Want to paddle faster or more efficient? In this series, we pull back the curtain on how our paddlers learn different techniques. Our coaches are happy to share this information to help grow the sport here in the US and around the world. GHCKRT coaching staff spends time reviewing videos of the paddlers so that they can learn from each other and we get to tag along!
We are excited you are interested in joining the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team!
There are many ways you can start or continue your paddling journey with us. Our youth program is divided into several teams to accommodate different ages and skill levels. Each team has its own practice schedule and coaching staff dedicated to instilling both great technique and great sportsmanship in all athletes. Love watching the kids, but want to get out on the water too? Our Masters program is a great way to learn how to, and become competitive in sprint canoe or kayak as an adult!

Very helpful and great explanation of what to think about, not just what the result looks like.

Really great info here! Also noticeable how much upper back/neck/head movement there is in the paddler in the orange K1 (reminds me of the first dozen or so times I used a wing paddle, and the resulting boat bounce). Ivan Lawler also has some really good clips on this as well, where he puts some markers on his shoulder and hip to show the alignment through the stroke.

This is a great video I was looking for an open canoe video tutorial, but this translates well. It feels so different using your core, when you truly feel it you know and the power is such a difference too.

Exactly ! No hip rotation isolates the work from the legs and the upper body - drive with the legs and transfer the power through the whole body.

Oscar has a tip; rotate non drive side hip forward. I was sceptical, tried it, and found an improvement for same effort

@@steven2saas sorry couldn't find it. It is was during one of his coaching vids (which are usually 30min long and there are quite a few of them).

True this is why we use pullbars on the footrest or heel supports so you can really pull the hip forward as well as push the drive side down. I also really like seats and shorts with less friction so you don´t need to put a lot of energy in this rotation.

From coach Alyson “get used to 60 degrees for the right hand control”

@@gigharborpaddling thank you for the advice. Actually I'm using 75° and I started to feel some arm injures. Concerning the angle is there any research that explains the correct angle or just practicing to know ? But the way, I'm huge brazilian fan of the chanel, please keep posting the videos.. I have been learning so much with them.

@@Gilvisley after consulting with usa rep of braca,Chris Chappell, we can say the more the angle the harsher it is on joints. Minimum 35° max 60°. If there is pain in any joints especially the wrist then keep bringing angle down.

Not unusual to see someone drive with their legs but the hips dont move. A spray desk or something rubbing against the pelvis is good feedback. The absolute best is the Nelo rotating seat. It makes rotation easy.

Any tips on how to correct this in a paddler? A land based and or water based drill or exercises to do? (specially interested for kayakers)

I like to have paddlers do the "power position drill" or the "backing drill". Maybe some videos we will put together soon to show you!

наилучший вариант это анатомический правильный "плавающий" слайд сам подсказывает идеальное движение но он может быть запрещен правилами как это пытались сделать с "clap skates" в 1990-х гг

The way I felt what I was supposed to feel when rotating properly. My coach held the paddle in the water where it would be as it entered the water and I had to rotate my boat with my hips while holding the paddle without pulling on the paddle. I just repeated until I could feel it that was a real eureka moment.
