Great advice. I'm a surfer transitioning to SUP and your videos are really helping.

Thanks SUP Magazine! Great to hear feedback and I appreciate comments. At 3:58 in this video I said "surf stance" I meant to say "parallel stance".

My shoulders are shot so I’m sup’ing. I took winter off because of one shoulder and not really enjoying my huge beginner sup. My son talked me into going Wednesday and it was 4-6 and I couldn’t make it out to line up. I completely blew my wad and got a cramp. It was also at popular surf spot and I had to do walk of shame . Thanks for the video

LIke the guys who commented before me Clay, really a great tutorial on how to get out particularly in difficult beach breaks like OB. I could tell you were down near Sloat with the water treatment building in the background (Was I correct ???) . This is why I like your videos so much because they focus on water I eventually aspire to surf in. I have been regular surfing this water since the late 70's but I feel like a total beginner kook with the SUP. Your videos give me hope ...hahahaha....Look forward to your next video and hope you do some follow up videos for paddling out through the surf in the future....Rip Lips !

Thanks for the tips. I just transitioned from a longboard to stand up. I love it but it has its own challenges. Frustrating, but I’m getting hooked.

These waves are way above my expertise. For my more modest waves I tend to use a hybrid stance and shift weight back to front. One thing that has worked for me is that I focus on putting the nose of the board just below the wave's peak surface rather than up and over. It keeps my board down, and the weight of the water helps me stay balanced. Just before the white water reaches me I put my blade into the 'meat' of the white water and pull myself forward and through. Still hard work though.

I've always wondered if you could roll a sup over like a male in not to big surf, and just hang underneath. Works on my mal but the volume of a big sup probably prevents using this technique.

Your hand holding the top of the paddle should be level with your shoulder when your reaching out. Any higher and you could pull a muscle out .
