The VU meters (both types) reveal the possible reason for fatigue listening to certain music, because of the way it's mastered with the volume levels always at max, pegging the meters and clipping. This is known as "brickwall" compression. (Pull one of those songs into Audacity and look at the waveform and you'll see why it's called that.) It's tiring to listen to for long periods of time. Some people think that's the fault of digital audio like CDs, but the early (1990s and earlier) CDs were not mastered that way. Of course, if you take a brickwalled digital recording and just cram it onto vinyl, you're ruining that too. I still like to hear new music. I'm begging the recording industry to stop brickwalling and go back to natural highs and lows so music doesn't hurt so much! (Sorry for the rant. What were we talking about again?)
@TheJoebus6664 жыл бұрын
"Sorry for the rant" you're not the only one who this annoys. I used to have to hunt out older pressings of CDs because the "remastered" versions were brickwalled to fuck. Don't even get me started on Rick Rubin's approach to mixing - Californication and Death Magnetic are travesties

I have to say though that Android misses the easy solution of iTunes. Your iPhone is bricked because you jailbroke it ? Restore it with iTunes. It got stuck updating ? Restore it with iTunes. It doesn’t work ? Put it in DFU and restore it with iTunes. I bricked two of my previous Android phones and often you need to use the specific app made by your phone manufacturer, which is often really bad. That or you install the whole Android SDK so you can enter some command lines and reflash your phone (assuming that the recovery can’t just recover your phone, but I didn’t have much chance with that feature). Annoying considering my Zenfone 2 bricked 2 weeks after I bought it, just because it failed to update to Android 6. Had a similar issue with my Zenfone 4 later on.
@MetalTrabant4 жыл бұрын
I've almost bricked my most recent phone trying to root it... after properly messing up, it didn't even detect charging. Only Flashtool was able to recognize it, so luckily I could still flash the stock ROM back, but I was very worried there for a bit. I've rooted every single one of my older Android devices, so I'm not a newbie in this field, but I failed this one (Vernee MIX2), and don't want to mess with it anymore. Lately Android devices became quite a hard nut to crack at home, if you want root access. Possibly because it enables proper adblocking, which is not good for Google...

Theoretically the UK should soon be able to get rid of this bureaucratic overreach. It'll be interesting to see if they do, or if they are just as idiotic as the EU but in spectacular new ways :)

Having tried many software programs including the one recommended by SONY to easily add artwork to my A55 i thought i would like to share that TagScanner 6.1.6 does this better than any others and it's free . just make sure to set the art work to jpeg 500x500 Mr walkman firmware just done ... excellent in my opinion . Thanks Techmoan . Now it sound nearly as good as my ancient Sanza Clip :)

I've tried setting it to region E2 like yours and was exploring the new icon at top (music record, has a red dot). For me, the original text is missing. The instructions are replaced with a series of numbers. Instead of saying something like "record bitrate", i only get 050005. Can anyone else tap on their record music button and let me know what you see? EDIT: Until someone else confirms, I'm guessing the music record is a japanese-exclusive function. The numbers are placeholders for Japanese text. EDIT2: My A55 is a Hong Kong version btw, original region E. Setting to region E2 also kills language changing, so I can't change to Japanese to test my theory above. In conclusion, for the average user of A55, I suggest setting it to region E to be the most feature-rich in multi-language. Region E2 appears to be unreleased officially by Sony and may contain other bugs. As a side note, the whole reason i got a Hong Kong version was because I wanted to use the official bluetooth remote control. Now we can change region on a whim haha. Other differences on E2 include the dedicated profile for NWNC33 Sony NC headphones.

Thank you so much for this video! I didn't even realize there was a radio function on these devices! I have the UK A55L and so of course no radio function. I always wondered why it says on the back of the box "FM tuner is not available when connected to Bluetooth device". FM tuner?!? I guess the packaging is just standard across all regions in Europe! Again thank you! I know what I'll be doing tonight! :D

Thanks Mat! Absolutely fascinating, as usual, to see all the options on a certain device. However, this video ultimately made me content to now have a recent iPhone, with tracks selectively limited to 128k for playing in the car, because I cannot hear anything better. UTTERLY annoying that back when I was ABLE to hear really good audio, I couldn't even BEGIN to afford it. (My audio setup was very basic for many years.) Now that I CAN afford it, there is no point! Even playing music to the Apple TV through a good soundbar doesn't sound much better. At least I can't tell .... OTOH, at least Australia has *something* to offer the world!

Lol, your comment is the exact reason why they put in a volume cap. Get a pair of noise cancelling headphones rather than trying to increasing the volume and deafenning yourself in the process.

@@Stefan-jk5gx Don't be a div - I'm not talking about blasting dubstep at max volume for hours on end. The level of some audio books is very low and tube is very noisy so you just need to be able to boost for short periods. If you think that's detrimental to your hearing, maybe people like you the reason there's a cap.

tbh these limitations seem just like android limits. I'd even wager there is a similarity in the os used. android phones will b0rk you if you're not looking with a "Uhh level of sound is too high man, like, I'm not going there.. unless you click me." and when so many regional devices have various limits on applications, yet are able to be implemented with a modded firmware (if the device does have the components simply disabled) .. just reeks of bureaucracy to me.

The market crippling is common, and also extends to mobile phones as well, with the US being famous for not having radio reception in devices, probably a result of the AM radio lobby because it is hard to get an AM radio into the small format and still have room for the rest of the unit, plus the performance will be even worse than normal AM is. Many manufacturers allow you to change and update the firmware as well, and you select the region firmware and put it on, getting the feature set needed. Yes generally the Australia/Middle East/Asia firmware has all the capability and least restrictions.
@AfferbeckBeats4 жыл бұрын
That's surprising, as an Australian I'd expect us to have nothing but the finest in unecessary limitations for no reason.
@TheSaabClinicUK4 жыл бұрын
Ive had similar Volume limiting on other products. Such as Sandisk Clip mp3 players. This can be overcome by Factory Resetting and selecting the country as USA. Then you get the full volume.
