I am a DJ and started out in 1978! I'm 57 years old now! Fast forward to today! After using the SL1200MK2 for all those years, I bought a new one in 2010 as a home unit for playback only. After unboxing it, I assembled it very carefully. I used the white cartridge adjuster to get the cartridge in the right position as well as a protractor! I have never had an issue with cogging, wow or flutter. My hearing is excellent because being an engineer I made my own split cue system that I took on the road before split cueing became standard on most mixers today! Apart from standard noise floor issues inherent with vinyl, doing AB tests with the same cartridge, I cannot hear any cogging or noise coming from the 1200 I own. I used a CD upside down on my unit at home to mimic a noise floor! When acoustic feedback started, if I had been playing a record at that level, I would have blown my speakers to hell! Whoever started the cogging myth needs to be shot! My 1200 is 100% silent. Other decks I've used like the Audio Technica are a joke! It cogs badly and you can hear 3 phase hooting just by standing next to it with platter running! I rest my case!

I know I have sentimental reasons too - but I got hold of some vintage gear and records from thrift stores. When music finds relative quietness in passages or at the end of a piece, you hear and feel instruments voices come to rest naturally one by. The spirit of music that inspires you is more fully expressed and present in the room. I’m told this is due to transients truncated by algorithm. I do hear a difference. The room itself is more alive with the inspiration.

I have a Technics SL--110 two-speed direct drive from around 1976 which was sold without a tonearm. I installed an SME3009 Type II Improved tonearm. Considering its performance as it now is, I don't ever intend to replace it. Its operation is dead quiet and it has perfect speed regularity. Also have an older Thorens TD-124 belt & idler drive turntable that is not quite as quiet that the Technics but it does have 78 rpm. For this tonearm (also an SME 3009 but with a removable headshell) I have an extra headshell with a 78 stylus which makes switching to 78 rpm quick and easy.

I owned a Nottingham Analog Space 294 turntable for 7 years and used it everyday. I would put a strobe on it periodically and it was dead stable rock solid at both 33 and 45 rpm. That table used a high mass platter (it weighed 30lbs). I currently use a Technics SL-1200GR and I am happy with it, but that Nottingham table was an amazing piece of kit. @RobFisherUK6 жыл бұрын
Fwiw, I'm in it for nostalgia, novelty, ritual (I tend to sit and listen to whole albums more), some cool new releases (eg Jack White record that plays inside out, Doom box set, fancy marbled vinyl releases, Tool picture disc), and the ability to listen to old non-remastered records. I suspect the relatively elastic belt allows irregularities in speed to be absorbed by stretching and relaxing, at a minute distance and time scales. The momentum of the platter would minimize loss of speed during excess tension and help re-tension the belt from excess relaxing. The heavier the platter, relative to the belts resilience, the better this damping would be.

Belt drive turntables became popular shortly after the introduction of direct drive (mainly Technics) turntables. The claims that belt-driven turntables were superior was based on the idea that direct drive turntables, having the motor as part of the turntable, were for that reason, inherently prone to rumble, ignoring the fact that a well designed direct drive motor was actually less prone to rumble than a belt or idler driven turntable having a high speed motor on the same chassis and thus being actually more prone to produce vibrations that were within the audible range. The reality is that these smaller manufacturers were not in a position to design and manufacture their own direct drive motors (or buy them from Panasonic) so they simply claimed that a belt-driven (and less expensive) design was somehow superior in performance to a direct drive. A well designed and manufactured direct drive turntable has a typical rumble specification of -70 db which is very hard to beat and capable of nearly perfect speed accuracy.

@@andressegovia1221 that is surprising actually I did have your same opinion before I fought that my phone it's all what I needed which is petit match true an tell someone give me a Crosley Cruiser suitcase style record player as a gift four my birthday three years ago it was a whole new experience for me I never had anything like this it was analog with no screen or files I felt in love with vinyl crackling and the fact that you have to do things to listen to the music and now I have a very big collection that I really enjoy this is why I was looking for a better turntable because my Crosley doesn't sound that good it was okay but I needed something better this is why I landed on your video

Well, it all depends really. Thomas Bangalter went through painstaking processes to record bass for Daft Punk's Random Access Memmories. Using vintage and modern microphones. The newest album from Daft Punk is one of the best modern vinyl pressings to date. Something every music lover should experience!!

@@TechnoDad Is it possible to buy spareparts for this new TT yet? I have an old mk1200II, but it's hard to find a new platter. Perhaps I can just switch out the magnet under the new platter to the old one? Also what cartridge do U prefer now when shures M447 and others are history...?
@TechnoDad6 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I haven't checked though. You can't switch out the magnet as that mates up with the new motor. I have always used Ortofon so I'm stiking with those.

Hahahahahaha!!! I know, right?! Do you think I should get another one of these and do an hour long DJ set?

Technics are cool. DJing is cool. I've still got my original SL-1200s from 1991. I am a House/Trance DJ on the weekends btw. So yes go for it, but make sure you buy a Louis Vuitton handbag for your wife, keep her sweet. Classic diversion tactics for all Audio nuts!!! Lol

I have a ton of trance records from 1999 - 2003. I was going to use those, LOL!! I still DJ, but mostly weddings. This TT was given to me to review, so I have 90 days to figure out if I'm going to buy it or return it. I get it at a pretty decent price so I might just keep it and sell off the pair I bought in 2001. No need for diversion tactics, but I get what you're saying!

Cogging is BS created by belt drive audiofools. The original 1200 mk2 to mk6 were the real deal. New GR model is poor in quality control by comparison and for a lot more money.
