It’s convenient for mobile mounting in sub compact cars but if anything happens to the mic/control head the radio is out of commission. The weakest link in any mobile rig is the mic cable. It can get stretched, kinked and pinched between the seat rails if the rig is poorly positioned. I’ve changed one of those mic cables myself.

What's the rejection like on the front end for intermod? Where I live POCSAG can be a nightmare for wiping out 2m on Direct Conversion based radios (I'm assuming this is direct conversion too) I've tried a couple of the Anytone 2m/70cm mobiles but their front ends are far too wide as they designed for all countries and just have soft frequency limits and no hardware filtering. This would be perfect to put in my YLs car and really tempted to get one.

Very interesting review. It might be ideal for my use case. Will this radio operate as a fixed frequency receiver without the Mic attached (using the External speaker output). I assume it has CTCSS decode/squeltch too? My use case is a receiver for the 2m ATV Calling channel, it will be used to feed audio into one of the sound channels of a DATV TV Repeater. Also, when it powers up will it return to the last used channel? DO you know what the RX current consumption is too?

I had one of these. When I tested the radio on a spectrum analyzer, the 2. harmonic on VHF (288MHz) was only 40dBc down from the carrier at 144MHz, so it did not meet EU-regulations. On UHF there was no problems measured. Perhaps I just got a dodgy radio, I haven't tested other samples.
@justanotherguy38503 жыл бұрын
It would not have enough audio in a noisy semi or if I have the windows down. 25 watts is not enough power either. It needs to be at least 50. I say this as someone who has used a Scanner Antenna with 5w HT when the car was in the shop and did just fine. It's just that when you get into the fringe areas of the repeater that extra 25 watts makes a difference.
@grigorirasputin50203 жыл бұрын
If it is at 50W, it would NEED a cooling fan, too. I get so tired of reading rubbish by manufacturers who say their radio doesn't need a fan because they have heat sinks. Absolutely not true. Even a 20-25 Watt radio can get quite hot during a lengthy QSO and should have a fan.
@justanotherguy38503 жыл бұрын
@@grigorirasputin5020 :: agreed. I've been a licensed ham for decades and own a series of repeaters that since I'm in California we have the benefit of high-altitude locations which increases the range of radios. But that same 25 W radio in states that are basically flat, like Texas, are not going to have the same coverage as a 50-watt radio. Although that would only be a 3db increase that 3db may make the difference. Those states that are basically flat, again like Texas, are already disadvantaged because they don't have much height above average terrain (HAAT) and most don't understand antenna technology well enough to know that they need to be running a 9db gain base station repeater antenna because of their low altitude. Those two negatives decrease the range of the operator and the repeater. I suspect you already know this but others reading this may not. I also have an issue with the fact that all the controls are on the microphone. Right now amateur radio operators in my state are given an exception to the no cell phone or radio use while driving a vehicle. Now if you're putting all of the controls into the microphone the operator is going to have to take his or her eyes off of the road to look at the microphone to make sure that they're pushing the right buttons. Those microphones as you know are not that big which means the buttons are small. I understand that vehicles are getting more and more compact with what they put in them giving limited space. I fully get it. But as a guy that likes an SUV with plenty of space between the seats, I run Motorola for everything. The main rigs are mounted in special compartments in the back of the vehicle. I'll confess that that gives me an edge because all of my radios or 110 watts each. That's getting off topic.
@InternetGoldMiner3 жыл бұрын
@@justanotherguy3850 Sucks to be in Ca. I go there and use my microphone on my hf rig all the time in the mobile and use my radar detector on the windshield. No issues. And if I did get stopped Id tell the cop this is a federal lisc and I will never pay the fine. Also hope you get a pet scan every year with that 110 watts out of that mobile because your rf exposure levels are off the charts.
@justanotherguy38503 жыл бұрын
@Internet Gold Miner :: your reply was all over the place. What's amusing that you're telling a police officer, actually retired now, that you wouldn't pay a citation if you were pulled over for using your radio. The citation would not be for using your radio. It would be for inattentive driving. Go back and read what I wrote again where I made reference to all the controls being on the microphone. That means you would have to take your eyes off of the road just as if you were texting to make sure that you were pressing the correct buttons. That's the issue. Inattentive driving. California does have an exemption for licensed Communications operators or those using two-way radio for example for employment reasons. As far as radar, who said anything about radar? It's not unlawful to have a radar detector in California. Lastly as far as RF exposure, you get more RF exposure from a cell phone held up to your ear at 3 watts and 2.4 GHz then you do with a antenna on the trunk of your car. Kind of a rambling wacky message. It feels like you were hunting for things to b**** about when in reality they made absolutely no sense.

I wonder if any of the mobile rig designers ever used their own designs in a vehicle. Is a separate front panel, that can be attached to the dashboard really that difficult? Yes, these transceivers are very small, they could be installed almost anywhere - could, if there wasn't the antenna cable. Yes, there is a remote control microphone, that I can hold in my hand like in the 70s. But I'm pretty sure the manufacturer will again not publish the communication protocol between microphone and transceiver. Having to enter frequencies and ctcss settings into that microphone while driving is exactly how different from someone texting on a phone while driving? All I need while driving is a toggle button between memory and vfo as well as a dial, a volume/squelch knob and a PTT switch where it's convenient to be reached. But all that is unfashionable now...

@zoolkhan3 жыл бұрын
@@TechMindsOfficial but legal it is not. pmr is quite power restricted by law (Maximum allowed power is 500mW EIRP) , and this radio puts out too much even in its lowest setting. And probably too wide too. stop promoting these radios to the clueless unlicensed masses please. PMR is in the same general area as the ham-70cm band, only the steps (12.5 kHz) prevent us from stepping on each other, that and the low power PMR radios put out. Are you so keen on beeing QRMed by unlicensed illegals? - also keep in mind that these el cheapo radios have a losy track record when it comes to spurious transmission/harmonics/frontend protection. That increases the likelyhood quite a bit that they become a nuisance to legit operators at some point. I am guessing that you got the rig for free for showing it on your channel, - could not have hurt though to also talk about some of the bads to keep up the appearance of objectivity.
