I always enjoy Techquickie, but I thought this video was particularly well done and on point. Since working professionally in the data erasure field, it has been surprising how little even fairly tech savvy people understand about how computer files work and what happens to them when they are "deleted". Just emptying the Recycle Bin or Trash or deleting even on mobile devices is not enough. The data has to be OVERWRITTEN, to truly be gone and irrecoverable. Like Linus said, overwriting occurs when the operating system in its natural course of running writes new files over where the previous files are located. Reinstalling the OS and just hoping the previous files get overwritten is usually insufficient because drives are large enough these days that it could take quite some time for the OS to get back to writing data to a particular sector. You can test this for yourself by deleting some files on your computer or device and then using one of theses tools to recover those "deleted" files: *Recuva (Windows)- www.piriform.com/recuva * DiskDigger (Android) - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.defianttech.diskdigger&hl=en *Disk Drill (MacOS) - www.cleverfiles.com/ * Recover My Files (Professional, Windows) - www.recovermyfiles.com/ These are some tools that will force overwrites and truly purge data (along with the OS and everything else): * DBAN (Free; outdated, no SSD support) - dban.org/ * KillDisc (Free/Freemium) - www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm *WipeDrive (Paid; professional) - www.whitecanyon.com/consumer-wipedrive

You should have mentioned, that file systems do that, to increase drive's lifespan (either HDD or SDD). Every time you write a bit on a drive, it has a chance, that that bit could just die. Chance, that this would happen would be increased significantly, if all these bits would be overwriten every time a user or system deletes a file

Unfortunately, there is a very good chance that even the strongest permanent magnet would do very little to the data on a hard drive. Most permanent magnets (even the really strong ones) have a coercivity (resistance to magnetic chance) of only around 2000 (which is really strong by the way). Commercial degausers are usually around 4000-5000. Modern hard drives, by comparison, are usually around 5000 - 8000 coercivity. How do you even write to a drive then? Well, it all comes down to the size of the actual magnetic particles on the media. Hard drives write to microscopic sized areas, and use pretty powerful electromagnets concentrated down to that microscopic size to get the job done. Applying a very powerful field to the entire drive would likely damage some data, but I don't know you could guarantee that every single bit of data were destroyed. It's worth noting that even if you manage to wipe the magnetic data completely without destroying the drive housing, you would render the drive useless. Currents induced in the read/write head, motor coils, and rotary voice coils would likely destroy the electronics, and even if that doesn't kill it, the servo data on the drive is written at the factory, and never again, so the drive wouldn't be able to position the read/write head on the platters any more. One work around to this if you wanted to destroy the data magnetically and didn't care about the drive, is to heat the drive up before applying the magnetic field. Like, to 400 or 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This drastically reduces the coercivity of the platters, and will make it easy to destroy the data with any reasonably strong magnet.

So, here is my question. I was already aware of all of this. However, the one part that doesn't make sense to me is how *multiple* iterations of writing data (lets say all 0s) is more beneficial than doing it just once. I mean, if you write all 0s to a drive, wouldn't the result be the same in the end: a drive with all 0's written to it? How is a drive which had all 0s written to it once less secure than a drive that had all 0s written to it 4 times?
@elijaht32232 жыл бұрын
From my understanding, overwriting all bits with 0 will still leave magnetic trace that can be read. To confuse the hardware, pseudorandom overwrites of 0s and 1s will allegedly mask that.

There are actually a few other methodes of how to permanently shredder files: You can overwrite the file with a text document containing only 0s filling up just as much space as the previous file did, this is very common practice but not un-restorable. The next ones are 3 and 7 pass algorithms. 3 pass does the same thing like the 0 method in the first step, in the second step it overwrites the data with all ones and in the third step with random data. 7 pass algorithms do the same first two steps and use the remaining 5 steps to overwrite it with random data. One of the last noteworthy things is secure erase which overwrites all of the data with 0s but tells the hard drive not to execute the files split over specific sections.
@MaxArceus8 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't simply making a 2 tb sized txt file with only 0s whipe a 2 tb hdd?
@Finkelfunk8 жыл бұрын
MaxArceus Believe it or not, this is used as a common method. But the thing about it is that it takes quite a long time and you still might find residues of data. Using the above methods basically renders the data unusable the same way your technique would do and it usually takes a lot less time.
@MaxArceus8 жыл бұрын

actually, those magnets in a hard drive are specially designed so that they would not damage the hard drive, with either a piece of metal in between, of which dampens the magnetic field, or a unique pole structure, which limits the extent of it's magnetic field (two north and south poles)

If you are giving your computer to someone else and it is running Windows 10, it is a *very* good idea to factory or hard reset your computer. The option to do this can be found in the Windows 10 settings app. When doing this, Windows will give you two options. The first will just clear the ‘master table’ (as mentioned in the video). One of the options will properly destroy your data and it is clearly marked for if you are giving the computer to someone else.

You should probably add a notation stating that overwriting data with random bits only really works the way you expect it to on a magnetic disk drive. Actual overwrites on a solid state drive happens when the controller says they need to happen. The controller dictates which blocks are actually utilized, because it also needs to do wear leveling. It needs to make sure that all the blocks are used with the same frequency so that the SSD works well over time. This means that you as a user don't really have total control over when you're overwriting old data. For an SSD, there are other options. ATA Secure Erase for example, will deliver a voltage spike to the cells, effectively flushing the data out, leaving no trace behind. This will slightly reduce drive lifespan.

If you have CCleaner then *permanently removing* files you have *already deleted* is as simple as *Tools* > *Drive wiper* > Wipe: free space only, security: your choice. This basically *overwrites random data* on to any parts of the drive that *aren't registered in the master file table*, so as long as it's *not part of an easily accessible file, it's gone*. Keep in mind that, as helpful as they are, higher security levels take longer to complete, and may take a huge amount of time if the drive has a lot of free space. Just make sure to leave your computer on while it's running (you can use it normally). Also word of warning: *do not forget to set it to wipe free space only!!!* I, Piriform, or anyone else involved will *not* be held responsible if you accidentally delete all the data off your drive.

There are file-shredding software's as well - which will overwrite random bits multiple times over the location of the files you wish to shred - and then remove the reference.

Probably should have put the fractal design logo somewhere on the screen while doing the sponsor spot for the subliminal effect.

CCleaner (which everyone should have) has empty sector wiping functionality. You can set it to overwrite all the empty data on a drive 1-10 times. 3 is usually enough.

if that outro was done in one take. you are really good at memorizing lines. actually fuck it. even if that took like 10 takes you are really good at remembering lines.

On Macintosh computers, you can "safely erase" the trash, which, I believe, overwrites the data with 7 passes. Without knowing exactly how it works, I assume it registers where on the drive this data is located, then rewrites placeholder data in its place, 7 times over before clearing the space. Of course 7 passes CAN be reconstructed, but it's much more difficult. I do think there's some Disk Utility feature that allows for the highly secure 35 passes though.
