Biodiversity is the key to life on Earth and reviving our damaged planet, says ecologist Thomas Crowther. Sharing the inside story of his headline-making research on reforestation, which led to the UN's viral Trillion Trees Campaign, Crowther introduces Restor: an expansive, informative platform built to enable anyone, anywhere to help restore the biodiversity of Earth's ecosystems.

Because of the pandemic, we now have proof of just how much our "activity" damages the enviroment. Everyone that looked outside in April and May and smelled the air, watched the waters, and witnessed wildlife on our streets cannot deny anymore just how much impact we do on our planet. In the coming years I hope we will see (more) action done in the direction of Ecology, instead of the direction of Economy.

It’s one thing to know the association between wildlife and a humans well being and actually experiencing it. I grew up in a part of FL where I was surrounded by wildlife, our family garden is wild. I really took for granted the sounds of the rain hitting the trees that surround our house and the birds chirping in the morning. When I left to study in NY... I found my self unable to sleep, feeling anxious, I had to set my Alexa up play those noises for me, but it really isn’t the same. Every time I visit home I can’t wait for the days it rained and the sound of the birds, and digging my hand in the soil to plant new fruits or other plants. I loved this video so much because I wish other people knew how important the string is to our life and everything around it... most importantly our wildlife ❤️

Today is the day to do something! I love that message cause it's important. People always tell me "why difference does it make if I don't engage?" it makes all the difference. Everything he said about the importance of restoring not only trees, but a natural ecosystem that includes trees begs the question- "Why are we destroying these rich old growth forests?" For a hamburger? For the brief taste of other animal products? "While the wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest may constitute an “international crisis,” they are hardly an accident. The vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle. The practice is on the rise, encouraged by Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s populist pro-business president, who is backed by the country’s so-called “beef caucus.” While this may be business as usual for Brazil’s beef farmers, the rest of the world is looking on in horror. So, for those wondering how they could help save the rainforest, known as “the planet’s lungs” for producing about 20% of the world’s oxygen, the answer may be simple. Eat less meat."- CNN Another reason they burn the Amazon is to grow soy. "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production. Most of the rest is used for biofuels, industry or vegetable oils. Just 7% of soy is used directly for human food products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame beans, and tempeh." -Our World in Data

My name is Ruby Lee. I’m one of the dime-a-dozen students who study at GSIS. I am good at English and bad at Maths, even though my mom tries very hard to make me better. I am 12. I love the world. Seriously, we need to leave nature to itself and protect it. When we'll decide to vote 70% of the Earth as a protected zone, and get what we need from our share (30%), our survival we'll be assured. Every human made intervention, like restauration, is disruption of the evironnement. We can favorise it, but we must do as little as possible.

He’s right. Monoculture is as terrible as deforestation. Japanese lumber companies and municipalities to back up its business planted only cedar trees and ruined biodiversity in the area. Single type of trees in mountains are causing huge problems in Japanese forests. They cause no food for wildlife which increased human bear conflicts in rural area. Season pollen causing terrible allergy among millions of people, erosion due to weaker underground roots.

There are pitfalls to trying to get all information from a centralized source. Local botanists and amateur enthusiasts know best what should grow where. No database will capture the breadth of a local reservoir of knowledge that is contained in many individuals. it's the difference between mass-produced and hand-crafted. Restoration needs to happen on local level and draw on local expertise in a truly collective way - none of this picking an appointee, working from oligarchy. Indigenous knowledge is a major missing key also.

You'd be surprised by how many people wouldn't vote for a politician that wanted to implement a tree tax. Here in Aus we introduced a carbon tax, months later the next political party won on a promise to remove the carbon tax, which they did. That same party is still in power and refuses to implement a green energy plan for the county. They keep pushing coal and now Gas power stations. Apparently we need a mix of dirty and clean energy.. People think this is common sense, mean while our house burns....

Even if 0.9 billion hectares is re-forested it would take 20 years to absorb 30% of the excess carbon in the atmosphere (about 500 billion tons), in those 20 years we will have produced another 700 billion tons or so. Even if we did this (which we’re not) we’d be fighting a losing battle.

An amazing talk, I have been preaching the same truth for decades, but as I no longer work in academia many of my words fall on silent ears. I spent years studying the relationship between fungal ecosystems and forests, especially where invasive non-native trees have taken hold. The damage to the soil from invasive species is immense, I spent 13 months in Florida looking at an invasive tree species, my research indicated the reason I had become invasive was because it’s leaves deposited a chemical in the soil which inhibited the growth of the mycorrhizal fungi of the native species. Biodiversity is the number one key to helping restore this planet, monoculture and trees for lumber are not the solution. A forest can take 40 years just to achieve carbon neutrality. Trees for lumber do not live long enough to fix carbon and so cause more damage than good. Anyway that’s my rant over, as a fellow mycologist I hear you and will look into the RESTOR project. Everyone should look to see if their is something they can do either locally or by providing accurate information. Once again, great speech.

@@unvaccinatedAndPureBlood hey bro, it’s impressive you have that kind of dedication to eat just meat; it means you are actually interested in health and longevity which we can relate on. Clearly we disagree on what to eat to increase these things so if you could send me information (articles/peer-reviewed literature/documentaries/books etc.) that substantiate claims that eating a carnivorous diet is beneficial long term for health I would be genuinely interested to read. Here’s what I’ve come across during my 3 years being and living vegan in relation to health and longevity: Veganism and less heart disease - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4073139/ Vegan 63% less hypertension - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4144107/ 22 week vegan diabetes trial - www.pcrm.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/health/diabetes/Diabetes-Care.pdf 14 week obesity weight loss vegan trial - www.pcrm.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/health/medstudents/The%20effects%20of%20a%20low-fat%20plant-based%20dietary%20intervention%20on%20body%20weight%20metabolism%20and%20insulin%20sensitivity%20.pdf 22 weeks workplace vegan trial measuring productivity and energy levels - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20389060/ If you could take a look at these studies and read them objectively you may be more convinced of the empirical appeal to veganism. With regard to the environmental impact of animal products I’ve also come across quite a lot that suggests that buying meat and other animal derived products significantly increases your carbon footprints while compared to eating plant derived food and of course this makes sense because animals need to eat plants to grow, meaning most plants grown are fed to animals (1/2 of worlds grain fed to animals www.fao.org/3/v8180t/v8180t07.htm). Large scale animal factory farms are also responsible for the environmental degradation of large areas of forestry all over the world consequently resulting in a significant decrease in bio-diversity and eradication of a variety of endangered species. Here are some references to support these claims and more: The United Nations recent report on climate action urging people to adopt a vegan diet - www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2019/08/2f.-Chapter-5_FINAL.pdf found through www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/jun/02/un-report-meat-free-diet USDA Land use - www.ers.usda.gov/publications/pub-details/?pubid=44630 Snippet from Cowspiracy detailing the amazon and it’s decline both in terms of stripping trees to create space for factory farming and bio-diversity kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4qnaJ6Nd9p9qNU FAO Beef emissions - www.fao.org/3/i3461e/i3461e03.pdf If you are going to take a look at any of these sources, please take a look at this one. The Co producer of the documentary Cowspiracy Dr. Saliesh Rao wrote a white paper on climate change. Check it www.climatehealers.org/animal-agriculture-position-paper While I believe being vegan has these effects on both health and the environment, people must know that Veganism inherently stands up for the rights of animals and stands against the acts of cruelty and injustice animals face in today’s world. The movement is about peace, love and compassion for all beings. Have a nice day bro, and I mean that💯💯💯 because while we may disagree and hold different opinions, that doesn’t mean we need to be unfriendly towards one another.

Reduce the human population by introducing strict 1 child birth control regardless of wealth, status and political position. 2. Force trade restrictions / sanctions on countries that legally politically backed de-forestation for farming, Mass slaughtering whales, Over-fishing, Poaching wildlife, etc. Look at Amazon , Africa, Faroe Islands . 3. Police the wildlife against all forms of poaching, even banning profiteering from selling licences and Trophy hunting endangered species. Death penalty for poaching. 4. Ban ALL PRODUCTS that use animal parts that derive from poaching. 5. Ban wildlife trade by locking down trade with such communities.
