Universal recently revealed the new wearable tech that will allow us to interact with and play in Super Nintendo World. When worn, the "Power Up Bands" will allow guests to punch question bricks to redeem coins, play mini-games around the land, and even team up in boss battles. Universal has filed several patents that seem to explain how the Power Up Bands-and the interactive games themselves-will work when the new land opens at Universal Studios Japan this summer, and other Universal Parks in the following years. Alicia, I have a quick question: with Coronavirus hurting Universal (and Disney) finically, what kind of budget cuts do you think will be made to the parks? Do you think that it will effect major additions, such as the opening of Epic Universe, or maybe even (and hopefully not) scaling back the size of Epic Universe? Or, do you think they will go the route of cutting back short term things, such as temporarily removing entertainment offerings throughout the parks? I’m leaning towards the later, but I’m curious to know what you think!

I really hope they do extensive usability testing on this potentially great interactivity. I've watched videos of folks trying minigames while in SWGE and in-line for Rise of Resistance. It looks like they really work at it, requiring lots of concentration and messing with phone; and sometimes tech or internet access is glitchy. [BTW: its my theory that much of delay in recovering from ride glitches on Hagrid and ROR is caused by usability and user-interface design issues]

It looks like Universal is doing the thing that Disney said they were gonna do for GE, but hasn't done (yet). Disney said that how you do on Smuggler's run would stay with you and it would change how you and the land and the cast members interact with you. That hasn't happened (yet), but it looks like Universal has figured it out!! It's not exactly the same...but similar. Very excited for this land to open!

Really excited to buy the same power up band that Mario wears in the games. ... ... Ok so I really wish they would have done something relevant like interactive gloves or hats. Bands to me are just interactive junk. That being said, I love your content and appreciate what you do.

To me this is like selling a 'magical brick' at WWOHP, then making you buy a non-interactive wand separate. I'm also not sold on the idea of paid optional features they're adding to theme parks. People already spend hundreds to get into park, they could be caught off guard by paid interactive experiences. There could be some confusion... They go to Volcano Bay (or SWGE) and the interactive experiences are free. But Mario is paywalled for some reason? We expect food and merch to cost extra, but to interact with the park, now that's a paid experience? Why not charge for Volcano Bay too? I think this is setting a really bad precedence. At IAAPA they had a booth for a wristband vendor. They had tons of different types of wearables, with some of them having RFIDs. Some of those RFID bands were reusable, similar to the Tapu Tapu at VB. But others were disposable, cheap chips attached to paper bands. Nintendo/Universal could have went this route, handing out cheap chips to everyone, and an upcharge to those who want interactive gloves. But they didn't. Keep in mind, these Mario bands don't even have a display (like Tapu Tapu). Do we even know if they vibrate or have any functionality outside of Universal? I have my Luna Lovegood wand on display near my front door, but a Mario band is going to be stuck in a drawer. That being said I'm totally hyped. Lol.

The problem with these bands, much like Disney's MagicBands, is that they use UHF RFID, which requires power. That being said, these bands will die overtime if they cannot swap the batteries.

They actually describe a method in the patent to get power from an external source to keep the RFID working. I wasn’t sure if they were using it so I left it out, plus the video was already getting pretty long. You can see some of it in the screenshot where I first mention RFID in the video I think.

That's why i prefer UniversalStudio than Disney. Don't get me wrong, Disney do an amazing job on theme park (Pandora is the perfect example) but they also stay in their ComfortZone (Galaxy'sEdge ROTR is not so revolutionary). Universal is more reckless, they always try new things... It sounds amazing on the paper and i don't know how they can manage this system with all the people in the Land at the same time but if they suceed, it could be amazing ! thanks for the video ;)

I wish I was excited for this land..it just kind of looks like an eyesore to me. If you look at Pandora and Galaxy's Edge the lands are beautiful, even Toy Story Land has its appeal..I've yet to see this from Universal beyond Diagon Alley. The great thing about Epic Universe is they have the space to make really cool lands. Maybe Nintendo just isn't the right IP to look appealing, if I was 12 I'm sure it would be more interesting or if it included Pokemon.

Jeff Robert No, these are completely different than magic bands. The similarities end with the fact that they are “bands”. These are meant almost as a “gaming device”, and Magic Bands are meant for more standard/practical things such as storing park tickets and Fast Pass tickets, as well as making purchases throughout the park.
