Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

Scott, I can't really defend this but in my youth I always thought the three cool trainer females guarding the soft sand were Misty's older sisters. All have water type teams, start with the letter M and i swear Misty mentions having traveling sisters in the anime. Maybe I'm crazy but I meant to share this months ago.

They aren't travelling sisters. They run the Cerulean gym while Misty isn't around and put on shows in their giant aquarium pool. They even consider Misty the less talented runt until later on in the story, though they do acknowledge her a bit after she helps them out. Maybe they go travelling around the time Misty goes back at the end of Johto though. I do like this headcanon for those 3 trainers though. They may be a reference to the sisters
@Kahadi

Misty does have sisters, but they aren't travellers, they're performers, doing shows and running the gym alongside her, and are named Daisy, Violet, and Lily. However, the anime and games have different canon, so we don't even know if game Misty has siblings, let alone who they might be.

Fun fact: By examining the data in the Nintendo gigaleak, it has been discovered that Teddiursa was originally the fire starter! At some point they started toying with turning the pokemon that would become Cyndaquil into a fire pokemon and slotted it in when they decided to go ahead with that. And while they did ditch the original evolutions for the fire starter, they did convert the old first stage of the line into the little bear we know today. There's transitional data and sprites for all of this in the leak. One of the most interesting discoveries we had there, imo.

Here’s a little fun fact about the exclusivity of Ursaring and Donphan. In the Japanese and Korean versions of Gold and Silver, Ursaring is exclusive to Silver while Donphan is exclusive to Gold. This was swapped internationally so that Ursaring is only in Gold while Donphan is only in Silver. When HeartGold and SoulSilver came out, their version exclusivity was kept consistent with the Japanese version (Ursaring in SoulSilver, Donphan in HeartGold).

I definitely had a feeling seeing the 1st playthrough that Teddiursa had a lot of time to save and I'm glad I was right. Even with the extra time spent training it actually has a pretty good time for a 1st stage Pokemon. Where in Gen I we often see that a lot of 1st stage Pokemon can do fairly decently, I think we're going to see in Crystal that Red's dramatically higher levels end up being a barrier. Always a blast watching these runs. Thanks for all the great work you do!

@@iantaakalla8180 Part of me doesn’t like Ursaluna because I don’t like the concept of having regional evos for Pokémon that don’t normally have them in their normal forms since regional forms aren’t featured in future games whereas cross evos are, and I was already annoyed to find out that Basculeigon is a regional evo and not a cross evo, but apparently the PLA cross evos are treated as regional evos anyway, although I’ve heard some people say they’re being saved for DLC

Just caught the premier. Solid run, interesting to see how Teddiursa performed. Glad to see my pestering of Fire Punch finally came through along with a few others. With the frequent reliance of Hidden Power in gen 2 and many after it (until replaced with Tera Blast) it was quite refreshing to see Hidden Power not used in a run. But whatever you do, don't attempt an Unown solo run. It is I think impossible because of the fact you're stuck with 1 move. You can probably breeze through some of the gyms but get stuck once you approach the League. Because aside from being frail you are stuck with one type and the Elite Four have such a diverse set of types it would be impossible to continue. Now a TEAM of Unown would definitely be possible, hard but definitely possible. Probably at minimum you'd need only 3: Psychic, Dark, and Ground.

Thank you for the lovely time showing us how a cute smol teddy bear can steamroll johto!~ I did find it really odd how you bought calcium over carbos in the first playthrough though; feels like you maybe got lured in by the super effective coverage even though the vitamins werent going to make them better than return. The carbos would've really helped you outspeed Will's team and Lance's final dragonite too which I believe you spotted in the optimised run. Maybe knowing you were probably going to use curse later too? Carbos maybe proving itself to be the safe play even in Crystal, just for slower mons perhaps though

Teddiursa's Pokedex entries talk about how it's always licking its paws for the residual taste of honey on them, so that's probably why it gets Lick. It's even doing it in the overlay art. Lance DOES SAY "Dragonite, Hyper Beam" on the dude in the Mahogany Town hideout, so yeah. The shocking part is that he's using it on a _human._ That's like something he'd do in the Pokemon manga where the Elite Four are evil (yes that's a thing). My dumb baby brain didn't like mono-normal types either, since normal isn't super effective against anything and I didn't like setup moves or using moves on a pokemon that wouldn't get STAB from it either so I wouldn't have taught them like, Ice Punch for use against Clair and Lance or anything. I basically never used mono-type unless it was psychic because, well, psychic.

Man. If only Ursaluna is here in Gen 2. It would be an absolute powerhouse, even if Snorlax is king in Gen 2. If there were a hypothetical race between Ursaring and Luna in Gen 2, it might be very close. Ursaring's "advantage" is 5 extra Speed, but I think Luna's 10 extra Attack might be able to net KOs Ursaring could not muster. Plus, its humungous bulk might be able to survive a non Crit Cross Chop or Dynamic Punch with relative ease, unlike Ursaring.

I think the attack and defense stats should be on the same row. So speed should be on top of its column. I thought it was like this for all your videos, maybe just a gen 2 thing?)

She only spawns after you defeat falkner and that would be a lot of time to backtrack for a single item. Maybe if he was consistently short by some small amounts of hp it might be worth the time investment.

I'm confused. Why does Scott ignore Faint Attack when facing Morty? Sure, Dig is better for later in the game, but Faint Attack is effectively the same as Dig, but it's faster because it takes one turn. Am I mistaken? Did I miss something?
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Жыл бұрын
Faint Attack is special, the ghosts have higher special defense, Teddiursa has lower special attack, so Dig does more damage.

Hey Scott, have you considered holding the Amulet Coin for significant parts of the playthrough so you can buy more vitamins later? For runs like this where you need levels and have to fight a lot of easy trainers, it could help. Love your runs and your channel!
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’ve thought a lot about this! unfortunately it doesn’t really work. You obtain the amulet coin in the department store basement and immediately after that is the most convenient time to buy vitamins. Because at that point you’re around level 40, after spending your money on vitamins you are near the threshold in all stats. Then you fight Clair and there isn’t anymore room to use vitamins. The amulet coin is only useful if you want to buy vitamins, don’t need held items for the league, and then want to purchase a move tutor move before Johto. But often just using held items, skipping vitamins and buying the tutor move is faster (less inventory fiddling to waste time).

I think teddiursa might be my favourite weak normal type. With regards to pikachu not using thunder and then sometimes using thunder, I /think/ that what's happening when selecting moves in gen 3 is as follows (depending on the trainer AI, but the basic one that all the serious trainers have): first the trainer makes a pseudo roll of all of it's moves against your pokemon. This roll acts just like the regular roll, accounting for effectiveness and everyone's stats, and including variance for accuracy and damage. (there's some junk in here in gen 3 that I'm not so sure applies, but basically the AI will always go for kill moves, but then if no moves kill it has a chance of going for status, and all sorts of small exceptions like this). Then, the AI picks the move that did the most damage (including accuracy) in the simulated roll and uses that. This move then rolls again, and it's this second role that actually determines the damage that the move does and whether or not this hits. If this were the case, you'd expect that in general pikachu would use thunder about 70% of the time when it's attacking (cuz thunder will always roll more damage than the other options if it's simulation hits, I don't /think/ the pseudo roll has crits). The thing I don't understand is why it would use quick attack over thunderbolt. Ok, I'm left with the conclusion that this is clearly not how the Red AI is working. But maybe there is some sort of accuracy based component to the selection, which naturally diminishes the likelihood of using thunder, but doesn't drop it to 0.

5:35 - 6:02 Yeah I agree with that point Scott. Honestly the Darkness wouldn't bother me if they just removed it from Mt Silver, since that's the one time where I feel it's a problem because it forces the player to give up a moveslot on one of their team otherwise they have to fight Red with a team of 5. Idk why the designers thought that was a good idea. (To make matters worse they did this same thing in Emerald with Steven Stone) I know the route without the use of flash, so I never need it for Mt Silver, but its bad. This is odd in Crystal because one of the nice QOL changes Crystal added (that also makes it the only reason to play Gen 2 specifically since I don't see a reason to play GS) was they removed the use of Flash in Mt Mortar, but this is odd that they would remove it there, but not at Mt Silver. Otherwise the other Flash areas don't bother me since you only use it twice in two optional areas and they are post game any way. Even though I DO agree Flash is the worst in gen 2 of the first three gens. And while not as bad in Gen 3, it still doesn't excuse how much Victory road forces it onto you just to get through the place. In Gen 1 Flash wasn't even needed for cave navigation because you had the textures lighted for you, so you can just piece together the path forward by simply following the textures that are visible to the player. Even the use of Flash pause was better in Gen 1, when it didn't need it. It's pretty much the only thing I prefer in Gen 1 beyond a couple of superficial components.

In the Gamecube Pokemon games, the player had a tendency to effectively have 2 starter Pokemon (or literally in the case of Colosseum) - Teddiursa is the second starter Pokemon that the player has in XD: Gale of Darkness and it just rips and tears through that game!

Another tip to consider for Crystal runs: consider getting a second Abra. There’s an NPC in the Goldenrod Department store who will trade you a Machop for an Abra. Said Machop (Muscle) also happens to hold a Gold Berry, which functions the same as Sitrus Berries do in Gen 3 (healing 30 HP). I definitely think that for an upcoming Shuckle run, this may be the way to go.
@skeetermania3202
@skeetermania3202 Жыл бұрын
I should also mention that Muscle can learn Strength as well, which kinda negates the need for Krabby.

Scott, Lance sends out Dragonite. The overworld sprite doesn't matter, as there was no specific overworld sprite for Dragonite in Gold/Silver/Crystal. In fact, that's why the remakes corrected this. Because people like you kept thinking it was Charizard.

I think I only used Teddiursa once during one of my Crystal playthroughs on the 3DS (I never really bothered on the actual Gold or Crystal cartridges). Unfortunately, it was one playthrough that I never even bothered to try to finish. As a result, my more prominent memories are of using Ursaring in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. That thing was a beast when paired up with Espeon.
