Technique is the most important part of playing the piano. Do you wonder why you can't play as fast as you want, or why it hurts to play? It's all about technique! When you know how to use your arms, hands, wrists, and fingers correctly, you can transform your technique and be able to play the songs and pieces that you want to play! When you're ready to get really good, check out my Become A Piano Superhero courses.

You are not just a wonderful piano performer. You are an awsome teacher. I met some nice piano players who cannot teach. Thy don't want to. But... in my opinion, whenever you teach somebody, you improve your own skills and technique, even if it's online.

Thank you and this really reinforced the superhero course. The relaxation and pillow analogy works very well for the thumb and the stronger fingers but when I get down to the pinky and sometimes even the fourth finger I feel really sloppy and out of control. Suggestions are welcomed.

The coordination of those fingers isn't as advanced as your others, and this will get more attention as you continue with the lessons in Become A Piano Superhero.

This is really excellent- kinetics are not explained by anyone except maybe on one other channel. I think this is extremely important and I wasn't getting much of this from my accomplished piano instructor. The instructor was in his world, not mine - I guess that works to some extent, not sure. Like golf, I think you have to get out of your bad ways and do what is kinetically correct - I am a beginner at both piano and golf. Much practice, but as you say, practice makes permanent. The learner has to have the correct model in mind and it is a waste without that... Thanks for another superb pro share.

Absolutely! How you move determines everything. Most people think learning to play the piano is just about figuring out what notes to play, but that's missing the point.

Correct, correct correct!! Wow!! I know. I am 3 years late but I love this reply comming from you a beginner. At least someone sees the point. I am a working pianist and this is so true. The way you do something can really effect you good, or bad. If you practice something good, you are going to permanently get it down but if you practice something bad, or in a wrong manner? Then you are going to develope bad habits and you will develope permenant bad habit. Haha!! Exactly.

I'm so glad to know that it was helpful! I can't really give you medical advice - you'd need to check with your doctor about that. However, I do know from personal experience that if you practice with good technique, you will prevent any further damage.

Any reason for the latency between you hitting a key and the actual sound being heard, or is it just youtube playing tricks again?

Hi! Just found your videos and they’re very good! Quick question though, if I buy your superhero 1 course do I only get access to the videos for 1 year? Thanks
@ThePianoKeys
@ThePianoKeys 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! You get to download and keep all the materials, and you have access to the lessons for one year. It's kind of like a college class - you don't need to keep coming back to it after you've done it. And if you give the course about 10 minutes a day, you'll be through the whole 3-course package in well under 6 months.

@@ThePianoKeys Ok, thanks! Oh, also, do you recommend I work on one video a day? Just going through the order of the videos. Or should I be doing 1 hand independence, 1 finger independence and 1 speed/agility exercise all on the same day?

Horowitz kept his nails long and played with a flatter hand - you will not achieve a beautiful tone playing on your fingertips.......you need to play closer to the fat of your middle fingers on the white keys and play on the fatter part of your fingers on the black keys - watch Horowitz, Rubinstein and Barenboim and the way they approach the keyboard......gravity yes but avoid your fingertips for a better tone
@ThePianoKeys
@ThePianoKeys 3 жыл бұрын
You make an excellent point! However, this is a tutorial for beginners. The people you are referring to are masters of the craft who choose different approaches to the keys based on a huge storehouse of knowledge and experience. They don't default to playing with flatter fingers because they don't have any other way to play, neither do they always play with flatter fingers. I, too, use different hand and finger positions depending on what I play, but I have a lifetime's worth of experience playing many different styles of music. So, when you teach beginners, you start with the basics. In effect, we're talking about basic math vs. trigonometry. This is a basic math tutorial. You have to teach a good, basic technique before adding to the movement toolbox. Also, I don't agree that you need to avoid your fingertips for a better tone. What is a "better" tone? Better than what? That is far too general a statement with too many exceptions - what kind of tone are you going for? The answer to that question will determine the position of your fingertips, your hand, your wrists, even your entire body. Look at Jerry Lee Lewis standing up and pounding the keys from above. It was correct because it resulted in the tone that he was going for. It would be absolutely incorrect for a Chopin Nocturne, for example. 😊

Ummmm…. I am a pianist as well, and Marina is correct…. We are together on this. Just because maybe pianists back in the old days played a certain way doesn’t mean it is correct and having long nails on the keys is wrong actually,,, the reason is because you do need that artch in your Ingres. You are not going to get anywhere playing with flat fingers. Actually it is going to slow you down you have to use proper technique. That is like a pianist I heard on KZbin one day. He said you shouldn’t use a bench. That is wrong. He used a chair with a back he said it was better for long performances which is terribly wrong. As a good pianist or a great one, you have to bee able to move and a chair with a back is going to make you look very sloppy. You never want to use a chair with a back when playing the piano. It is going to bee mayoue look ver y sloppy. As far as Horowitz. He may have had long fingernails but this is the wrong thing. Little do people know especially these days back then they ddin’t know better on a lot of things. It is just not proper. You could have your nail actually rip off in the keys when you are doing fast passages and runs. This is absolutely wrong. A pianist has to have short fingernails so they can play easier and yes. Playing with the tips of your fingers is going to make it better, because, yo are able to make increasing moves in our speed. Flat fingers, and long fingernails is a no no…. Liste to what marina says here. People of the past might have done something but does this mean it is fine? No… we learn from history. The way that someone in the past did something doesn’t mean that it is correct. Maybe back then,,, that is all they knew. But yo us have to bee able to do things the correct way and sometimes the correct ay is the most uncomfortable way. Just like sitting at the piano. You are going to bee so much more comfortable, at a table because you can pull yourself in to the table and relax. Well, sitting at a piano is really not supose to bee all peaches and roses and relaxing. You have to sit far enough way from the keys to bee able to move and play it. So the wrong way may seem comfortable but it is not the correct way. Look at Marina’s video practice makes permanent. The way you do something is not perfect. It is permanent. You do something the wrong way you are going to teach yourself ba habit. If you do something the correct way, you are going to excel. Just because a pianist does something doesn’t mean it is correct. Like chewing gum and having long fingernails. I knew a church pianist who did that. Popping gum and clicking on the keys. Does this mean it is correct? No. Not at all…
