Watched more of the video. May I recommend a mod to the kit? Why not include a wire that plugs in to the socket at 11:00 to 11:17 or so? Is that a rare item or something? I feel like the kit would be even easier if you had a plug available. Pardon my useless rambling, though, i'm not an electronics engineer - yet. It's an awesome kit nonetheless!

@SkigBiggler4 жыл бұрын
@@CptJistuce I'd hazard a guess theyd both abuse the properties of CRTs to achieve their effects, even if the rendering process is different. They both use CRT monitors, although the Vectrex doesn't use the mask since it doesn't render pixels, and likely has a different formulation of phosphors used.
@CptJistuce4 жыл бұрын
@@SkigBiggler The Vectrex also doesn't have a regular scan pattern that hits every part of the screen, because vector displays directly trace the visible image(basically, an electronic Etch-a-Sketch). And that's why the traditional way of making lightguns and lightpens work doesn't work, and the 8-Bit Guy video referenced isn't actually relevant. You can't watch to see when the beam is going by if the beam isn't touching most of the screen, and that is the key property of a raster-scan display that lightpens and lightguns traditionally exploit. Lightpens on vector displays require a more complex approach because of that(and if a lightgun is even p possible, I'll be surprised). Incidentally, color vector displays DO have a shadow mask. The Vectrex doesn't use one because it is monochrome, not because it is vector. Monochrome raster-scan displays don't have shadow masks either.

Thanks for another trip into the past, today, I need the escape more then ever. You mentioned the covid delay, we got hit with it, it was nearly like a two by four to the forehead. My wife was having stomach trouble, in March, the doctor wanted to order an upper GI, however the hospital had closed the surgical unit because of covid. So it was, we had to wait till May to have it checked out, as the doctors treated her for an ulcer. The test was done on my birthday, the 26th of May, and the following Monday we got the call. CANCER! It is a rare but very aggressive type, she was admitted to a hospital in a nearby city some 125 miles North, and underwent her first emergency Chemo therapy, thankfully it appears she is responding, however the doctors are not encouraged by this, it may add, perhaps a few months to her life. Needless to say, I have ordered my last item from China because of this, and three times a day I pray to God to give her the strength to carry on. If you or anyone who reads this are willing, please add her to your prayers, she is a wonderful lady and has stood by my side for over 50 years, she waited at home for me when I served my nation in Vietnam back in 70-71, she was a great companion during my 24 years on the police department, all the time serving patients at the local nursing homes and hospitals as a certified nurses aid with med privlidges. Once again, please keep Judy in your prayers and thoughts as she fights this evil desease.

Always love your videos even if I have no idea what you're working with. Never heard of this thing but it looks fantastic. Also, no wiring job ever works out the first time. There's always some wire that decides to go where it shouldn't.

I must say, very cool! The Vextrex was awesome machine for its day! The light pen was a surprise, too...I had no idea they made one for it. Of course I’ve only seen the Vectrex on KZbin and usually it’s games they are talking about obviously. The light pen really was cool on this system. Honestly surprised how advanced this thing was for its time!

The Vectrex passed me by as a youth. I have to confess, it looks amazing; even in the 21st century! No amount of emulation can reproduce the beauty of those CRT images..!

Vector displays were nice in so many ways. I seem to recall people taking the deflection yoke off the neck of the CRT in a television while leaving it hooked into the sweep circuitry. Then they would get another yoke and place it on the CRT. Finally they would hook up the horizontal and vertical deflection coils to the speaker outputs of an audio amplifier, and have a TV-sized audio pattern display. Never tried it myself, but it was tempting. 😉

Dust cleaning tip - take it outside on a dry day and use battery powered leaf blower. Makita does nifty small one. Very handy for electronics and does not introduce electrostatic.

Except you can only draw lines, but anywhere and everywhere. But it doesn't have pixels so technically you have HD lines!

The Vectrex screen is a CRT, it's just controlled a little differently.

I bought a Vectrex when it came out in the 1980s. It's the only piece of 80s tech that I wish I'd hung on to. I agree that the buzz was annoying. Glad to see a fix came out, even if it was too late for me.

Born in 76 I feel like I missed so much technology in the early years when I watch your channel. My first cd was Metallica black album. I guess I'm a tweener tape to cd..

My Vectrex has that buzz, too. I might not fix it for a long time, but at least now I know where the problem is. Thank you!

I've actually never seen the lightpen in use. My mind is blown by that. 1983! I had never seen a Vectrex when they were still relevant so my experiences from that time was my Atari 2600 and my Uncle's Vic-20. I don't know if my mind could have processed it if I had seen that back then. It would have been black magic fuckery. It still kind of is.

I was lucky enough to get one back in 1982 for my first communion gift. I still have it. It even survived a house fire. I just need to get a multi cart and overlays.
