I don't need a phantom 4 I own a phantom 3 professional and with the Litchi app, I can get miles on waypoints I even fly out of signal lost, it estimates the time the mission will take, I can go on and on, but thanks again guy. best app ever

Active track without obstacle avoidance is useless, that and the 10' radar vs 30' and finally dual IMU and compass compared to the P3P, I'll stay with my decision to return the P3 and love my P4 By the way, I flew over 3 miles in a lousy with wiFi area teaming with noise, I can outfly the battery, and when I land in back yard while sitting in AC, the obstacle avoidance radar assist in instrument landing with distance markers on screen, and knowing altitude from 25' up vs having to be within 3 meters, is also huge. I can see why upgrading for some ppl isn't really worth it, to me and others it is/was. To be fair I have 4 different antenna setups, and Sunhans amps and other goodies like ultra low loss cables for signals, but I have 2 million feet traveled in 4 months, 1 million in last 2 weeks, knock on wood my P3 flew awesome, and my P4 flies when better, with marginally better camera, and sport mode with real Active trac makes it a better deal the the typhoon H, which I like to

Ifrostify ok you just said it takes 15 minutes ine,way flight if that is true then a,round trip would be 30 minutes depending on the wind witch is not possible with the fantom professional or standards I barely get that with my fantom 4 .also by sending it on a mission means you have no signal and no control so there is no way from keeping it from running into something because you have no sensors on the front only the bottom .very dangerous. But with the fantom 4 I get great range and have full control in case something happens but the sensors on the front helps it to avoid things and fly up and over them

+steve espinoza Do you still see your drone if it is half a mile away? Because in most countries it is only allowed to fly it within line of sight, which makes sense, because you don't want to be responsible for the death of people, if your done causes a helicopter crash or car traffic accident.

Wow you're right it is extremely reckless using the waypoint missions. Any number of things could happen mid flight and with no one at the controls disastrous things can happen. I personally only fly within line of sight for safety reasons. I really don't think Litchi should be creating software that could potentially be such a danger. The what ifs are far to great in this case. I just wish everyone could understand the importance of flying within the FAA guidelines. If we don't play by the rules soon we won't be able to play at all.
@ChadWade12174
@ChadWade12174 8 жыл бұрын
You can easily take control back by just flipping to switch from F to P. This will stop the waypoint mission and just hover there and you have control of it again.
@JasonScarboro
@JasonScarboro 8 жыл бұрын
+Chad Wade True but if you are outside of the video transmission range how would you know trouble is about to happen? I'm only speaking of those that do long range flights passed their line of site and outside of their signal range. This capability of the app is very reckless and irresponsible. It would be one thing if the mission is programmed over a baron landscape or water. Worse that can happen is you lose you drone but people are mapping mission over populated areas where anything can happen. It's just not safe and the fail safe of flipping switch does nothing when you can't see what is going on.
@ChadWade12174
@ChadWade12174 8 жыл бұрын
That is true. I agree with you. Just setting a mission where you don't have visual contact is reckless because you can't see what your drone is doing. I always keep visual contact with my drone when I sett up my mission with Litchi. That way flipping the switch you can take control.
@JasonScarboro
@JasonScarboro 8 жыл бұрын
+Chad Wade I know there are a lot of responsible pilots like yourself out there unfortunately there are way to many irresponsible pilots too. It's only gonna take one big accident for use all to suffer the consequences. I myself also only fly within line of sight and I don't think my videos suffer at all. In some cases I've started filming in one area and then moved to a second to be able to capture more footage. Check out some of my videos and I'll check out some of yours.

I love "Waypoint" with my Litchi controlled P3S!!! I also have the ARGtek antennas system, so my P3S will do anything I want now, within the 20 minutes the battery will last that is. I use topo maps of my area to make sure I don't crash into something while it's on a "Mission". I haven't tried the RTG thing yet, but maybe the Summer of 2018. A friend of mine has had the P3S and switched to a 4K P4P since he uses it for filming commercials on TV. He wishes he hadn't sold his P3S because of all the fun he had with it! He's also been telling me the tricks and tips he used with his Litchi controlled P3S, like "Course Lock" and Home Lock" for the earlier filming he did. I, of course, don't film commercials, I just love to see the world from a "Birds Eye View"! I bought a refurbished P3S just before Christmas of 2017 for only $398 and it's been perfect! Does anything I want with the Litchi app that I paid $24.99 for just before Christmas too! I watched this video back in November of 2017 and it was a BIG part of my research into the DJI drones. I didn't comment back then, but I am now to tell you ... Thank you for making this video, it pretty much made my mind up to go for the lower cost P3S instead of going into debit with a much more expensive drone. Keep up the good work!

He failed to mention the range/ signal is improved on the P3/adv & pro and also the P4, because they use lightbridge. Litchi doesn't replace that. Its not even a good alternative to 'enhance' the P3 standard. If you want more 'bang for your buck', consider flipping your Standard for an Advanced or higher on ebay. Way better option then flying blind with litchi like this tool suggests! Ive flown over 2.175 miles out with full signal (using litchi only to bypass the distance limit of the dji go app). But you need the hardware, before you can fully utilize the software. Basic Computing 101!

This is truly a GREAT Video! I've not seen new original content for a long time. You have made a VERY compelling argument. I myself own a Phantom 3 Pro, and I've decided NOT to buy another drone until they have truly perfected 360-degree obstacle avoidance. I was familiar with Litchi before seeing your video and I think it's one of the best apps hands down. You did not mention this but with Litchi you can do even MORE than the Phantom 4, it's got so many new functions. I know this video was made in 2016 but keep up the good work brother!

In case you miss the correction in the video, the Phantom 3 Pro and Advanced have equal or GREATER range than the P4. I agree a lot with his assessments. the camera is not better enough and I would rather have the obstacle avoidance feature in the sides or rear.... I can see fine in the front. I am sure the "P5" will have 360 degree avoidance... and that will be very useful.

+Techy Agent correct, the P3S & P34K are based on a wifi connection whereas the P3P & P3A use Lightbridge. I agree with you, I have the P3P and probably won't upgrade until they significantly improve the camera. If u know how to fly or use Litchi, thinks like Tap to Fly aren't that important. As far as being risky with the drone, I guess DJI Care could help with that.

I know this video is old but has just reaffirmed a decision I made. I was going to pull the trigger on a Phantom 4 Pro but just as you was getting squeamish about the expensive investment. So, I found an awesome deal on Craigslist from a really great guy. Phantom 3 Advanced, antenna mod, four batteries, 12 props, hard back pack, Ipad mini, Fat Shark Dominator V3 goggles, Polar Pro filters, landing leg extenders, and a few other goodies........$800.00. Adult owned, pristine condition and never abused. Tons of people were trying to lowball him with $500.00 and certainly did not know the value of all of these things or just trying to rip him off. I already own a Mavic Pro, but wanted a larger drone and do not need 4k, since the Mavic Pro already has it. Thanks for the Litchi suggestion and am going to get it for the Phantom. Fair points regarding the comparisons between the 3 and 4 .... but you completely missed the enhanced controller. The P4 standard has the basic controller. And speaking from experience the enhanced controller makes life a whole lot easier.
@TechyAgent

+acgkplh this is true... The title is a little bit of "click bait" admittedly. My only real point is that Litchi adds certain functionality to the p3 that may be enough for some to hold off buying the p4 for now. The advanced and professional controllers are better than the standard controllers (as you mentioned). That's one aspect where my argument falls apart, among others.

+Techy Agent it depends on the user experience. my P4 gets the same distances as my P3 Advanced, BUT the P3 gets better distances in a more "in town" type environment than the P4. P4 appears to be affected by congested / populated areas when it comes to range. When I performed some tests out of town in the country they were identical in range, but the P3 won in town, beating the he P4 by several thousand feet.

Three years ago, all this was true, and I have the Litchi App and use it. However, I have gone thru 3 Phantom 3 Pro birds. Trees eat them and they don't float. I have decided to piece together a P4P from parts off e-bay. It still won't float, but the trees are going to have to jump to get my drone now.

One correction that I would note. You do have follow me mode on the P3 advanced and Pro. It uses the gps in your monitor though, so you need to used a tablet with GPS, or a smart phone for your monitor. I think the Litchi works better, but the DJI go software does have it's version of it.

@Techy Agent: You made some good and valid points about getting a cheaper $500 standard model vs getting the Phantom 4 Which for those looking to spend a little less. The new tracking feature in the Phantom 4 is WAY better then Litchi's app feature. Sure the tracking feature in the new Phantom isn't perfect but it can still move around while tracking/following the subject. Litchi cannot do this. The camera is the only thing that will move. This may be a HUGE limitation for some people and a rude surprise for anyone who's watching when they come home install the app and find this out. Again, your video is great and shows some great ways to make the DJI Phantom 3 a better buy for many people looking to save $$. Keep up the great work~

+liquidSpin good point made, thanks for clarifying. There is a way to "trick" the drone on the litchi app to follow you on the move, I may do a follow up video showing this feature. Thanks again for the comments and clarification, I think it's helpful to anyone who reads it

Get a P4. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The camera is better, battery life is better, sensors are better, redundant gps and imu to avoid connection issues, longer range ( not a 1 way mission). Litchi is ok, but not as refined as DJI Go.
@TechyAgent

+Sean Ozz do what you feel is right for you and your budget. The P3 Lightbridge range is actually starting to show that it is better than the P4 range, at least according to preliminary tests done by other KZbin reviewers. The Litchi app isn't as refined, but it offers more. Plus, why not use both apps depending on the context. For me, whenever I want to have manual control, I use the DJI GO app. Whenever I want to use an automated feature, I use the Litchi app

You can get a refurb Phantom 3 standard for $359 delivered. Then get the insurance for only $129 and you are about as mint to go as possible. The Litchi App will probably negate the warranty/insurance, but the range extenders start at only $30 and add up to 1-2k more feet to the distance and some people are saying they can get nearly 1.5 miles or more before losing contact. I just got mine and wish I could find a place for cheap batteries without buying used ones that could be screwed up.

Hey Eric, new sub here! I just wanted to say thanks for posting such an informative video on the Phantom 3. I've spent the past 4 months training with lower priced drones in order to polish up on my flying skills before I move forward with a more expensive device. I'm in the process of starting my own aerial photography business and will actually be purchasing a Phantom 3 Advanced tomorrow. I've been going back and forth in regards to spending 1400 bucks on the P4, compared to 800 on the P3 Advanced and it's been videos like yours that have helped to sway me into going with the less expensive model. Granted, if the Phantom 5 was coming out in a few weeks and I knew the P4 would be significantly dropping in price, I might hold off and go with the P4, but I figured with this being my first drone over 200 bucks, I may as well go with the P3 and spend the extra couple hundred bucks I would save, and purchase some extra batteries and perhaps the extended landing gear. In your opinion, if you had to purchase your P3 again and you had the option of purchasing the Phantom 3 Standard, the P3 4K version, or the advanced, which device would you go with? I intentionally left out the P3 Professional simply because you can now purchase the P4 for just over the P3 Pro's price point. Also, do you find that the props on your P3 get in the way very often while shooting video, or is it really a non-issue as long as you keep your camera angle adjusted? The reason I ask is because I've seen a number of P4 videos that have shown the props in view as well, so I'm assuming this is easily remedied in flight and shouldn't be a concern? Sorry for such a long comment! Thanks again and I look forward to following your work moving forward!
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 8 жыл бұрын
+MrChris if I had to do over, I would go for the p3 advanced because of the better camera and better controller range. When I bought my standard, it was $700 and the other drones were $1000 or more so I couldn't afford them. Yes, sometimes the props will get into the shot. But as long as you are shooting in 4K (or in my case 2k), you can always crop the video just a little to remove the props and you will still have an HD image quality. I notice props show up when I first begin to fly in a certain direction or if I'm flying into a headwind.

Thanks for the video. Seriously considering this app. The only thing holding me back is I wonder about reliability. Have you heard about any data on reliability? I'm concerned about things like the app crashing during flight, fly-offs, and so on. I feel like DJI polished their app pretty well and it's well tested. I just don't know anything about this app and if there are any dangers/risks there.
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 8 жыл бұрын
+Mikey C if the app crashes during take off or landing, you will still have manual control over the drone with your controller. If the app crashes while your drone is out performing an automated flight, it will still complete the mission that is uploaded to the drone, and if the drone does detect any anomalies, it will simply return to what ever saved home point you have selected. Most cases of crashes are user error, and in cases where it's not, there usually has to be several safety features that fail. So for example, even if the app and controller quit working, the drone should return to home automatically, and engage in an automated landing once the battery depletes to a certain point. I've got over 100 flights with the Litchi app now, and I haven't had any close calls. So while my perspective is certainly subjective to the experience of others, I personally feel that it's very reliable.

No, not height. How far away you can go away from the controller. Or where the home point was set.
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 8 жыл бұрын
+Shannon Chavez if you want to retain manual control, the distance away from the controller depends on many factors including obstructions, wind, humidity, etc. I've had it up to about half a mile away from the controller. If you do an automated flight, there is no restriction on the distance you can fly from the controller. If you wanted to, you could program the drone to fly several miles away, but obviously it wouldn't have enough battery power to return home
