to find How To information. I hope that helps.

Get some of the AP's if you don't have signal throughout the whole house. If you have a big network e.g a lot lf computers phones ect. Connected.. Then yeh definitely. It can help with managing the network.

I'm thinking of buying a couple of mesh points as I already have 3 normal aps other than of course than main wlan router so I am getting bored of just switching between 4 different networks although they actually have great range on both 2.4 and 5 GHz, so what's your opinion about their mesh acsses points alex
