It was a Mexican stand off of SILENCE. I wasn't going to let IT know whether l am OLD, FEMALE, young, classy, stupid or allow IT to build any form of picture. You can tell a lot by a persons voice and their usage of language. Eventually, IT just hung up after 1 full minute of silence. LET IT GO THROUGH TO MESSAGE BANK FOLKS..... Oh I feel your pain! I just brought an old notebook pc back to life and upgraded the OP from Win.7 to Win.10 and was about to buy a SSD drive for it. Being a 32bit system, I thought about changing it to 64bit so that I could get more RAM than the 4Gb maximum it’s allowed so far. Big problem with that though. The RAM slots are DDR2 and getting 2 chips higher than 2Gb each chip, is bloody difficult! I wanted 16Gb in total at least. But even finding 2 X 4Gb chips is murder. Then I found them but they were over £200! For 8Gb RAM total?! No chance! I might still get the SSD drive, but it doesn’t seem as good an idea now as it first appeared. Graphics is integrated too. But it really gets my dandruff up...I mean, dander up, that DDR2 RAM is dearer than DDR3 or DDR4.

@Donkey Kong may not work in Dual channel coz it's not officially rated as "quad channel" kit.
@dale116dot7
@dale116dot7 5 жыл бұрын
Donkey Kong The sticks are graded for timing and matched for speed. At the speeds that these memory sticks run at, there can be timing differences that make it unstable. This happens if, for example, the setup or hold times are slightly off between two sticks. Those times can be measured at the factory by a test rig and then sticks that match are grouped together. The most pessimism lack of matching could easily make timing differences bad enough that one stick’s data is going away (fast) just as another stick’s is just getting out there (slow). The times are in the order of 0.3 nanoseconds or so.

As mentioned in the video, the slots that work together are colour coded, so if you put another Dual channel kit in the other slots, they should work correctly. In an ideal world, get another of the same dual channel kits, this should ensure compatibility, if they are different but the same spec, normally it's ok, if they are different spec you could get lucky by setting all of the memory to the slowest timings. Normally it works, but sometimes it will drop down to single channel mode.

Question to Everyone with an Example: If I want to buy 16GB of RAM, should I buy 2x8GB RAM at once (2 sticks in the same package(Kit of 2)), or I could by 1x8GB + 1x8GB the exact -same- module RAM (Single Module x 2)? If you didnt understand what I'm talking about then: I'm about to buy a new PC and the problem is the RAM. I'll buy 16GB, DDR4, 2666mhz. To be more specific, this is the model "HX426C13PB3/8". I want to buy HyperX Predator, but there is not "package" with 2x8GB (as the photo at 0:29) but only 1x8GB. So there is not any available option in my country with Kit of 2. There is only the option of 1x8GB HyperX Predator, 2666mhz. ►And the Question is: Is there any problem to buy the SAME RAME 2 times (2x8GB)? Thank you in advance.

Thanks for this video. I thought I understood RAM, but there was a lot I learned from this video. I have an ASUS X58 MOBO acquired in 2010. It came with 3 sticks of 2 GB RAM. I "Upgraded" it by purchasing 1 stick of 4 GB ram and have had stability issues for years that I could not diagnose. I've since purchased 2 more of the same model 4 GB ram and my stability issues seem to have evaporated!

@aluvianknight7754
@aluvianknight7754 9 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Sexton Linus answered this very question in the video. Technicall either will work... most of the time, however the bios will recognize the timings the manufacturer recommends for the ram based on the the number of dims it is selling as a kit.. (so if it is selling 2 sticks of ram, it is best for a dual channel config, if it is 4 then a quad channel. As long as that matches up you can safely assume everything will go as planned 100%) Chances are that if you put 4x4 in dual, you will be fine, but there is a chance the timings will not quite match up to optimal, which could cause a stability issue. So that being said, to be 100% sure it would be best to check to see how many channels your motherboard supports (most support 2, really cheap, like lowest of the low, support 1, some super boards support 3+) and then get the same number of sticks as your channels, so if it is dual channel, get 2 sticks. So that can be 2X4 2x8 or 2xwhatever. I put 4 sticks of 8 in my dual channel board and I did actually have some concerns about the timings, but really have no way to find out if there is any true issue as there are just so many timings and my computer is running fine as far as i can tell.... however.... I can not tell if it is running in dual or if it is being reduced to single. Something I will have to look into better when I get the chance. Now all things considered, if I find out there is an issue all I will likely have to do is manually set each individual timing in the bios, which my bios does allow me to do (i swear there is like 50 timings) to the right spec, assuming I can figure that out, and things will likely be fine./

Hey Linus :) Well i firstly want to say thank you for helping me with all your "Fast As Possible" Videos really taught me a lot of things!!! I was wondering since you said that you should have the same memory in order for it to run at their max performance i was wondering if you could just tell me does it matter in which memory slots you insert the memory? Like i've seen people keep spaces open inbetween their memory when they have 16 2x8Gb. Well i'm building a new PC for myself and this would be the specs MSI Z97 Gaming Motherboard 5 Intel Core i7 4790k 4Ghz and Corsair Vengance 16Gb 2x8gb 1600Mhz and just wanted to make sure how to insert the RAM Correctly and if spaces in between made a difference in performance Such as Dual Channle or Single Channle

I have two dual-channel memory kits; they were made by the same manufacturer and had the same capacity, but they have different heat-sinks so I assume their internals weren’t a complete match. No matter what configuration I put them in on my dual-channel motherboard, they would cause Windows to crash to a blue screen during performance-intensive tasks. There was a good period of time when I was running a flaky system, until eventually I tossed one stick out, and now my blue screens are rarer than a blue moon. I concluded that there was a bad port on the motherboard, since every stick of RAM operated just fine on its own during diagnostics. I’m currently running a 2:1 3×2GB setup, which is stable, but it really bugs me that I can’t bump it up a little more with that lone 2GB stick.

Fun fact that I've experienced. When buying two single channels kits, usually work in dual channel, as long as the part numbers and timings are the same. In other words, two single channel kits with Micron E die, or Samsung B die rated with the same speeds and latency. I don't mean match the Samsung ram with Micron, no. Stay in the same chip family and properties. If you get two separate kits, with differing Frequency and Timings, use the settings for the worst kit for them to function.

Ive populated my memory board with mixed and matched sticks ( 7gb all from Crucial) Same configuration used in two unique machines: System A. AMD FX 8320 Gigabyte - 78LMT AM3+ System B. i7 920 - MSI - X58 Socket 1366 7GB - total 2x2gb 1333 1x 1gb 1066 1x 2gb 1066 (all timings were identical and bought months apart) System stable, no crashes, all ran Correctly in Dual (AMD) and Triple (Intel) channel modes... Was even able to overclock the machines AMD to 4.0 ghz and Intel i7 920 to 3.4 GHZ - Cool and still fully stable. Maybe just lucky in my case, both times. I stand by Crucial Memory for this reason, Ive never had a dead stick or an issue with them, ever.

I'm DIMM. I still don't know what is best. Say I have a dual channel board but 4 slots. That means I "can" run 4 sticks in a dual dual set up right? If so, what is better...the dual dual 4x4 or a single dual with 2x8? Question 2 would be if 4x4 is better should I buy 2 packs of 2 or 1 pack of 4? Finally, if 4x4 is better in a dual channel mobo with 4 slots would it be EVEN better to look for a quad channel mobo? Just so I can say I TRIED to understand. I think the answer would be 4x4, 2 packs of 2 and yes.

Tahir Butt is always better 2x4gb than 1x8gb, by the other hand is not recommended to put two different modules. Remember you need the same frequency (Mhz) on both modules.

@RalphRomano2
@RalphRomano2 6 жыл бұрын
You would do MUCH better to install the 1600 mhz speed ram. You can adjust the setting to utilize the newer speed. Even though they post limits on the documentation, you can over-ride them in the bios. AND you can gain speeds in other ways too. You can lower the wait states to gain performance without increasing the speed. That will also offer you another way to get more performance. I have build over 1000 machines, and I am a board designer. Good Luck

Hey Lynus, Do you mean for a CPU and Motherboard set, one channel is assigned to one memory slot? And that is why single channel meaning single memory stick? And dual channel means using two memory sticks? I can see several single memory sticks with dual channel support which is kind of different from what you mentioned or mentioned by all other youtubers (mostly, as I can't check all videos). What is 1Rx16 or 2Rx8 for a single memory stick then? May I ask you to please explain a bit more on this topic in detail. Thanks

+iFLIP★07 i think what he's saying is that when using a kit of 4 ram sticks, its more eficiant if they were all on the same channel (i.e. quad channel board) and thus in a dual channel board they might not be as efficiant.
@zlatankovacevic4281
@zlatankovacevic4281 8 жыл бұрын
ackly14 it's not about efficiency. He plain simply says that quad channel memory might not work properly on dual channel board (mobo might fail to initialize memory's configuration automatically as it should) and might give you some hustle (configuring dozen of memory parameters by yourself).

Goran Jankovic excep that makes no sense as he said just earlier, that quad channel memory would work fine as dual channel memory. so why cant one quad channel memory set be split up into two dual channel sets? they should work just fine i would think.

I bought an awesome PC in 2010 which is still a powerhouse, except I've only got 6GB of RAM, and the motherboard has a friggin _triple channel set-up_ - and NO ONE sells triple channel kits anymore, at least in my country (looks like they're rare now everywhere...) So what's the best solution for triple channel motherboards now? Just buy three separate sticks from a single model? Buy a quad-channel kit and subtract one? Are there specific models geared for this sort of thing on the market right now? What sort of troubles could I run into?
@GratedArseCheeks
@GratedArseCheeks 10 жыл бұрын
Work out which is cheaper, Look around for a triple channel kit, if you cant find one, go for a quad channel and subtract one (maybe sell it on ebay/local computer shop) if a quad channel is not an option or it is too expensive, go for a dual and a single channel rated at the same size and speeds and same brand (this setup is the least desired and may not run optimally)

The effects of mismatching RAM is almost entirely up to the motherboard. I have 4 sticks of RAM in my board, 3 of them are the same at 1333MHz with a CL of 9 and another at 1333MHz with a CL of 8. My board set the latency of all of them to 9. On top of this, all of my ram is overclocked to 1600MHz with a 0.05v boost, and my CPU is overclocked. All this being said, my board is still confirmed running in dual channel. Try doing this on an OEM computer and you'll likely get some issues. Like I said, the board makes a big difference.

I'm still unclear on one thing. In a scenario with a dual channel motherboard and a target RAM total of 16GB, which is more advisable, disregarding budget? 4x4GB sticks populating all slots and both channels, or 2X8GB sticks seated in only 2 slots across a single channel? I'm solely interested in which configuration would yield a better performance, however minuscule.

Hi please please anyone answer me a question. This is more of a server question with quad channel architecture. However I am also interested to know how this would also work in other dual and triple configurations. The same principals would apply. Is it possible to bottleneck a RAM config? So for example channels ABCD all have matching 16GB sticks of RAM but then channels A,B also have an extra 8gb stick each in their next available slots. I was taught that each channel needs to be identical for the architecture to work in “parallel” in a multi channel environment. Are those extra chips effectively bottlenecking the server IF the first 64gb (however unlikely) is succeeded??? A- 16GB, 8GB. C-16GB. B-16GB, 8GB. D-16GB. My understanding lead me to believe that once the first 64GB is used the system would still try to work in quad channel but as there are only 2 sticks then issues would occur. Is this right or wrong?

So I have a LGA-2011 Motherboard, but I'm working on a tight budget, and right now, I can only afford one stick of RAM. I intend to upgrade later, and the Motherboard has a maximum capacity of like 128 GB, and like 8 slots... I believe the slots feature two colors, blue, and grey. I assume this is 2 quad channels? Obviously i know VERY little about motherboards and RAM. So yeah, will one 8GB card ruin anything, or will it be safe to use?
