One thing I would add: When possible, try to SEE all of the watches you're considering in person. Can't tell you how many times a watch has looked amazing online, but missed the mark in person. Can also go the other way too; looks terrible online, but amazing in person. This also applies to colors, as well. Not always possible with used and older watches, but to the maximum extent possible!
@Greysnowman Жыл бұрын
I agree. I find that Grand Seiko watches look much better in person, especially compared to the pictures/renders on their website.
@dutchroo8626 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. You will find that many of the opinions people share online don't translate when you have the piece on your wrist. For example, I found the 37mm Seiko 5 field watch looks great on my 8" wrist (when put on the right strap), even though the consensus online is that it would look like a child's watch on me.

Couldn't agree more with the video. Viability for your lifestyle: There are a lot of cool dress watches out there, but i would never wear them so i just appreciate them. Brand & Story: Watches not only tell time, they tell stories and what would be better than tell yours

I just bought an Emporio Armani AR60053. I 100% knew that the brand isn't Swiss made nor a company who makes strictly watches but it looks amazing, wasn't the cheapest of the range at around 500€. I have different watches for different purposes. I wear my Seiko 5 Sport when I honestly have no idea what day of the week it is as it's got day and date, my GMT when I'm chatting to an American friend (6hr time difference). My Doxa Sub 300T when I need something that can take a lot of abuse and water. My frequent daily use watch is my Seagull 1963 chrono, as it's lightweight, looks great, and it's surprisingly accurate!

Yet another Excellent well Informed Video By the GOAT of KZbin Watch Channels. all Points are very informative. but i think points 2 and 3 Are the Most Critical, ESPECIALLY Point 2 . i work as a mechanic and always need to Stamp Customer Service books so a Date is Absolutely Necessary. so their is absolutely no point in Buying a date-less Dress watch that has 30 metres water resistance and is not up to the task of the hard labour that is insured in my Job. and that stands for any other Job also . excellent video as usual

I would add that, if you have already bought several watches, where do you want to go with your collection? Do you want to wear all of them or do you „just“ want to own them. Also, keep in mind the cost of a revision. The manufacturer of one of my timepieces recommends a revision every 2 years; so it adds up. Other than that, you mentioned 5 great aspects to think about. I thought about getting a Rolex Oyster Perpetual, which I still think is a great watch. Very elegant, understated. But it was to heavy on my wrist and therefore it wasn’t meant for me. Put a watch on, see if you are comfortable wearing it. See if it fits under a sleeve. How the dimension are.

The greatest advice here was try the on first then decide what to buy, i was saving up for the prx, but when i tried it on it was large for my wrist, but when i tried the Tissot Gentleman, it was perfect for my wrist although they both have the same case size. Another great video teddy!
@jpdemer5 Жыл бұрын
My experience exactly - I'd gone in looking to buy a PRX as my first "serious" watch, and walked out with the Gentleman. Wrist is 7-1/2, but the PRX was just too chunky for my taste. Give me great looks, under 11 mm, and I'm interested. I end up with a lot of manual and quartz movements, which is fine by me... not many people have jobs that adequately wind an auto anyhow. (Bartenders and delivery people; who else? )

Me: 1) Titanium case & bracelet; 2) Simple 3 hand dial with thin case, preferably under 10mm; 3) Quartz (preferably solar & radio controlled & perpetual calendar); 4) Sporty with attractive dial; 5) Reputable brand (Japanese preferred). As a watch collector, for me it’s a few things 1) how much I am spending on a watch-should not exceed a thousand dollars. 2) does the watch has serial numbers; paper is good. Basically is the watch authentic. 3) will I wear this watch? If the answer is yes, then when? And if that is too I know and it’s atleast once in two weeks and watch is rare, I get it. For ex. Getting the CW moonphase C1/C7 (almost impossible to get) oris’s James Morrison at less than a 1000 usd, they were my deals. And there are a few more rare ones which I am happy to own.

I just purchased my first real decent watch and my first consideration was what style I wanted. I was after a divers watch, that's what I liked and the style that attracted me the most, next was value, how much watch could I get for a certain price. After that it came down to material and colour and then brand and size of said watch. I ended up getting lucky and finding a Citizen Promaster for 50% off, I think it's an older model, CA0711-80H. I snagged it for $350 AUD, down from $750. It's a massive watch, slightly too big for me after some wearing but not too big that I can't pull it off. It's a statement for sure but all my priorities got ticked off before I came to this negative so for my first watch I think I did well. For my second, well now I know to go a little smaller and now I can get something a little different too, more classic styling maybe or maybe a land watch? We'll see.

Your channel is one of my favorites, Teddy! I love what you're doing and I'm always excited for the next release. Funny enough, I wholeheartedly disagree with the "viability for your lifestyle" point. Although you're absolutely right wearing a Duoface Reverso if you're a cop for example doesn't make much sense, I have an easier solution. Don't wear it while on duty. Problem solved. There will be plenty of other times to wear it. You don't have to be in a tie and suit all the time for you to enjoy it. For instance, I never use formal attire. That would never stop me from buying a Lange or a Reverso. I give less than a flying you-know-what if my watch "matches" my wardrobe or my personal style. Never have, never will. Only three things would stop me from wearing a watch I love: I couldn't afford it. I can't get it wet because I'll damage it. And I'm going through a sketchy part in town and I don't want to get mugged. That's it. Wear your Reverso with your Star Wars pajamas. Nobody cares. Enjoy what you love.
@moose99moose Жыл бұрын
Agree strongly especially with the point about whether a watch actually matches what you do and what you will wear. I bought an expensive dress watch for myself for my 50th. I seldom wear it, as I would wreck it in months. Gone back to a steel sports watch I can wear in the garden, cycling, skiing, travelling. Not a better watch, but a better match.

Regarding the first and second points: I recently had my Omega Seamaster professionally modded, in that I had the helium escape valve removed and replaced with a third party i.e. with a valve that sits almost completely flush with the case, whilst still retaining the water resistance rating. Of course this voids the warranty and limits who I can get it serviced by, but it's now an infinitely better watch for me personally.
@highnrising Жыл бұрын
I have an Omega Seamaster and I like the helium escape valve. But I can see that some people don't. Most Diver 300 M's don't become collectors' items or retain value, but in case yours is a special, rare edition, the guy should have given you the original valve--and you can have it put back on, if need be.
@m.e.p.r Жыл бұрын
@@highnrising 100%, it's fairly a polarizing feature. I like the clean aesthetic without it at the moment, but that could change. I have all of the original parts and the mod is 100% reversible, so I thought that there really wasn't a downside to trying it out.

I think one of the most difficult aspects for those just starting their watch journey is judging size and finding their preference. After watching reviews, I ordered the Seiko SNK809 as my first real watch. I loved the looks of it and in the reviews, the proportions seemed OK. When I got it, I was very disappointed because on my wrist (I am not a huge guy) it looked like a toy to me at 38mm. I then went to the opposite direction and ordered a 44mm Seiko perpetual chronograph SPC123 (which wears smaller than 44mm) and liked it more, but realized my sweet spot would be in-between. My 3rd watch was the Seiko SNZG09 at 42mm which is my favorite size now. Since then, all my watches are between 40 and 42mm. I also realized that as a beginner at the time, ordering online after watching reviews made no sense, I should have tried a few in a shop in the beginning to find out what is best for me. I kept the SNK809 just in case my taste changes someday, or my son wants to wear it - but I have never worn it.
