Great making others aware of this issue. I see greater set back with some defensive rounds than others and typically shoot them at the end of a range day once I feel they might cause a malfunctions on my EDC. Retired Fed LEO and we would normally fire a box of duty rounds after shooting training rounds all day to distinguish recoil. I utilize my “set backs” for this purpose and also work on “tap/rack/bang” drills that will probably happen with “set back” rounds you successfully articulated.😂👍🤠

This is eye opening. Which also means that eventually as you keep replacing your defense rounds, eventually you will damage them over time. Which means that it is important to have a few spare rounds available. Bottomline, this is expensive in the long run.

I just went to clear my pistol and two rounds came out after the magazine was out. I was really confused about it and I looked at the rounds. They were significantly setback and I had no idea at all about this. Im so glad to have found this before something really catastrophic happened.

I do the max capacity round but I use a 25 count box of ammo when I do it. So each round gets used once every 26 days I do that for a while (months) then I shoot those rounds when I train.

People that instructed my conceal carry class asked what are some of the dangerous of carrying the same ammo for extended amounts of time. I brought up bullet setback from chambering the same rounds over and over. They told me if the bullet gets set back your guns malfunctioning. I knew better. I still hadn't found a semi auto handgun that doesn't set back rounds. Friggin fudds.

Also, if you chamber the same round over and over, it could damage the primer and make it a non functioning round.

Would you still use those setback rounds for a range day? I’m assuming there’s a higher chance for a malfunction, but maybe good to get some reps in clearing the gun.

I'd guess if the round isn't setback enough to be visually noticed you are probably fine. Especially if it's normal pressure ammo, and you have a gun rated for +p you get more wiggle room for safe pressures.

@@johnnixon2504 I'm definitely holding out for the bronze. My shotgun is all black but i don't feel like gettung it cerakoted mainly because i don't have a clue how i want it done. So the cr would be a little blingy without being ridiculous. Then the next shotgun i want to get is a bronze 1301 from Langdon tactical but Illinois needs to get their heads out of their ass with the assault weapin ban first. The 1301 and cr920 will be a nice pairing since the cr is mostly black with a little bronze and the 1301 is mostly bronze with some black.

How many tines can you chamber a round before it can be a issue? I usually always keep a round chambered but occassionally i empty to clean and then rechamber that round?
@ShadowSystemsCorp
@ShadowSystemsCorp Жыл бұрын
It really depends on that round. Neck tension and depth of the crimp can vary and some rounds will start to set back after just a few trips into the chamber. Sometimes, it never happens. Just keep an eye on it. If it starts to get chewed up or look short, pitch it. Sorry I can’t be more specific but it really depends. Trevor

Okay guys. Just speaking FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE okay? Take it with a grain of salt. I use Remington 115 grain JHP. The 100 round value box that you can buy for $29.95 to $32 from Walmart back then. From my own experience using my G19 and using these 9mm rounds THE ROUNDS get SET BACK after a few chambers.

I know it happens but I don’t think it’s as big of an issue as people make it out to be. Keep an eye on the condition of the round and if it looks like it’s getting grooves, chunk it in the range ammo. Pressure, sure. But we aren’t shooting revolvers with magnum +P+ ammo it isn’t rated for. I’m just shooting NATO weight and power. The kinds of pressure that make a handgun or rifle go boom typically come from accidental double loads by hand loaders. Reliability could be an issue. But if you dry fire practice most days, just download your main mag and upload with dummy rounds. Mix the rounds up and all your rounds get cycled frequently. Inspect them as you load your mag back up. If you aren’t dry fire practicing, why not? Either way, the rest of your mag should work fine. You are practicing malfunction drills right?

Hey Trevor. Nice vid. Have traded a few emails w/ Cody inquiring about dropping the round into chamber, releasing the slide and then inserting the mag. After his explanation I inquired about dry firing with Strikeman. Would you do a vid(s) on these topics? Thanks, Kevin

On my 920 to load I lock the slide open, drop a round into the chamber, muzzle down while doing so, release lock slide. Gun is loaded. Now I insert a magazine, verifying locked in, holster weapon. Reverse procedure to unload.
@KravMagoo
@KravMagoo Жыл бұрын
He has a video about why you DON'T WANT TO DO THAT. It will cause damage to the extractor (which ejects the spent round) because when you release the slide, the ejector gets jammed into the backside of the rim as it forces its way to the front. By doing this, you cause damage to the rim of the round's casing, but worst of all, you are causing that fixed ejector serious stress, which can cause it to eventually sheer off. That's the last thing you want to happen if you actually need to bring your weapon to bear in an incident. It is a short cut with serious short comings.

I have always kept my carry gun loaded and only unload to clean or at the range.If I unload my weapon and have to reload-I won’t use that round more than one time through the chamber-it will go in a bag I keep for this purpose and after a few months and I have 20-30 rounds that have been in and out of my Glock,I’ll use those rounds at the range or during qualification.I learned a long time ago about this issue in my unit while on active duty,and I don’t trust ammo that’s been loaded and unloaded.

does bullet setback happen to bonded rounds as well?
@JG54206
@JG54206 Жыл бұрын
Can happen to any round. It’s not about the bullet construction but the interface between the bullet and casing. Things like a crimped case where the bullet is more tightly seated or a round nose FMJ that slides into the chamber with less resistance than a hollow point with a sharp angle can be less prone, but any round can experience set back. My general rule of thumb is 5 times into the chamber and I fire it off for pistols. You can also compare the chambered round to a round from lower in the mag stack to see if it’s been set back. If they came from the same box of ammo, they should be the same overall length.
@jamesdelong6401

Yes sir. 💯 agree. This is why I actually get in the habit of every 2 months and fire and use my EDC ammo up and buy fresh. One: you get practice time with your defense ammo. Two: keep it, fresh. My opinion on the matter and when I bring this discussion up. 30 to 60$ for a box of defense ammo every few months is WORTH IT, if that day comes and I have to pull my pistol out and go to work. That ammo gotta be ready. Worth spending 30 to 60$ on a box of defense ammo and keep your ass covered.

Dry fire practice could be one reason. In my case I unload because there are always children in the house, my own as well as other people's. It's just an extra precaution that a lot of people don't really need to take, but for those of us that do it's important to remember that bullet setback is an issue.
