What about a tapper. With a 45 degree Y branch take off. Say 8" to 12" on centre tapper With 8" 45 degree Y branch.

For ease of measuring a curved line. Without the use of string or wire to lay along the line. The more you divide it, the more accurate it is. It's like messing a curved line with small straight sections.

Mushtaq Mirza it's a shortcut to mark out the approximate circumference while minimising error. It would be more accurate to calculate the actual width of the chord. Try this online calculator/app: www.handymath.com/cgi-bin/onlinearcapp8.cgi?submit=Entry
