I was never an NFL watcher, so I had never heard of Lawrence Taylor until he appeared on WWF TV.
@jaythor70 Жыл бұрын
He had done it with Mr. T, which laid the ground work for WWF, but there had been other pro football players who crossed over. Ernie Ladd, Wahoo McDaniels, and Bronko Nagurski had all been big names in football before adding pro wrestling. It wasn't a total leap of faith on Vince's part.

It wouldn't work for just any football player, but it helped that Lawrence Taylor was one of the most feared and hard-hitting football players to play the game, and the reputation was well established by then even though he was in the twilight of his NFL career. WWF was bottomed out at the time while struggling with viewership and they had to try something to move the needle.

It's crazy that a guy who was arguably the greatest defensive player to ever play the game...is barely known by the future generations of NFL fans I hate to say it, but a huge chunk of this falls on him. He has had so much legal trouble over the years, he never got a chance to have a "second career." Look at Randy Moss. The dude has totally reinvented himself as a broadcaster. LT was never able to do that
@shiningphantasy1393 Жыл бұрын
@@skippythealien9627 Another reason may be that the NFL has softened up a lot in the name of player safety and has heavily slanted the game towards the offense over the last decade, so defensive enforcers of the past like Lawrence Taylor don't get highlighted regularly. You'll never see them showing old Steve Atwater highlights anymore either. To your point, I think that same can be said for Reggie White, that most in the present don't have a good idea of his impact on the game.
@skippythealien9627 Жыл бұрын
@@shiningphantasy1393 man totally unrelated but it's ridiculous that it took a decade for Steve Atwater to get into the Hall of Fame Hell, i'm a Bears fan and I fucking loathe the Packers, but Leroy Butler taking a decade to get in is fucking ridiculous too

@@skippythealien9627 Even though I'm a Minnesotan and have been a Vikings fan for the last 27 years or so, I grew up from my youth cheering for Elway and the Broncos from the mid-eighties through the late-nineties. So yeah I watched a lot of Steve Atwater and he should have been inducted in a shorter period of time; he and Dennis Smith were a big-hitting Safety duo back then, even though Dennis Smith could go a bit dirty with his tactics from time to time.

Man, let those pro wrestlers bitching line up against an NFL offensive or defensive line and see who still has something to say. Taylor was a real athlete in a real sport
@jd9119 Жыл бұрын
If you want to talk notoriety, how many PPV buys came because LT was on the card? How many people bought tickets to be there live, because LT was on the card? Nobody. So it was bad business to have him on there. Nobody in the mainstream was going to care about wrestling and nobody who cares about wrestling was going to care that LT (or any sports player) was going to be there.
@ThielsArtwork8 ай бұрын
He was the damn main event against bam bam and they set it up by having bam bam push LT while he was in the crowd at a previous ppv. Me and my dad never watched football ever but we seen that push and we watched the ppv live. LT sold that ppv. The guy was underpaid if anything.

Lol. The resentment was because Taylor was a legitimate athlete and could draw BIG MONEY on his name alone.
