Neat keyboard and mouse pad placements are mostly only good for photo ops. Once you start using it, it has to go all over the place again. And if in the first example, you start routing cables thru cable coils, it's gonna be an inconvenience. I've done it myself, so speaking from experience.

fyi- on the fan issue, some cases with the vents so low to a surface they are useless as intake and blowing through the vent would bring in more air. As exhaust, they work just as good as anywhere else in that case. I know, old hats like to quote heat rises but in an enclosure, air goes where you direct it, especially with 5 or more fans placed on three or more ventilation/exhaust points. Watch super builds on CES or Computex and you'll see that done often.
