He never had a healthy role model until Lasso showed up, so when he finally found some success, he manifested himself the only way he knew how: an egotistical bully. He clearly has issues with self-image and confidence, his parents don't take him seriously at all. That entire monologue in the last episode hurt so much, it was so clear he was, more than anything, trying to convince himself than to stick it to Ted.

Furthermore, football does help with the popularity of the show but at the end of the day the show is about people who just happen to be in or associated with a fictional premier league club. In terms of popularity sure the show wouldn’t have such appeal if it wasn’t football, but it would be just as good regardless of which sport the show focused on.
