This is the first time I've heard a good explanation for 8 frames in the supers, as well as a better way to get frames drawn out. Great content, thanks.

So far I have put in 9 frames (drawn out) in a 10 frame box. Your technique has modified my thinking and I will follow your technique

Man I love those homemade spacers. You need to bring those homemade spacers to the Hive Life conference next year. I want to check those out, Lol.I have tried 9 frame spacing with ok results but this video explained what I was doing wrong. Thank you sir.

Great explanation 👏 It’s going to make getting foundation drawn out much easier because it is difficult to get the bees to draw out foundation at the sides 👍 Thank you for sharing 😊 🇬🇧

Good stuff man. Something to think about. I typically undersuper with boxes of foundation but it is frustrating when they fill middle first. This method makes a lot of sense!

Good video Gus. Good procedure. Not really related to Gus's video but possibly a tip for newer beekeepers, if you have a super with a mix of drawn and foundation frames it seems totally logical to alternate between drawn and foundation. That is not a good plan as it always results in very thin combs on the foundation frames and much fatter combs on the drawn frames. What works for me is to group all of the drawn comb frames together and do the same for the foundation frames. The only critical factor is to keep the frames spaced equally. Now there is an exception to this rule. It has been my experience that if you have a full super of foundation frames and have any drawn combs available, placing a drawn comb frame in the first and last frame position in the otherwise all foundation super seems to draw the bees up onto the foundation frames quicker. This works on the same principal as Gus' procedure for placing his foundation frames in the middle. This advice is meant to supplement Gus' video NOT to change his information at all. Gus is an experienced beekeeper and knows what he is doing. Keep up the good work Gus!

Working hard this year to build comb my first time. I had a large bridge comb built in less than a week filled with nectar. I cleared it and I'm feeding it back to them. I rewaxed z5 frames to encourage some drawing

True, mold doesn't kill bees farmers do with pesticides, superdfm from "strong microbials "will take care of that . Also varoa mites kill colonies, oxalic acid vapor with Robs instantvap will take care of that. Bees just coat over mold, not an issue. Thanks Gus for educational videos

Thanks Gus! It was great meeting you at Hive Life. If you are ever in Denver let me know. How many frames do you put in your comb honey shallows? I put two drawn comb frames on each end and eight for comb in between. The comb honey seemed not as thick as I might like.

Gus, thanks for the videos. When you have old comb or comb they have made into drone cells on Acorn or Premier foundation, do you just scrape off, re-wax or discard and pop a new foundation in? Thanks!

I can’t find any videos on making an eight frame spacer. Does anyone have a link to one?
@lenturtle79544 ай бұрын
Metal frame spacers are way better than plastic. 8 frames are better than 9 or 10 as fars as honey per box . The one drawback is you have to be more gentle with handling 8s or they will tear themselves apart if handled roughly . Self spacers are better in brood boxes and frame spacers in honey supers speed up supering during the honey flow because you dont have to stop to evenly space the frames .
@alhambraorchardapiary48822 жыл бұрын
Interesting have seen 9 frame in a 10 frame box, had never seen 8. On comb honey you leave 10 per box though right?

Yes 10 in comb hone supers

No sorry I don’t. The very well worn ones came from my good friend and mentor Robert Hodum they’re what he used for decades. I had to earn those spacers so I’ll be keeping them forever lol. I believe there is a brighter pair in the video that’s not been used. I’ve made a couple similar sets for back ups but I haven’t made any to sell.

Question are you sure that’s not mold on your frames, if it is you have to really clean them, it could kill your bees

2:33 Always load up the truck before or after. NEVER during. Y'all been warned.
@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney65292 жыл бұрын
Placing foundation in before/during loading or dropping it in after/while supering. Does that clear that up for you? Basically it doesn’t matter the order the main reason is that if you leave that new foundation out too long it loses its odor and is less attractive to the bees.
@londonwerewolves2 жыл бұрын
Crystal clear. In before/during or after/while. Got it.
