Pakistani educator Ziauddin Yousafzai reminds the world of a simple truth that many don't want to hear: Women and men deserve equal opportunities for education, autonomy, an independent identity. He tells stories from his own life and the life of his daughter, Malala, who was shot by the Taliban in 2012 simply for daring to go to school. "Why is my daughter so strong?" Yousafzai asks. "Because I didn't clip her wings."

NAFIZ HAFIZ I am currently reading Malala's biography and believe or not her father used to stutter a lot when younger but somehow overcame it, his breakthrough was when he joined a public speaking competition, despite his stutter, he practiced for hours and although he was nervous, that day he delivered his speech very well and everyone was impressed and for the first time he really made his father proud.

Hearing him describe how life is for a girl only reminds me how blessed I am to have been born an American girl. I have wondered about Malala's parents. Now I see where her courage comes from. For him to not only raise a female child to fight for her beliefs in a system that silences women as a rule, but to speak out on the wrong of that system gives me hope for humanity. What a brave man. I agree. I don't think anyone has the rights to push their views and beliefs down other peoples' throats. What I am trying to say though is that as a Muslim (woman) in a society made up of entirely of Muslims I can tell you that education is very very important. I do acknowledge that some other counties aren't that blessed, but pinning it on the religion is ignorant; its the society's fault and their presception of Islam.

+Boruj Alzamanan again. Look, your religion is whatever you want it to be. Any religion is basically an ideology which deserves to be criticized and ridiculed but people shouldn't be killed for it. Till the time Muslims keep on saying that my book is perfect and others ain't, till that time large portion of their population will be violent. Your argument starts with a book and I m asking you to keep your book away. Religion is made for humans and not the other way round. Right or wrong is not for you or your book to decide and stop blaming the society, society has been very kind towards Muslims and again plz keep your religion personal. Your morality and honesty is far more valuable to the society than your books morality. Do you think leaving Islam or Christianity or hinduism should be punishable by death?

This TED talk gave me life; I live in Turkey and I can see that my country is falling apart slowly. I hope; in the road that goes through this downfall, parents can treat their children like he does to her. Maybe this can minimise the impact or can end it. And I almost cried. He is such an inspiration like her daughter. I want to meet him more than Malala. I wonder how he ended up as a citizen person in a family like his. I hope he and Malala will change somethings in their country. I truly believe that.

We women from western countries have no idea how our fellow sisters live in darkness in such patriarchal societes. This always comes as a shock! I've just read Malala's story and from the very beginning it was clear to be that she became such an icon because her father never shut her up, but always encouraged her not to be afraid to speak her mind. Incredible as it may seem, her mother is an illiterate woman. He was humble to say he simply did not clip her wings, he did much more than that, he inspired her and believed in her and now she's an inspiration to the world.

To do it still when wolves are at your door. To do it still when your baby has a bullet in her brain. To do it still when you're been shot on your school bus. I am in awe of them both. I just read Malala's book, and this only confirms the impression I got of Ziauddin. He is a wonderful and loving father. He felt no shame or sorrow in his first born child being a daughter. He poured love into her, inspired her, and let her fight for what was important to her, and he clearly has a lot of pride for her. Malala would not be the girl who stood up for her rights without him having encouraged her brilliant mind to think. He could have instilled oppression into her, silenced her, and extinguished the fire in her heart, but he allowed her an opportunity few girls from where he came from were allowed - an opportunity to use their minds. She was always brilliant, and he allowed her to apply it. I applaud him and his daughter

Thurman Ulrich All of your 'probably's' are very much incorrect. But, good for you for demonizing me because I wrote a positive comment. Shame on me. Keep up with the hard work. We all need a person to presume our beliefs based on our profile picture & stereotype us based on a 43-character comment.

Thurman Ulrich I oppose the objectification of any gender due to the dehumanizing nature. I oppose hyper masculinity. I believe in a feminism that includes WOC, women with disabilities, poor women, rich women, women in all areas of the globe. Feminism, for me, means the liberation of women, socially, politically, and economically. And I don't have to justify any aspects of these beliefs to you :)

+Eve Lister I wish everything best for women all over the world, but please, do not tell me that women in the West have it bad. They have actually more rights than men. It is those Taliban and patriarchal, immature, dark, silly assholes that we need to fight with. Not spreading chaos in the societes where women are already OK -_-

Bravo! Never let it be forgotten that the brave and forward-thinking words and actions of individuals for and toward the good can be and are effective catalysts for changing the world for the better. Speak up, speak out in support and recognition of the rights of the human, the universal human rights which are the birthright of everyone, and which is every person's right and duty to claim.
