I had an argument with a friend back when these were new. He spent something like $300 for one, and switched a lot of his music to minidisc. His main point was that it could fit easily in the pocket, but at the time we all wore baggy pants with pockets large enough to hold a CD player anyway. A few years later I bought an iRiver MP3 player which was great, except that it had a noisy hard drive and if you recorded audio on it, after a minute or so you could hear the hard drive spinning up on the recorded audio. I still have some old guitar recordings with that hard drive sound occasionally chiming in. Agreed, that's a much bigger improvement than I would have expected. Have you ever had a disc which stopped working, couldn't be re recorded or got delaminated or rot in any way?

24:06 I love the design of this one, it seems like they tried to model the front after a regular CD just to prove how much smaller it was. Neat little marketing trick!
@ProfMyronGaines3 жыл бұрын
27:35 This one stood out to me because it looks like a scaled down version of a Sony Discman I had in high school. The lid open opposite to this MD design and there was a display on the front bit where the paint's worn off. Seems like maybe the designers were doing an homage to the predecessor to the MD player.

Loved this kind of laidback video, relaxing with a hint of gambling thrown in as you bet on whether there'll be a disc in each machine. As for your camera area, I think a nice set of Techmoan datum stickers would be of use, pop them on the desk and you'll know where you're supposed to be.

I love the MD format. To me, it is the perfect way to archive vinyl straight from the turntable becsuse of the ease of editing and the format is just right since the medium of vinyl is inherently lossy anyways. I bet I have about 500 mds with material....most with titles that are not available digitally.

"I find Sharp MD players unattractive with their circular motif, chunky design etc." (*Proceeds to loose mind over a Sony player with a circular motif & tumor on the bottom edge, in orange camo no less*) All joking aside, these videos are a lot of fun to watch as I haven't really started collecting MD players (yet) but it's great to see all the different types & designs. Thanks for all the great work!

Thanks for the MD videos I've learnt loads from them . I now know what's worth buying and what to leave alone. I've even bought a Sony MD mini system and I've become addicted the buying cheap bundles of minidiscs and found some great albums I'd never have listened to otherwise including one from a band called colour ocean scene whose members come from my town.

It's so interesting looking at older technology that does one thing REALLY well, or made to do one thing at a certain price point even. In a world where a sufficiently good phone can replace so many of the innovations of the last century, it's nice to step back and appreciate what's come before, and take what ideas from the past we can and bring them forward into the future.

I used to use MD for a backup of DAT recordings for film & TV. I loved the tiny format and the ability to get a second copy made with such a small and light piece of gear. Truth is, however, I never used the backups for anything, they weren't really broadcast standard, but could theoretically have been used in a pinch. I will never get rid of my MD recorder, though, it's still such a wonderful piece of gear, though everything is straight to drive recording now.

That was fun. It inspired me to get my JA333ES out of the loft. I’d forgotten what a tank it is. Quality build from Sony. I recorded a ton of Proms and jazz on radio 3 onto TDK studio discs and am having fun playing through them. Some of them were recorded from the Sony ST-777ES DAB radio via the optical port and some from my Quad FM4. You can tell the difference

Just an quick update on this. After a couple of days playing the unit developed a fault in that the drawer wouldn’t open. A quick search on google suggested that the drawer pulley belt needed replacement. I thought that is was the end as I didn’t think the part would be available. I found the service manual online and got the part number and was amazed to find I could still get it. The belt cost £6 including postage. It arrived next day and after a bit of open case surgery it did the trick and I am now enjoying my discs again.

The sheer variety in the players is amazing, every player seems a little different. I can't imagine minidisk failed as a format because if it did there wouldn't have been nearly as many different players as there are. All the colors and designs and odd features is truly amazing, and I'd bet a lot of people used these as their own little way of self expression.
