Sometimes for computational purposes, it may be necessary to consider signed zeros, that is, treating +0 and −0 as two different numbers. One may think of this a capturing the different divergent behaviour of 1/x as x→0 from the left and from the right. Since they were doing a computer simulation of the trajectory of a bullet, we can only really blame them for sloppy editing.

@@zm1786 The popular scientists on the TV show, Mythbusters experimented with the premise that “Bullets fired into the air maintain their lethal capability when they eventually fall back down.” They found that a bullet fired straight up (an almost impossible achievement for a human), will tumble on its return trip and falls at a slower rate due to terminal velocity. In addition, they found that a bullet in this circumstance is therefore less lethal on impact. However, they also discovered that a bullet fired at a non-vertical angle will be able to maintain its speed enough to be very destructive on impact. In determining if the myth was ‘Busted’, ‘Plausible’ or ‘Confirmed’, they proposed that this myth would receive all three ratings at the same time.

Please retake physics 101. The bullet won't be stabilized as it falls back, therefore the air resistance will have a much more substantial impact on the bullet, causing it never to reach leathal velocity. Unless it's a super heavy bullet, slugs or shell.

Most rifle and some hand gun rounds travle over the sound barrier, so the bullet will hit its target before the sound of the shot is heard. You still want to drop and take cover but hearing the pops off in the distance is better than hearing the wistling and cracking sound the bullets make as they fly past your head or hit the ground around you or hit you.

Sorry guys you missed something HUGE -- As the bullet slows it starts to tumble. As it starts to fall - between its own tumbling and the wind it begins to tumble - twist - and corkscrew down - That takes a lot of the momentum away. A bullet is far more dangerous when it is fired up in the air at a slight arch.

The maximum or terminal velocity a bullet will attain falling from its peak altitude depends greatly the shape of the bullet. A rifle bullet with it higher ballistic coefficient will attain a higher velocity than a pistol bullet. A rifle bullet in the .270 to .30 caliber range seems to have the best long range potential. But in any case firing a bullet vertically is a bad idea and dangerous.

@giannistefanoli6612
@giannistefanoli6612 7 жыл бұрын
1673601 You dumbshits, there's something called terminal speed that's caused due to the air resistance. A bullet would never reach its original speed if it's fired with a 90 degrees angle. A bullet's size is too small, and gravity itself couldn't make it put up with the mentioned resistance. So, a part of the kinetic energy would be greatly lost. A falcon is what you would call "aerodynamic", its terminal speed if it begun descending at the same height with the bullet, is going to be greater straightaway. The bigger the object, the more acceleration it can get advantage of.

They covered this one very well in an episode of the “Mythbusters”. If fired straight up, the bullets come back down at their terminal velocity which is going to be somewhere in the 150 feet per second neighborhood. That is not fast enough to do any significant damage, unless you are talking about bullets far larger than any ‘normal’ rifle or pistol fires. The very deadly problem is, if you fire with the barrel at something less than directly vertical. Fired at say, 45 degrees above the horizon, the bullet can maintain much of its muzzle velocity (initially anywhere from 1000 fps to 4000 fps) and end up half a mile or more away coming in at a 20 or 30 degree angle while retaining more than enough velocity to be lethal. That is why,in most places, it is illegal to fire a gun in the air. It is also very very dangerous. That is also why one of the main rules of gun safety is “Know your target AND what is behind it before you shoot.”

Yes, accounting for air resistance, the bullet would stop accelerating at terminal velocity and would reach maybe half that speed or less, but why are you trying to act smart by quoting the value of Earth's acceleration due to gravity when it does nothing to disprove the video?

If the bullet was shot straight up, it would lose most of it's ballistic qualities and falling at terminal velocity isn't going to be enough to really kill anyone. Keep in mind these bullets when fired are normally going at mach 1+ speeds (depending on the caliber). However with celabertory gun fire and what not, people don't always shoot them straight up but at a angle. If the bullet doesn't slow completely down at the top of it's arc but retains more of that in horizontal movement, it could still be traveling faster then terminal velocity when it returns to the ground. I think it's those that are what causes injuries. A bullet probably doesn't weigh much more then like 5 or 10 pennies (though I may be grossly over estimating the weight. Especially for hand gun calibers perhaps) and we already know the myth about a penny being dropped off the empire state building being able to hurt anyone. The mythbusters quashed that one long ago. :P . A small piece of metal falling at terminal velocity probably won't do much damage either. Especially if it starts tumbling which would occur if it was shot straight up. If it was shot through a rifled barrel it may fall with the pointed end remaining pointed up if it has enough rotational energy left in it. That would increase air resistance and slow it down further. :P

@MagnumForce51
@MagnumForce51 7 жыл бұрын
If it's still going faster then terminal velocity when it started falling. However if it did slow down, then no it would not go faster then terminal velocity as that is impossible. It would have to have some form of external source of energy to accelerate it faster then what gravity of the Earth provides and we all know most bullets don't have little rocket engines attached to them. :P In fact air resistance means that most objects don't actually reach terminal velocity most of the time due to drag. Bullets may get closer to that if they are still on a ballestic trajectory and more so if they are still rotating (that only applies if the gun had a rifled barrel though). If the bullet had started tumbling air drag is higher so it would slow down more. True terminal velocity isn't reached unless the object is falling in a vacuum. So the bullet had to have made it into space. :P (and it would slow down once it hit the atmosphere anyways. :P )

How can the bullet achieve a downward speed of 400 MPH when terminal velocity is 122 MPH? Theoretically it could achieve 400 MPH but the altitude would have to be much higher than a 2 mile straight drop. Having more of an arc in the parabola would make the bullet descend faster but if we're talking firing a bullet straight up, there's no way it would descend at 400 MPH.

0:51 Wrong Calculation Tech Insider: Let's do a quick maths( I am assuming there is no wind or resistance to stop the bullet) Initial Velocity, u= 0 m/s Height, h= 2 mile = 3.21 km = 3210 m Acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.8 m/s^2 Final velocity, v = ? Formula: v^2= u^2 + 2as ( u^2 = u * u, i.e example:- 3^2 = 3*3 =9) Putting above values in formula, we get: v^2= 0^2 + 2 * 9.8 * 3210 v^2 = 62, 916 v= 250.8 m /s Hence , Final velocity of the bullet will be 250.8 m/s not 400 m/s.

I did this with my dad's compound bow when I was in high school. My dads bow had about a 75lbs pull weight so I was able to barely get it back. So I shot a practice arrow straight up in the air and only until after the release, I could not see where the arrow went! and let alone where it was going to land! So I ran about 200ft from where I was standing and after about 15-20 seconds, I hear a thump! The arrow happily landed 10 ft away from where I shot it. So shooting an arrow straight up is also a very very dumb trick. Words of wisdom, "Don't do it"

There is no correlation between the firing speed and the falling speed. Suppose the bullet reaches a height of 2 km = 2000 m. Then the max speed attained by it before it hits the ground is V = √(2.g.S) = √ (2 * 9.8 * 2000) = √ 39200 = 197 m/s = 709km/h = 440 mph (neglecting air resistance and projectile fall)

Because bullets aren't either. If you drop a bullet from the Empire State Building it wouldn't kill anyone either and it is plenty high to reach terminal velocity. A free falling bullet will be tumbling like crazy and loses all its aerodynamic properties causing it to fall relatively slow. People who died from "falling" bullets where hit by rounds fired at angles so they still had energy from the shot and where not truly free falling like they would if shot straight up. Go watch the mythbusters clip on the topic and you will see there 400 mph number for falling bullets is bullshit.
