You do not need NVMe to get 1GB/s, I use 8 x 18TB Seagate EXOS HDDs in RAID 6 for 108TB useable and get just a hair over 1GB/s and that speed is constant and stable, timeline scrubbing with 6.2K BRAW is flawless up to 60FPS. The key to getting high performance HDDs is to optimise the filesystem choice along with the Cluster Size and Stripe Size that best matches your data. For example, the same HDDs using the windows default's achieve around 250MB/s to 300MB/s sustained where as with a few tweaks you get 1GB/s sustained. Where NVMe really shines, and in particular Intel Optane, is Latency and Queue depth. I use the HDDs for storing the footage and an Intel Optane Enterprise U.2 SSD for Cache, Scratch and Render. You can have the best of both worlds, Storage Capacity, Redundancy and Performance, it just requires a little research and understanding of how file systems work.

The benefits of nvme is the fast random read and write that the HDDs can't provide, which is important for video photo editing that use a lot of complex timelines of different assets. For sequential write and read, you're right! :)

Sadly so few motherboards support 10gb. Apple has a much better approach to fast ethernet at this point. Pc seem to be stuck at 2.5gb. I run optical link 10gb which runs much lower power than ethernet, but it requires smb+ which seems to have disappeared on pc's

I am NOT a fan of these low-powered nas boxes. there simply isn't enough pcie to go around for an hba + 10g networking + a few ssd's. I usually prefer to grab something like a xeon-d or epyc embedded. they have typically double the memory channels (4), way more pcie lanes which can be used for networking and nvme storage, and sometimes built-in 10g networking. atom 3000 devices are a little interesting as well as again, many include onboard 10g networking and an ok number of pcie lanes.

I have an infrastructure of 2.5gb and 10gb (x550 IT) the speed in large files are excellent, but smaller files goes down to 10mb/s. so the upgrade is only partial.

Did you use jumbo frames?
@theTechNotice
@theTechNotice 7 ай бұрын
? Jumbo frames?
@kentcurrie7326
@kentcurrie7326 7 ай бұрын
@@theTechNotice Rather than using the normal MTU (maximum transmission unit) of 1500 bytes, you increase the frame (packet) size to be transmitted over a data link. Jumbo frames are somewhere near 9000 bytes. While larger frames can increase throughput for higher data rates, there is no standard. Hence, it is often hardware-dependent. If you didn't use jumbo frames, I would be slightly surprised at your data rates.

I would bet that the pcie switch on the nvme network card is dumb and the fast ssd's were using up too much bandwidth that the 10g nic on the same card was starved for bandwidth. - if it's only 4 pcie lanes, it simply isn't enough bandwidth for all 3 devices being used simultaneously.

If I understand this correctly, (chime in if I'm wrong) 10g doesn't do you any good if your storage isn't fast enough. The fast lane on the Autobahn is useless to you if you're driving a corolla.

I'm not trying to say everyone should DIY their NAS as I know it's not realistic but for the price of that NAS + the expansion card my DIY is capable of 4 u.2 (with the possibility of adding more), 2 m.2 (with the possibility of adding more) 10gb via qsfp+ and the option of going 25 or 40gb. Not to mention up to 16 HD's and 64gb memory. Biggest differences, is its going to eat up more power which I know is a big deal to a lot of people but luckily for me my power is cheap and it's not as small as mine is in a 4u chassis. That said for the price that's a pretty capable unit, have you looked at some of the enterprise 2280's instead of consumer drives out of curiosity? I'm a big fan of solidigm but dwpd on enterprise drives leave pretty much any consumer drive in the dust and it would seem to make sense in a situation where you are going raid 0 for speed (even if it didn't work). Of course given prices consumer drives probably equal out in the end.

Lovely But what about your internet provider and your router Can a internet provider of 2,5gb and a router of 2,5gb give your 10gb ? Can a internet provider of 5gb and a router of 5gb give your 10gb ? Can a internet provider of 10gb and a router of 5gb give your 10gb ? Perhaps we need a internet provider of 10gb with a router of 10gb. Perhaps a 10gb internet service its more expensive and a 10gb router to ?

No idea what you are talking about, but if you are going 10Gbe you shouldn't rely on your ISP provided router for local network switching. In fact you shouldn't use the supplied router at all if you can get away with it.

is SMT different than LAGG 802.3ad then? I haven't decided on a NAS yet. But normally 2 cables in LAGG give you the double bandwidth for multiple devices but the one single device will still only ever get the max of a single cable. Also, im sure you already thought about going with Raid 10 (1+0)? Nice setup though. Trying to decide on drives is what has got me unable to decide on what to do for a NAS for the last few weeks now.
