My wife got me an Apple watch a few years ago. I wore it for about 3 years and then never wore my other watches. I felt naked without the apple's notifications, ease of use and other really nice features. But as time went by, the novelty wore off. I realized with my phone in pocket or near by notifications were not 100% necessary and I didn't need to obsess over my "rings". While my collection is modest in cost, I was neglecting more than a dozen other watches I used to routinely rotate based on where I was going or what I was wearing. I love the different vibes each watch gives off and it was a shame to keep them in my drawer. The Apple watch provides little personality. Changing the strap on the Apple watch would never have the same feeling or impact. I do still like to wear the Apple watch when I'm at home when I don't care what happens to it. Great content as always Teddy! Cheers

For me personally, the Apple watch is a tool (a great tool). It helped me a lot in my weight loss journey with those instant calorie tracking, exercise measures and even the sleep apnea feature. Now it helps me in some of my other hobbies like cycling. It will always be a really great tool watch for me But I still love my CW Twelve, Seiko 5 GMT & Orient Bambino. Those theee are unreplaceable

If you do sports, Apple Watch is a necessity. Ive seen people who swore off smartwatches with a nice luxury watch collection but end up with an Apple Watch lol! You could go out running, the watch is your phone, it has it’s own music to play into your AirPods, the Apple Pay pays for merchants like convenient stores as well as the public transport. It’s recording your workout for strava so you can track your progress afterwards. You can leave your phone at home. It has its place. In addition to HR, it has ECG and oxygen reading. Trail maps, directions, sky’s the limit hahahahha I bounce around with mechanical and an Apple Watch. Mostly mechanical on work days. I travel only with an Apple Watch because of the utility and reduce a target for theft. There’s so many aftermarket accessories if you want you can dress it up like a Hublot. If you wear a nice luxury ring, it can elevate the Apple Watch with the correct strap and casing. Actually I noticed women can switch off luxury watches to Apple Watch easier than a man because they have so many other accessories like bags, shoes, jewelry so watches are really not there status symbol accessory.

I wear the apple watch to track my activity, watch my heart rate, check the weather, see messages, etc. But when I put a nice suit on and go to a meeting, or dress up for dinner, and want to step it up a bit I want something else. I like the idea of a mechanical because I'm a programmer and the watches were some of the first computation devices. Time keeping changed the world. So it's an homage to that.

I was also into the smart watch game for a long time, my first smart watch was a Razer Nabu X Forged, it has both the looks and ergonomics of a G-Shock but some smart features, rocked that thing for years until I got my self a Fossil Gen 5. That I would consider my first real smart watch, used that thing for all of college. The bracelet on it was also awesome and it had a sense of personality. I then moved to the Apple ecosystem and rocked an SE and then finally my GF gifted me a Apple Watch 9. I was always a watch guy in a sense of liking something strapped to my wrist, but like you, I wanted something that would show me off a bit more. I went to Japan a few weeks ago and picked up my first automatic, a Seiko 5 GMT SK003.

I wasn't a watch guy, didn't have a use for them. My stepfather pasted. I ended up with his mostly old pocket watches. Hamiltons,Waltham, Illinois and more. The engineering and craftsmanship plus the history sucked me in. I then started watching videos. A fan was born.

The watch that got me into watches was the Omega Constellation Globemaster. I accidentally saw some pictures and I was struck by the look of it, the space observatory in the back, the star on the dial, the name... It made me dream, something I didn't think watches could do. Then I watched a video about that model, also discovering KZbin channels about watches, and I said to myself: "I have to buy a Globemater". In the end I opted for an Aqua Terra, three or four years later, because I found it more versatile. But the Globemaster remains the watch that got me into watches.

The watch that got me into watches was back as a pre-teen and the Swatch Stale Fish. Even since I was a kid, I've loved watches and they've always caught my eye, especially while watching TV or movies. I like to be different, which is why I've never purchased clothing from American Eagle, why I don't drive an SUV, why I'd rather go cycling than watch American football, and why I prefer wearing a real watch than something that the sheep wear on their wrists. Hardly anyone I know ever notices my Hamilton or my G Shocks or my Seikos, but they make me feel damned great to wear and also to know that in another 20 years I'll still have them in perfect running order.

My favorite part of the watch hobby is learning and talking about them with other watch people. Its really not in the purchase. Desire is a bottomless pit and if you can sublimate that desire into a passion to learn you will be better off. I really got hooked when I bought a Seiko 5 with a see through back and studied how it actually worked. It left me in awe that hasn't abated over the years. In such a flawed world it is comforting to have an instrument of excellence and beauty strapped to your wrist. Thanks so much for your videos Teddy!

As for waiting to buy the watch you really want or getting a cheaper one as a substitute; I was researching the certina ds action 38mm, found the combat sub 39 and almost got the combat sub over the certina but wasn’t full sold on it. Damn am I glad i got the certina instead. I’m extremely happy wearing it. So far it seems to have settled at around +2-3 seconds a day. Very accurate imo. The first watch that got me into the hobby was a quartz Wenger Swiss army field watch. From there I had a few more quartz pieces (Luminox Navy Seal, Movado Museum watch for a dress watch). I always saw Automatic/Mechanical pieces as out of my price range, because I only knew of brands like Omega and Rolex at the time. Then, my wife bought me a Tissot Luxury in 2015/2016, which was an affordable automatic watch that I thought was very attractive. After that, I started researching an automatic “beater” watch to take on my Honeymoon in Australia in 2017, which would be affordable enough not to crush me if it was lost, but durable enough for the diving/snorkeling I would be doing (and something that would look good, too!). To that end, I wound up with an SKX 007 back when they were still about $200 (Thank you, TGV!) and that cemented my journey forward into watches through to current day and beyond! By the way - I do own an Apple Watch, but I only wear it while working out to track all my metrics and stuff. But it never wear it out of the gym!

Found myself also using my Apple Watch a lot more compared to my traditional watches. I determined that for me, the real value it adds comes through two activities: workouts and focusing (working, as it allows me to filter notifications a lot better). With that, I found "my" balance. If I'm either working out or need to focus, my AW is on. Otherwise, I have a traditional watch on.

Being more content with affordable watches is the way to go in my view. I started with Casio and Hamilton earlier this year and bought several watches, eventually getting an Omega and Grand Seiko. No doubt more expensive watches are impressive, but it's an expensive 'habit' that is arguably difficult to justify for most people. Be strict with your budget and honest about your needs/wants before diving in. As for Apple watches and smart watches in general, they make it more convenient for the consumer, enabling them to avoid the wide world of watches, including brand tiers and snobbery.

I’d say Apple watch actually helped in market perception in developing nations because now spending in the range of $300-500 for a watch became justified with its introduction. Not to mention the fact that people see a normal watch a better spending since it doesn’t need to be constantly charged, repaired (with high costs), or upgraded after a few years.

Been using real watches since 2013 (Seiko SKX007 being my first watch), then switched to Garmin to track my daily heart rate since 2017, then to Apple Watch to get even more (smart notifications etc). But then my over obsession with these things (daily heart rate, body battery, training readiness, smart notifications, calls directly from Apple Watch) makes my life feel complicated. January this year, I decided to ditch my Apple Watch altogether, only wearing my Garmin when I go for my running exercise, and back to wearing my SKX007 for daily activities. Heck, even my high-tech Apple loyalist friend never wear Apple Watch, he wears Omega Speedmaster every day. Some of my fellow smartwatch-wearing friends have been influenced by my decision back to wearing “traditional” watch.

I am one of the people who had a 40 dollar Wal-Mart smart watch at first. Than I got a G Shock and a couple months later a Citizen Eco Drive Promaster diver. I only wanted quartz watches because i was scared of breaking them. Than one day I bought an Orient. 2 years later I love real watches. I know some people where collecting long before the internet , but I dont often meet collecors in real time so when I get online and see so many others teaching me about their appreciation I feel part of a really cool club 😊 and all you need is a 20 dollar Casio ❤

Great video, I was interested in watches even when I was in school and of course casio was there. My grandfather was using the Atlantic worldmaster and I still have that watch. But I was always a casio guy. But I also have mechanical watches, orient is just enough for me in the elegant category. But most of the time I wear the mudmasters, perfect for outdoor activities. I don't care about smartwatches.

I’m in the market to buy my first luxury watch. Until now the nicest I’ve ever owned was a Movado. Got it narrowed down to a used Rolex air king, a new breitling navitimer, or a tag heuer carrera. These decisions are hard 🤣

I have an Apple Watch, and you hit the key problem for Apple - it's a "one and done" watch. It is also a marketing platform first, an "alerts you don't need but I insist you get" device, and, to me, is just wearing your iPhone on your wrist. Now what I've described a ton of people call the virtues of Apple Watch - you be you. I'm back to wearing my WOTD, sometimes even two or three WOTD's in the same day. I wear an Oura Ring for my all day, all the time health tool. Anyone want a lightly worn Apple Watch Ultra? 😁

Other than Hodinkee and Fratello, Teddy’s YT channel is the only watch content I follow. I seriously hope that Teddy won’t be a part of a big watch group like what Hodinkee is doing recently

I see your point and for many saving that little more for the perfect watch probably is correct. However, I specifically go for something nice that will "scratch the itch". I learned (for me) through other things like guitars and bicycles, that if I have that higher level item, I end up not using it (you have said before, "it owns me" instead) and I also end up with a bit of imposter syndrome. So, I then end up selling that item to get something that is still great, but that is more within my normal range. For watches, I now really want a Grand Seiko spring drive, but I will likely be more happy in the end with an 9F.

I have 20 tera old Sinn 144 gmt with tytan case and bracelet and it is great EDC Watch (I use in purpose capital letter 😉). I was shocked how light is Longines zulu in tytan and it was a reason who I do not buy it. I agree with you in GS statement and looking forward for new clasp in their bracelet. Omega finały get it in their new AT 👏🏻

I just got a Unimatic UC1 and absolutely love it. It does seem to split opinions though in the watch community. How dare you have a Dive watch with no timing function. Yeah like how many people buying these watches actually dive ha ha

I have a question for your next video like this. As someone who has a middle class income, and has other hobbies, I only have a few hundred a year I should realistically be spending on horology. Is it wise for someone in my position to invest in mechanical watches (knowing they'll need maintenance down the road) or should I stick to solar/quartz?

Grand Seiko are extremely cool, the engineering and price are legendary, but they look very bulky and top heavy, and a titanium bracelet probably hurts its perceived balance more. They are all dress and totally lack any tool design either, but they addressed this with the not-grand Prospex LX Spring Dives. A review of one of those would be great, I believe the last time you mentioned it was with Kevin O'Leary. Maybe they could water down Spring Drive's accuracy and bring it below $5000.

I have lived with so much technology since the early 80's because of my work, I have always enjoyed the beauty of analog and precision in other areas, my entire watch collection is all pieces of analog and I LOVE Chronos and perpetual date pieces... I love the art, I do love my tech, but I also adore the complexity and beauty of a fine watch. Sorry Apple, Ive bought hundreds of your devices but not the watch
