I'm also using a dashcam-mirror like this one in my car and i am actually really pleased with the results it delivers. Like you mentioned the buttons on the display are verry inconvenient to press while driving but i normally wouldn't touch my mirror anyway. The model i have also automatically dimms the brightness of the screen at night so you don't get blinded by it an it delivers the same results like in your tests at night. I must admit though that the mirror is not as reflective as a normal mirror, just like you mentioned. Also my particular unit seems to overheat if the car was parked in the sun all day, it then has some nasty screen flicker but it doesn't stop recording though. So, ther are some issues with these kind of dash-cam-mirrors but overall i prefer it over the normal rearview mirror. [In case someone is interested, the model i picked is the "AUTO VOX X2"]

For years I’ve been hoping for decent reviews of 4 channel dashcams. Interesting review, One issue I have had with a couple of dash cams is that when left on a hot (Swiss) summers day they tend to overheat and crash rendering the parking monitor useless. One of these was even manufactured by Garmin. Admittedly this was around 6 or 7 years ago so I hope they are much better now.
@paulanderson795 жыл бұрын
The issue I can foresee is that when you look into a normal flat interior mirror your eyes are focused at infinity as the image is distant. Looking at an image on a screen a couple of feet in front of your eyes is very much nearfield, so your eyes will be constantly refocusing between road ahead and rear view 'mirror'.

@Ralph Reilly Beyond about six metres you're eyes will be focused at infinity. The mirror is much closer than that. Thus your eyes will have to refocus on a screen placed where the mirror is.

I‘m in China and literally everyone uses those in their cars to prevent fraud like grannies throwing themselves infront of your car and later suing you, etc. They are not meant to be „better rear view mirrors“. And the thing in China is, nobody uses their rear view mirror. Like at all. They barely even use their side mirrors! There seems to be this unwritten rule that, the car which is at least more than 50 % of its size infront of you, can do whatever it likes. It‘s up to the car behind him to get out of the way in case of a sudden lane change, etc. So, basically everyone at almost all times just looks forward infront of them and doesn‘t give a crap about stuff that is happening behind them.

Current 'Construction and Use' regulations require an internal mirror to be fitted in all vehicles built after 2010 (before that date the car could have either an internal or a nearside external mirror - plus an external offside). The only exception being vehicles where an interior mirror would not provide an adequate rear view, such as a van without windows in the rear doors, where such a mirror would serve no purpose. So, in general, this type of device would have to be reflective. It is also required that any mirror be mounted so as to avoid vibration (which these rubber straps don't seem to achieve).
@pdrg5 жыл бұрын
I quite like these for quite specific circumstances - even the £16 models. I sometimes use a different HiLux or similar long vehicle each week for a season - they have slanty windscreens meaning a NextBase standard model actually cannot be tucked away behind the mirror so get in the way of your view. The reversing camera is handy if you have a back box. Don't bother with the reversing light tie-in, just leave the display on "rear", and easy to fit/remove when you move vehicles. In fact you reminded me to order a new one as I left my old one overseas for a friend!

Just a tiny correction if you don't mind, mov and mp4 are literally the same format. The MPEG consortium wanted a container, received proposals (apple's mov and microsoft's wmv mostly), and selected mov. About the only change they made is they stripped it of legacy features and down to only a few accepted codecs (rather than the wide selection quicktime had at a time). The file size is fully up to the bitrate of the streams it contains.

I once had a rental car with one of these fitted. It wasn't a chinese aftermarket one though, it was a Nissan factory model. It actually worked really well and I preferred it over the "real" mirror. The main pro to using the camera was that the car had large C-pillars that blocked a lot of the rear view. I wonder if the Nissan display was a lot brighter, or I just got lucky with the weather when I used it. I also didn't notice any lag. Seems like this idea lives and dies by the implementation

I winder if angling the rear camera down would have helped. One really doesn't need to see so much sky in the image, having the upper edge of the picture at about head height should be sufficient to see all number plates, and would have the advantage of howing what was immediately behind the vehicle (small animals or children) and removing the bright sky in the day.

Exactly what you said, if you want a clean install you'll have to go to a professional mechanic. It's never as easy as the instructions make it sound. Like the part for the reversing wire that you opted out of even messing with. ;) Being one of those mechanics who's installed a couple, one for a friend one for a customer who picked the product, let me tell you these cheap aftermarket systems are usually crap for reliability, with terrible install instructions that will usually require having access to wiring diagrams/connector views for the car (or else you'll be poking around with a multimeter trying to find which wire gets B+ in reverse.....and then deciding which is the most convenient place to tap in and run the wire through, etc). So even if you go through the trouble of getting a clean install with no visible wires (which often costs more than the cheap kits themselves), bombproof connections etc, you'll often have the chintzy super-thin gauge wire or connector act up in a year. Or the camera conks out. The absolute easiest time I had with installing a rear-view camera was a factory one on a Mazda. The owner was fortunate that he had a trim level where the camera harness was there, and already all connected up to the factory head unit. Take the trunk trim off to get at it, connect it up and it worked! NOW all you have to do is cut a perfect hole in that blemish-free bumper! If it's not just the right location and orientation the view would be off (since the camera isn't adjustable, it's designed to sit flat at the right point to be aimed as intended), so make it count or you might have extra "ventilation holes" in your trunk! :D

I agree. I bought a car and asked to install this rearview mirror camera and almost never look at it while backing up. My mom's car has just the sensor and a small display on the left hand corner just above the dashboard that displays countdown numbers. It emits intermittent beeps that get continuous when the reading of the display gets near zero. I find this much better. I also miss that feature the original rearview mirror has that allow me to filter the lights of the cars that approach from the rear on the road.

I have an Autovox X2, it’s at the $249.00 US price point, but I have been very happy with it. The rear 720p is WDR, and I can see front plate numbers on cars behind me with headlights blasting the rear camera, if close enough for the 720p resolution. The rear also shifts into black and white at night and increases the color as the light increases. The mirror unit auto-dims, is very responsive. Records both as files. The main mirror screen is very bright. I have a white interior, no issue seeing illuminated rear image. But as I like just the MPH on the screen, I leave it in mode two, which is no image, just detail for Lane Wonder warning (off), and Speed display (On). I have greatly enjoyed the use of the X2 on my Outback. In truth, I like one single item on my window, rather then mirror + other device occupying other areas. As I also have a toll-transponder, it gets cluttered. But that is my solution, and at $249.00, it won’t be for others.

I have one of these except I mounted the rear camera at the top of my rear window, at the top. Works pretty good. Biggest issue for me was the mirror dash-cam adds weight to the rear-view mirror and causes it to slowly droop. So you have to readjust it up every time you drive, and also you start getting paranoid every time that you hit a bump that the mirror drooped again.

Only having a screen as a rearview mirror will never work. It'll never be the right brightness compared to the outside. And how could the screen work at night? Is it going to be a bright screen so you can see it in the dark? Or dark and just show headlights?

Buses and delivery trucks have had rearview cameras for decades. The trick is they put the monitor out of the way and put a glare shield on it. That way you don't have the light from the outside right next to the image. This is how most factory backup cameras work, they put it in the center console monitor. They also use automotive-grade LCDs which are far brighter. The dynamic range isn't an issue, as you can see from this product, a good CCD has better glare isolation than the eye. Your eyes are actually very crappy lenses, your brain is fixing a ton of problems.
@FntX-Video3 жыл бұрын
As it turns out this heavily depends on the technology and safety considerations. In 2019, when this video went up, Daimler announced their "MirrorCam". It's now 2021 and trucks do come with cameras instead of mirrors as standard because a camera can provide a much wider viewing angle therefore lowering to likelihood of crushing bicycles. I assume this tech is now resilient enough to be considered safer than having an old fashioned, physical mirror. I'm curious though how long it takes for cars to receive such tech. On the other hand you can hardly get a car anymore without blind-spot assistants and other safeguards and even the rear camera is getting more and more common even on budget cars.

Agreed -These seem similar to ones that we have just fitted to van at work(No rear view due to bulk head behind)Ours are simply reversing camera specific with no video recording and image quality is great.We use as a reversing camera but could easily be used as rear view.

I used the Aukey dash cam I saw on THIS GREAT CHANNEL for a few years then got one of these style (but from VanTop) and the video is a little worse than the Aukey, but being able to use it as a rear view with a super wide angle is the one killer app for me, as my car has terrible blind spots (69 Charger). I'm going to add the recommended VIOFO A129 dash cam to my current setup. Perfect world: much better video quality and an OLED screen would make the ultimate Rear View Cam. Thanks for all these great product reviews, Techmoan!!!!

Hi Matt, absolutely agree with you, car manufacturers should install recording cameras as standard. I've watched what seems like hundreds of your dash cam vids with great disparity ...wires, files, cards, best one and worse one etc and still haven't bought one! It would be so easy for manufacturers to put a £300 cam and back up technology into a new car that's going to cost of what would have been a medium sized house 25 years ago. Come on car making people wake up and smell the car sales of a car with built in dash cam!!! Toby

Hi Another great video but I cannot agree with you this time because based on your review I ordered a slightly cheaper version at £43 & mine is so bright even in full sun it completely obliterates the reflection, so I disagree that all rear view dash cams aren't worth looking into. Keep up the good work......
@TheJONNYSHADOW5 жыл бұрын
Further to the above the given picture you were critiquing was very contrasty & dark probably down to the fact that you had the camera pointing too high & included the sky which would shut even the most expensive of camera's exposure systems & not just comparatively cheaper dashcams.

My grandma's 2008 Lexus RX350 has one of these from the factory. It's just a small screen (a couple inches across, maybe) on one side, so it's not intrusive. Just big enough to be useful.

Nikolay Klimchuk Note the "police surveillance state" issues. Many people would not want their car to record anything the police could seize as evidence of their overall activities, such as where they go and who they meet. A standalone dash cam is deniable, the citizen can delete the file and claim they forget to turn it on or whatever else. A built in car feature offers no such escape.

I recently bought a very similar unit to replace the 'standard' dashcam I've been using in my firm's van. I'm retired now, so put the dashcam in my own vehicle. The problem with that is the black shading around the mirror mount- the sucker on the dashcam doesn't work on the shaded areas and the only place that I could fit the sucker I thought was probably not entirely legal, as the dashcam did obscure some of the windscreen. I'm quite happy with the new dashcam (front camera only), I've not noticed any vibration, and I've driven in various conditions from bright & sunny to darkness without any problems. Once the display's switched off, the mirror is pretty much the same as the original one, though maybe just a touch darker. I wouldn't use a rear view camera as a replacement for a rear view mirror, and as the new mirror is slightly wider than the original one it gives me a better field of view. It does what I want it to do, so I'm quite happy with it. It was also about half the price of the one tested here.

That's really close to the one I use in my truck. It doesn't come with a rearview camera. I wish it did. For me, a good use for this is on my truck where I can't see out the back window anyway with stuff in the bed. Put this on the rear license plate frame, and it would mean I wouldn't have to rely solely on the side mirrors any more. I've been wanting to get a dashcam for it, and one of these would be good. I may more firmly attach it than just those rubber straps.

I'm a little suspicious of too much tech in cars. I don't mind backup cameras but in general I think that people are starting to rely on tech for lane changing, automatic braking, etc, and aren't necessarily paying as much attention to their surroundings and are instead relying on their cars to tell them something is happening. Tech is great but if I'm behind a truck on the freeway that has a smoking tire about to burst, I know to stay far away from that truck, not sure any tech can figure something like that out
@chrisfreemesser57075 жыл бұрын
Agreed...it's bad enough that cellphones and infotainment systems have created unhealthy distractions for drivers, but now the tech meant to make up for their lack of attention (blind spot monitoring, automatic braking, etc.) is also making them complacent drivers. They figure the car will do the work for them so they need not bother...until it doesn't work and bad things happen.
@uss_045 жыл бұрын
tech is a tool. We’ve known about too much glass in the operators field of view for decades. Fighter pilots called it Combat Overloading, and systems were streamlined to show relevant data in places where’d they need to be read first. Seems like “infotainment” missed that message, now its about bombarding you with shiny notifications. Heck, Fighter pilot cockpits are either a relaxing green or red illumination for instruments. Mosr vehicles have an attention getting Electric blue that even at its dimmest is annoying.

I got one myself recently (different brand), so far it's alright. My car came with a tint in the rear window that I'm not going to bother removing, and this helps me see out the back at night. The added reversing camera function is nice since I didn't have one previously.

@byzhiphop5 жыл бұрын
Hey Techmoan, I got a similar rearview backup dashcam. Autosomething M6. It seems like a lot better option than this one since the screen doesn't take up the entire size of the mirror, just a smaller window in it so it's the best of both worlds. It's not worse as a regular mirror as my built-in one, especially when the screen goes to sleep: I just have a large mirror. The screen is a lot brighter so it's pretty much visible at all times. You can get it to record at 1440p. The only downside to using it as an actual back-up camera is that it's not calibrated to the car so the guide lines are useless and since the camera is wide angle, it gets hard to correlate it to what's really going on behind you. It's really usable to see if anyone's trying to sneak through behind your car when you're about to reverse. The back-up camera part worked through rain and snow.

When you think of what you get for the price it doesn't seem bad value. Maybe if they could get a front camera and the rear camera but no screen down to say £50 it would be great value. Maybe (for LOLZ) you could try it as a "dash" cam and mount it (somehow) on the lower dash and use it for a reverse cam and a night-time rear cam. It's dark 4 months a year to and from work anyway. Obviously you would still be recording the front cam just at a lower angle. Always love the dash cam videos. That's what most of us originally came for. 👍

Since I do most of my driving at night in an Audi hatchback with a rather small rear window, the idea of a nighttime camera mounted outside the car is quite appealing. Just seems like everything else would be too much of a bother, and plus I'm so used to cars without reversing cameras that I'd likely just be wasting my money. Good review, decent puns.
