Thank you so much for posting this video. I have the same machine and ran into problems similar to yours, although my angles from the factory were worse in a few spots from yours. I did something similar to yours with marking the correct angles, and now I am happy with it but I was ready to throw it in the trash. Thanks again.

I have this grinder but it does not have issues of being using good Machinist quality tools to check it I find it is spot on. However I did grab a plastic protractor like the one he's using in the video and it shows that being about six degrees off but when I checked that protractor to a good machinist it is definitely an error in the plastic protractor. And I am not saying that is what he is seeing lots of plastic protectors are spot on also it is quite possible that the grinder he is checking is a Chinese clone and not brand name.

Now if you add or subtract the 10 degree down angle for your full chisel chain, is the tooth ground to the same angle as the witness mark on the tooth? Mine is way off.

Yes, after fixing all of the issues and grind the teeth evenly on the left and right hand side cutters.

Yes, it is but that was only after centering the vice. In other words, if you have the same grinder after you find the true 0° on the turntable ,stick a straight ruler in the vice and clamp it down as if it was a chain. Set the top plate angle at 90° after finding true 0° pull the handle down the center of the rule should be in the center of the bolt that holds the wheel in place if that makes sense.. you may have to slide the 10° down angle forwards or backwards, so that the bolt that holds the wheel is aligned perfectly with the center of the rule that would be true 0° .Oregon has a good video demonstrating this on one of their channels. The issue is if you are not centered, it will grind a slightly different angle positive on one side and negative on the other, which makes the chain cut erratically and in a curve. After finding true zero with the rule, either re-mark the scale or slide the scale over so that zero is truly zero if you can’t figure it out, I can make another video when I get some time let me know. Good luck.

I got an Oregon that slides back and forth to get your wheel centered with the slide rule . it also has a separate adjustment for the ten degree to and from like you demonstrated with that northern tool grinder. I hope what you said eliminates your problem. I think I still see issues. I have noticed you.van get inaccurate degree readings that dont correlate with the marker I own 4 of them. The one I had the most trouble with was the knock off one I bought new here for about $100. You got to be vigilant with the knock offs. Everyone buys them then talks about how sharp there chain is. CHECK the teeth on your chain they will make your chain sharp regardless of the angle . the real test is both your right and left hand cutters the same length and same degree. Ill say this second isn't the industry standard in my opinion but you can make them all cut right if you follow what you say. Well most of them I'm not so sure about the ones you get from harbor freight .

@@rc391995 yes, I saw that model that you have that has the independent centering adjustment I wish I had that one ha ha but Like I said, mine does not have that so in order to compensate for it, I just made my new zero on the scale after using the rule trick, that Oregon shows and offset it so that I could get the 10° down angle. It was definitely frustrating at first and I was missing my old Sylvie from 1993 when I began sharpening chains. But it seems to work great now. When the problems started becoming obvious when I first received it I wondered why they didn’t have an independent centering device on it and then I saw that they did make one which is the model that you’re talking about. my Oregon burned out and I got this as a Christmas gift. I believe it was around $220 or so. I have not had any issue with the cutters being different lengths. It cuts straight and it cuts fast. If I was buying one myself again, I probably would’ve bought the higher end Oregon but like I said, this was a gift and it just took some time to get it working properly.

Yes, this is not the high dollar one that Oregon brands. This one was around $240.
