Yup, they did indeed. Like quite a few Hi-Fi manufacturers they 'were' notable, became less so, and the quality of the older equipment seems to be forgotten about.

I have one. It is a great amplifier, built like a tank. It has a dual mono configuration that you find only in high end, high quality and high priced audiophile models. Mine is 1992 model i believe, and was sitting in a store until 1995. Was purchased when store was going out of business at discounted rate ( back than it ran for about 2000 DM...and average monthly income was about 200DM ). Anyhow, let me talk about some myths about the aforementioned amp. Some say that it sounds bad, that has no bass and that via Direct input losses that little bass it had.....well, somewhat true. And here is how you fix that. Most important thing when you get this amplifier;"TRASH THE POWER CORD THAT COMES WITH IT". I have spent about 250 bucks on a decent power cord and it is amazing how it miraculously creates the bass. The whole low end of frequency spectrum is brought to life and highs become so much clear and open. Not much difference in mid range, yet that never was the problem. Also, be careful with the interconnects. Not going to lie, I've spent on those more than on the amp. Here is what I've concluded. Technics SU-V900 is actually a supreme amplifier, true Hi-Fi component that has been underestimated and under priced ( yes, I've said it ) and if you look at it as a higher end component and surround it with higher end ins ( CD-player, record player, Network player, etc...) and outs ( speakers ), It'll deliver some serious Hi-Fi. I have done some room treatment too,....basically, I have approached it as I would have approached Krell, Mark Levinson, Classe, MBL, Sonus Faber, B&W.... Also, I've read on some forums people saying that switches and volume control are noisy, loos and "scratchy" ?!?!?! It is a 25 year old amp and i have experienced none of the above. It works perfectly like it did when was brand new. And for those who wonder about Technics AA class circuitry, yes, it operates in a pure A class until in demand for a higher output. Matsushita has developed this hybrid that allows it to coexist with B class parallel amplification. So it basically goes into AB class mode when pushing out max wattage. Due to A class linearity and low THD, Technics named this AA Class. French Devialet does similar concept combining small A Class amp with main D class. Resulting high efficiency of a D class with sound quality of class A amp. Gosh, I wrote a book here...sorry....:)

Hi SF2! Glad you like it! And 'beastly' is a good way to describe it! RARR! :-)

Hi. And yup, it's a beast. The volume thing... it was actually VERY loud, but it's not obvious in the video. And you're quite right about the volume, although it was louder in person, the volume control did have a fairly large 'quiet' range. But half way, as was in the video, in person? it was LOUD! :-)

Hi Baz. Glad you like it! I had a feeling I worded my comment poorly before, when I mentioned they were difficult to sell on. I meant they were difficult to part with as they are both very good amps. And you MUST make a video featuring you comparing your equipment. I particularly like the idea of comparing your 2 Technics, as they feature same/similar caps, transformers, etc, but 1 is true dual mono and the other isn't. It'd be worthwhile seeing if there are significant differences! :-)

Hi. Yup, it's nice. I've sold it on so I had to Google to find the answers to your questions: Wattage (taken from online scan of service manual) is 100 watts into 8 ohms and 140 watts into 4 ohms. Hope this helps!

Oh, and both were difficult to sell on! If I had more space and didn't need to refine my collection they'd both be with me now! :-)

Good question and unfortunately one very hard to answer from memory. So rather than make sweeping, inaccurate statements, I'll say neither are particularly old or new, both are of dual mono construction, both uber powerful, and both built like tanks... and my memory of their sound is both were insightful, had a huge soundstage, and weight/power/bass. Even with various differences (integrated vs power, pro vs home use, class AA vs A/B) I remember no significant sonic differences.

Short note to all: My channel is still 'young' & I do this for fun, not for loads of views/ad revenue, so I don't need to encourage trolling. I also want my channel to be troll free (hence why all comments have to be approved). I appreciate RB's 'point', but it is bordering on being just a wee bit offensive. If a trend develops these comments will be deleted. If people want to comment in my channel, play nice.

At 100watts i would expect it to be Very uncomfortable at 1/2 volume. Are you running a heavy load or something? Its not the first time i've come across similar behavior. I recently demoed a Kenwood 7020 rated at 110watts@8ohms. That had to be turned up all the way up to 2/3rds to reach a good level, Odd. Interesting Vid, defiantly a nice beast. Cheers

No worries. I'm just being cautious. Very! I've seen YT comment streams rapidly descend into nonsense from the smallest jibes. And this Technics video is by far my most popular thus far, so it's a good opportunity to make it clear to all that my little 'ol YT channel will remain an area free of that.
