Essence of above lecture noted by me: *********************************************** Container - it is like a Virtual machine (like EC2 instance). Docker/Docker Engine - it is tool to create this container/VM. Why Docker? In normal cases, development team develops an application and provides application to Testing team. But testing team complaint of not able to run the application. There could be below problems of app. not working on tester machine while it works on developer machine- 1. Hardware components 2. Dependencies 3. Some software required by app not available on tester machine. 4. Mismatch of version of software required by app on tester machine. The solution to above is: 1. Share the software with right version required by your app. along with app 2. Some softwares could be OS related, so share the complete OS. But, in real world, it is impossible to share the OS. So the feasible option is Virtualization. Share the OS installation files, softwares and your application. This will be shared in the form of Image file. Running the image file on tester machine will create virtualized environment by install OS, software and then application that is to be tested. So, Docker is an advanced version of Virtualization.The main purpose of Docker is Containerization. Containerization v/s Virtualization: 1. In Virtualization, the OS is installed on the Virtual machine but in Containerization, the OS is used from the actual OS from server machine. 2. In Virtualization, the infrastructure (like RAM, Memory) allocated once is reserved whether is in use or not. But in Containerization, the infra is allocated as per the demand and released to server machine when not in use. So this way resource is not wasted and used efficiently. So, the Hypervisor is replaced with Docker Engine and Virtual Machine is replaced with Container. That's the reason it is called Containerization instead of Virtualization however both works the same way but Containerization is more efficient compared to Virtualization because of above two key difference. Docker provide you with an image which contains all the softwares required to run your application. And now, you can run your application smoothly on multiple machines with this container created by this image. Docker fetches all the required software from its own repo called Docker Hub. *********************************************************

Thanks you! got good understating about docker. I just would like to share that, VM's which are running on vmware ESXi hosts are not consuming all resources which are assign to it unless and until those are reserved for it. So you can allocate memory, CPU or storage to multiple VM's till resources are available on host.
