Well said Ted! Today's wrestling fans don't know about having good ring charisma & working "style". Man i miss the territory days.

Wrestling is way better today. Especially when you don’t have so many wrestlers dying before 40 like the “good ol days”

Tommy Rich mentioned that he did get to wrestle in Madison Square Garden for the WWF back in the early 80s. He didn't want to go, but Jim Barnett convinced him by telling him that wrestling in the Garden would be a once in a lifetime experience. Tommy sad he wrestled Johnny Rodz, but didn't say who won. Jake Roberts talked about his time as a booker in Georgia during 1983/84. He said he had big plans to put Tommy Rich back on top, but, according to Jake, Buzz Sawyer and Tommy Rich left the territory because they didn't like Jake being the booker.

What people don’t realize is growing up in the territory days every territory had their Hulk Hogan. Von Erich’s in world class Jerry Lawler in Memphis and Tommy Rich in Georgia. He was huge. When cable came out it was expensive so after a couple years is was more affordable and my Dad and mom got it. The little studio crowd for Saturday morning and Saturday night was always loud. But they really popped when Tommy Rich came out!

Tommy Rich's good old boy gimmick went over big down in the South. I don't believe Tommy Rich would have worked out in the WWF. It just wasn't a good fit. Jake Roberts has a lot of nerve talking guys getting loaded.

Tommy Rich only really ever got over in Georgia. In Georgia, he was able to overcome his limitations by charisma, good work, good interviews and favorable booking. But his size anywhere else was going to be held against him. And when he got older, there was also less appeal. There were alot of other guys like him that couldn't get beyond a certain level for the same reasons. Specifically in the WWE, he wasn't going to get in due to his size. And Jake Roberts is not anyone to be critical of another guy for their drinking.

@@Jim-Tuner That's like saying Austin was a big as Hogan only in 98. Lol. Tommy Rich was quite popular since 1978 or 1979. His peak was like in 1980 and 81. But Tommy was a huge deal till 83 or 84 till he was in GCW. He was a top draw and a huge star at Hogan, Rock or Austins level.
@bourbon646
@bourbon646 7 ай бұрын
@@Jim-TunerI didn't get the limitation part. Tommy had everything and was also a good worker. If Tommy was a bad worker, then I have no clue what a good worker means. In WWF post Hogan, Tommy would never get a push. NWA during that time could have crowned him as a champion. Tommy would have been over with good booking anywhere. He had the likeability. It would take a while. He was huge in georgia. Outside he would have to get good booking as well as belts. Hogan wasn't himself over everywhere. Flair also wasn't over everywhere. But WWF and NWA took a chance as they had the look and gimmick that could sell. After 1990 its difficult to see Tommy as a top guy. He could have been a WCW champion beating Flair in the late 80s. Maybe 1 or 2 runs because Rich was a good worker and could work with anyone.

Very unfortunate that Tommy Rich was slowly destroyed by substance abuse. Some said it was injuries, others said it was peer pressure which got him hooked. He was a very talented wrestler popular in the South. But sometimes things don't work out as planned in life.

@@PassivePortfolios What’s your idea of destruction? He’s almost 70 and still on his first marriage. Kids and grandkids seem to be doing fine. Wildfire still makes some appearances because he enjoys it and fans are still paying for his stuff. No prison time or multiple unsuccessful rehab visits. His mental state is beyond that of the current president (but so it a rutabaga). He’s not destitute and hasn’t done any of those “raise funds from your fans” things. In pro wrestling, he was a draw for years, world champion and more. Destroyed? You should be so lucky to face such destruction.

Tommy got over in Georgia and Memphis as well as having a good run in Continental.As he got older he frankly didn’t keep hisself in the best of shape and his fondness for bleeding didn’t help his good looks.Yes he sometimes worked drunk in the ring cause I met him once and he reeked of beer.Nice guy though.Good wrestler that probably should have been a top guy for probably ten years more than he was but I don’t think he handled his fame well.

Tommy liked beer and other things for sure. NEVER heard of Tommy being drunk in the ring . Not many better workers in the ring period. Past or present. What's this guy's problem with Tommy ? Tommy could give a promo almost as good as Flair or anyone else. This dude needs to do at least some reaserch. Rich didn't want to work up north. He had the opportunity. Maybe to stay away from characters who don't know what they are talking about.
